Lfc team to win league - Over last 15 years

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Big Niall » Thu May 12, 2005 4:39 pm

Just thinking that we may have had 11 excellent players over the last 15 years just never at the same time. Can you think of a team of losers (rough description for players who never won league at liverpool) who together would be good enough to win league. Judge the players on how good they were when at liverpool not when younger or older.

I think

Friedel, Rob Jones, Hypia, Henchoz, Finnan,SG,Alonso, McManamann,Risse, Litmannen,Owen (just edged Fowler).

Left midfield was a tough one.

note its not just the 11 best players, balance needed too hence why Owen and Fowler not playing together. Need somebody who can drop back and creat ala Dalglish.

No Carra? Finnan at LB? Friedel was only class at Blackburn. Id say:

                                       Dudek (1st season)

   R. Jones                 JC                             Hyypia              Staunton

Redknapp(when not injured) Alonso              Stevie G

                                               Litmannen

                          Fowler                                    Owen

This side is judging the form shown for LFC. Up the 'pool!

Staunton was the best Left back we never had.....why oh why Souness sold him, and the others, i'll never know!

Staunton has won the league with LFC so is ruled out. Hence I put Finnan on other side as he can play there.

Hypia & Henchoz had a great understanding over several years at centre back so I left out JC (having second thoughts about that though. I might change original line up)

(Er......goalkeeper.......Dudek 2002)

Rob Jones      Jamie Carragher    Mark Wright      John A. Riise

                       Xabi Alonso           Steven Gerrard

Steve McMannaman                                      Patrick Berger

                      Michael Owen          Robbie Fowler

The sad reality is that I still don't think that team is good enough to have won the league in a year where say Man UTD (1999 or 2000), Arsenal (2004) or Chelsea (2005) were really strong.

I'd flesh the rest of the squad out with: Sammi Hyppia, Stephane Henchoz, Didi Hamman, Steve Finnan, Jamie Redknapp, Jari Litmannen etc
Jolly Bob Grumbine.
