Our best bet judging by previous rounds is to go and attack early, get 1 or 2 goals, then sit back and defend.

The reds have had a tendancy to play well in the first half, then tire in the second.

for once i agree with you.

hopefully that won't change. :D

I don't understand why Rafa didn't let Patrice go and keep Paul Harrison instead, who may go to Chester City as Rushie is keen on him.

Gerrard injury paves way for Alonso
Monday April 11 2005

Steven Gerrard's shock withdrawal from Liverpool's Champions League showdown with Juventus puts Spanish international Xabi Alonso in line for a first team comeback.

The £11million midfielder, signed from Real Sociedad last summer, could be thrust into the cauldron of the Stadio Delle Alpi on Wednesday as Liverpool try to defend a 2-1 first leg lead against the Italian giants with a semi-final spot at stake and Gerrard sidelined by a groin injury.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez left Alonso out of Saturday's disappointing defeat at Manchester City to give him a full three days of extra training with a view to including the 23 year-old in the squad for the trip to Turin.

Benitez had then hoped to use Alonso as a substitute, but now with Gerrard ruled out of the trip, the Spaniard could find himself on from the start.

The loss of Gerrard is a shattering blow to Liverpool, who have seen their entire season disrupted by a succession of serious injuries to major stars.

Now for their biggest European game in 20 years, skipper Gerrard will be left at home to watch the match on TV while the rest of his colleagues jet out to Turin tomorrow morning.

A club spokesman confirmed Gerrard's absence on Monday saying: "Gerrard will not travel with the squad to Turin on Tuesday but will stay at Melwood for further treatment.

"Club doctors are hopeful Gerrard he may be able to recover in time to be involved in the game against Tottenham at Anfield on Saturday."

Gerrard picked up the injury early on in Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Manchester City, which accounts for his low key performance.

Bad news about Gerrard. Will probably be Biscan an Alonso in the centre of midfield. hope Alonso is able to last 90 mins

Thats a bit harsh  ???

I think Gerrard's mind is made up to be honest so his availibility for this particular game is immaterial as to whether he is on his way or not.

Liverpool captain Gerrard suffered the problem in the closing stages of the 1-0 defeat against Manchester City and did not travel with the squad to Turin.

Gerrard received treatment from Liverpool's medical staff on Sunday, but has failed to recover.

Liverpool may now give fit-again Xabi Alonso his first game since 1 January.

Juventus struggled to cope with Gerrard in Liverpool's 2-1 first-leg win, eventually man-marking the England star, and his absence is a bitter blow for Wednesday's clash.

Manager Rafael Benitez must now ponder a massive gamble with Alonso having played only 45 minutes of reserve team football since breaking his ankle against Chelsea on 1 January

Its bad news!

my team would be:

             Dudek

Finnan Carra Hypia  Traore

Nunez  Smicer  Alonso   Risse

             garcia
             Baros

But i think rafa will play...

            CArson

Finnan Carra Hypia  traore

Garcia  Biscuit  Alonso  Risse

           Le tallec  Baros

Never again will I question your intelligence, Smicer as the holding midfielder is a masterstroke. ???

something doesnt feel right to me about this.
i`ve just heard gerrard isnt travelling with the squad, well if i was club captain in such a big night for many reasons i`d want to go on the trip to give the lads moral support.
maybe he stayed back for treatment but i`m sure he could get it over there.
i cant help thinking that after saturdays result something was said, because rafa was openly fuming with the performance and saying `that was a must win game`i reckon he tore into the team big time, and maybe gerrard started having a go too, maybe they all did i dont know, i havent got anything to base this on but i just sense somethings not right. maybe someone mentioned the stories in the morning papers (saturdays) or something.
maybe the press have got me paranoid whenever a situation involves gerrard, i hope i`m wrong because i`d just started to convince myself he`s staying.
to not have him playing in this game is a sickener, it really is.

he didnt look impressed at all did he?
re: gerrard, i hope i`m wrong, i really do, but usually you hear for a few days that a particular player is struggling with an injury, a kind of will he or wont he make it situation.
first i heard of it was today in work - when it came on the radio, i couldnt believe it. i got that horrible sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. maybe i just have missed the reports over the weekend.
if he is injured our luck is truly ****** awful, its beyond a joke now.
