Chairman Hopes For Permanent Striker Deal

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has told the Manchester Evening News that he hopes to sign Liverpool striker El-Hadji Diouf on a permanent basis in the summer.

Senegal international Diouf is currently in fine form for the Trotters having netted four Premiership goals since the turn of the year and Gartside says he is hopeful of haggling an acceptable deal with Liverpool to bring the once £10 million forward to the Reebok Stadium for keeps.

"We are certainly going to try to keep him here next season. I think he wants to stay and we want him. It's a question of trying to get the right financial deal with Liverpool."

"It's not so much a matter of reaching agreement with Diouf as Liverpool. We know what his aspirations are. He might not get exactly what he wants but we know where we are going.

"But we need to do a deal which will suit both clubs and we will try to do that this summer. When we took him on loan we talked about the possibility of keeping him."

Gartside fears that Diouf's recent success on the field may alert other clubs to his availability but he is hopeful that the African will choose to stay loyal to Bolton.

"There's always a danger of someone else coming in. He hadn't been very successful in English football but we have tried to revive his career. Hopefully, we will benefit from the situation where he improves with us. If he hadn't been successful with us, we wouldn't be wanting to buy him. "

The Trotters supremo knows that signing the 2002 World Cup star will not come cheap and has referred to a similar situation 12 years ago when the club signed David Lee from Southampton following a successful spell on loan.

"I remember when we signed David Lee from Southampton. We couldn't afford £100,000 but we had to because he was so successful and Diouf is almost giving us that sort of problem.

Gartside is confident that the 23-year old can put all recent bad publicity behind him and says that Bolton is the only place for him to resurrect his promising career.

"He's not the easiest of players to understand and manage. People are not only going to look at his success with us but at the lad himself and see that he attracts the wrong kind of publicity. There's no way anyone is going to pay £10m.

"But we have seen him week in, week out and he's a tremendous player. He gets frustrated, he gets hammered and referees don't protect him and players give him a lot of stick.

"He reacts with frustration. He's not malicious and we've got to hope that as a 23-year-old he grows out of it."

....................................................................................

Let's just hope we can get a good deal out of this although it looks like we are going to make a substantial loss on him whatever. If we can even get half of what we paid for him we have done extremely well. :(

Diouf is worth £3m imo, I wouldn't let him go for less that £2m but I think Bolton will try and rip up off for about £1m, I find it a joke the way the talk about buying Diouf like their doing us a favour or something, I'd prefer to put him in the reserves or loan him out again rather than let Bolton take the p1ss and get him for fook all

Bolton have to cough up 5 million for diouf. He is their best player by far. If madrid can play hardball with us (and they have ronaldo, raul & owen), we should do the same to them (but seeing that parry is our ceo....... )

i am sure some turkish or qatar team will sign up diouf if bolton doesn't.

4-5 million pounds is a fair price + £ 2 million if Bolton were to qualify for CL (you never know what might happen)

Otherwise we should use diouf as leverage when we sign a player from la liga. Diouf will do well there as the game is less physical and more technical.

Problem is...with a nut-head like parry...he will prob let diouf leave on a free....

Maybe he's worth more than 5m but less than 9m . Liverpool should neg to bolton 5m upfront, play for more than 30 match 1.5m and score 20 goals another 1m .
Total : 7.5m

Once we got that money , we should buy 1 or 2 good defenders .

Bolton haven't got anywhere near that sort of money. They're going to struggle to meet his wage demands, and that'll definitely reflect in the sort of fee they'll offer. If they offer more than £3m I'd be absolutely staggered, but think that £1-£2m is more likely. And personally I don't think we should sell him for that little. I'm actually disappointed that he's probably going to leave without Benitez getting his mitts on him, as I can see him doing wonders for our team if he manages to sort himself out.

Bolton are clearly going to play on his disciplinary record and the fact that he's apparently "hard to manage" both to get the fee down and to put other teams off, which is a shame, but you can absolutely see why they're doing it as he's been their player of the season by a long way.

I can smell a deal of around £1.5million for Diouff and us subsidising a tiny amount of his wages. It would not surprise me.

I don't know how much longer he has on his contract, probably two years or so but at 40 grand a week we would save 2 mill' a year if they took him off our hands. With that in mind, a transfer fee of around 1 million and us washing our hands of him altogether would seem like a fair deal for all concerned (truth be told I'd give him away but there you go).
If we could also offload Diao, it would finally conclude the most disasterous piece of transfer mismanagement the club has ever seen. The pair of them make the signings of Biscan and Heskey look positively inspired.

Biscan: £5.5million allegedly "rising to £7million", depends on who you are listening to.

Cheyrou: £3.75million

Diao: £5.5million

Diouff: £10million

Its always hard to be 100% accurate with transfer fees and as Leeds have proved, the cost of signing players can often be substantially higher than the transfer fee published to the media as there can be loads of hidden costs. The above amounts are the generally accepted figures for the transfers of the following players.

Thats £24.75million, plus between £4million to £6million a year in wages.

Selling those players now would bring at the very best £3million-£4million in the transfer market.

£25million.

Look at it this way.

In Houllier's time, we could have got Damien Duff for £12.5million. I know there's no such as a sure thing, but I think most people would agree that disasterous injury aside, Duff would have made a serious impact at whatever club he was at.

The remaining £12.5million would have brought you Anelka, or alternatively Wayne Bridge and Joe Cole.

Ok, its very easy for me to say that with hindsight and perhaps Duff, Cole and Bridge might have flopped very badly at Liverpool. On average, every 4th or 5th signing a club makes just doesn't work out. But there lies the problem: it seems to me that more than half of the players signed by the club in the past 15 years just simply haven't worked out, often to alarming degrees.
