lfc at the moment really need a good yard dog type of player, like everton-carsely, man utd-keane  arsenal- viera  chelsea-makelele, but at the end of the season who really would be a good player for this kinda job

i dunno, all teams can benefit from a player who battles and holds it all together in the middle of the field, no special, just tackles and makes passes no longer than 20 yards.  makalele has been inspirational for chelsea this season and alan hansen picked up on his simplicity during the game. he just gets the job done.

i think the combination of gerrard and alonso next season(if stevie g stays) will erradicate the need for a battling player as they both compliment each other.

i tend to disagree with the idea of one outright ball winner or grafter, to me everyone in the side should be doing this - in fact if they`re not what are they doing in the side?

It would be good to have another Steve McMahon type player but we have Stevie to play that role, well at least for now anyway.

We in the past have always been blessed with players like Case, Souness, Whelan and McMahon. Since then no one have been able to fill in this role with Stevie coming close to fill in this role but his forward trust is more valuable to the team, besides he goes in two-footed too oten for my liking. Alonso is a good tackler but too skillful to be a McMahon type of player. More like Molby, tackle and pass.
However, a combination of Alonso and Gerrard would be perfect for modern game, a mixture of ball winner and attack potency. Let's hope Stevie see the potential and stay...

What's Jamie Carragher if he isn't a yard-dog? Okay he's not of the same ilk as Keane and Viera, but every now and again he has a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp! :D  But seriously though, I would like that sort of player and it doesn't seem to be Gerrard anymore. Someone like Zauri or Xavi would be nice, but that's probably just a pipe dream.

If Liverpool want to save some cost . Maybe RB should let Diarra and John welsh to play in that area.

Assuming SG goes in the summer, we definately need a physical, "kicker" in the middle. Is Souness still up for it (he'd still kick the sh1t out of Redknapp and Barnes).

There aren't many Roy Keane's about but even lesser players similar to Nicky Butt's level (no - not Nicky himself) should be around.

I dont think the likes of carsley or butt are the answer.  If you want to challenge in europe and the premiership then your midfielders have to be able to play a bit as well.

I still think our main problems lie in the centre back position and the lack of good wide players.  I think we're alright for now in centre mid
