Life's little lessons

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

amazing what can happen isn't it?

the experiences of the night of 25th may 2005 will be remembered for all sorts of reasons, all sorts of amazing images and emotions. the rollercoaster ride of a lifetime.

the first 45 minutes of the game was a living nightmare. in the first minute maldini scores and we're all thinking "thats a bad start, we'd better get one back quick", but milan start pulling all the strings and we're chasing shadows. then we're 2-0 down, ripped apart again by some sublime play from milan and we're thinking "lets just get to half-time and regroup. then we're 3-0 down and staring into the face of a rout, humiliation, everything is surreall and in slow motion...

it was like that feeling when you suddenly realise you've made a massive mistake - really f**ked things up, you're blood runs cold, you're palms are sweating, face flushed, heart pounding and skipping beats. maybe every one was right, maybe we ARE out of our depth here, maybe we never looked at this objectively in the first place, even toyiing with the idea we might win. the thoughts were unavoidable.

but then it all happened. the magic started. and the lesson of belief was taught. rafa believed it and passed it on to the players, steve gerrard believed it and passed it on to his team mates, the amazing, amazing fans never stopped believing and drowned out the celebrating milan fans with an unstoppable anfield roar. we came out again in the second half and that passion, that belief carried us through. xabi alonso was believing when he followed up his own penalty to score the follow up, jerzy dudek believed it when he made the incredible double save and defeated their penalty takers at the end, even vladi smicer believed it and scored a great goal and a great penalty.

then stevie g lifted the cup and we could stop believing because we all KNEW it was true. we're champions of europe for the 5th time.

what a lesson for every single person watching the game in every part of the world. if you believe enough, have the passion, the will and never give up you can achieve anything. go out with your head high and a proud heart and you will get what you're striving for. our team of heroes did just that, led by the fire and the passion and will of our manager, our captain and our heroic number 23. our love for our club is unstoppable now not just because they have won, but for how they have won and what they have shown us is possible.

i'm going to be a father for the first time later this year and i can't wait to tell my child about this week and how a team of unfancied footballers achieved a miracle. i will teach my child that you never ever ever give up hope and that anyone who follows those players amazing example can make their dreams come true.

thank you liverpool fc.

You sound like Obi Wan Kenobi teaching Luke to believe in the force :D

Good point though, lesser sides without the glorious achievements of the famous Liverpool sides form the past echoing in their ears would have just given up and capitulated completely. It just goes to show that drive, pride and determination can overcome ANY obstacle.

This has been my proudest moment EVER as a Liverpool supporter

Walk on....

Great post, the unbridled joy of that night will never be forgotten, why would you want to be a fan of any other club or sport for that matter?

Football and Liverpool FC especially makes my life meaningful. :)

The psychology of it was quite amazing.
On the flip side those Milan players looked like they had already lost even before the shoot out started.
It will certainly be interesting to see how much self belief and confidence it has put into our squad for next season

I'm not making this up:
I was watchin the game with a good friend and lfc supporter and at half time i said to him 'this is how we felt at half time against olympiakos.'He knew what i meant. I believed that there was the tiniest chance of it happening I'm not saying that i knew we were gonna come back. I was thinkin it was the worst anticlimax ever. I'm not boasting: i'm often too optomistic like when we were 2-0 at southampton and birmingham i thought for sure that we'd come back
Steve Gerrard Gerrard,
He'll pass the ball 40 yards,
He's quick and he's f*cking hard,
Steve Gerrard Gerrard.

Funny you guys said that.   I was looking at the slides from Gerrards house that were posted elsewhere on the site, and he has champions league display case with his and Shev's jerseys in it.  This display case is the centerpoint of his massive trophy room with loads of other jersey's, but Shev's and his are featured with a large rendering of the blue 5cups badge.

Maybe they are mates?
