Sir demento knight of football - Just a question

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby wet echo » Fri Jan 07, 2005 5:14 pm

i was listening to the debate on goal that never was on the radio and it was posed as a question why hasnt old sir demento knight of all things football raised the option of the game being replayed, the presenter rebuffed this idea due to the fact that it has never been done and  it would set a president for other games in a similar situtation therefore sir demento was between a rock and a hard place,it came to mind a few years back that Arsenal had in fact requested a replay due to poor sportsmanship from his side against a steve bruce team can some of you people help out here, not that i ever think old red nose would ever go down this line unless it was in his favour

LONDON (AP) -- Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger, in a too rarely seen gesture of sportsmanship, offered to replay his team's tainted 2-1 victory Saturday over Sheffield United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The unprecedented offer was immediately accepted by the English Football Association.

"It is an unprecedented situation," FA spokesman Steve Double said. "Everybody welcomes the sporting gesture by Arsene Wenger."

yeah i remember that vaguely, wasn`t it something to do with kanu scoring from a throw in when sheff utd had put the ball out so a injured arsenal player could get treatment.
and to go off on a bit of a tangent remember when robbie fowler told the ref it wasnt a pen against arsenal.

yeh thats right, the point i was making was that if the will in extreme situations is there (and iam not saying we would have done anything different)then it can be changed or be offered as a peace maker..thanks for the imput

it would be great, in some respects, to see such integrity and sportsmanship re-enter the game. but its not gonna happen. episodes like the fowler one are freaks, but welcome freaks. wenger probably knew the FA would never accept his offer as kanu didn't actually do anything wrong according to the rules.

and its true, the precedent set would open up a can of worms far far bigger and ugler than the odd drama over refereeing decisions

very true zarababe,i think the basis to my original post was this guy was given this title for contributions to football and sport in general and is held as one of the games great managers (i know its worthless, and given to him by phony tony)but he could of made the offer couldnt he as it wasnt a contested hand ball but his keeper had made a massive rick and they had scored, carroll then proceeded to cheat.

.. who is gonna concede.. unless it's a life and death issue.. and even then they'll think twice :D  My Avatar depicts the grreatest footballer of them all.. but he got a way with it too.. and did not own up to that hand ball goal .... even Mr nice guy.. ol big ears Linekar.. scored with his hand against the dutch and was off celebrating.. before being pulled bak by an eagle eyed ref... it's the way it goes.. it's best to look at the technological opportunities.. to take the burden away from players and managers..

i dont agree, its cheating in any other name and players should have more integrity. when someone does do something genuinley sporting even his own fans tend to back him, just like the fowler incident. thankfully the crowds in general have more integrity than the players.
i was listening to a chelsea fan on the radio and he was talking about when makalele got someone sent off, he said all around him all the chelsea fans were fuming with "if thats what we`ve got to do to win then we`d rather not win" being the general feeling.

the difference in this (my closing point ) zarababe was that it was well over the line not a contentious decision by an official the keeper had cheated a point lost on most comentators who are quick to raise the question against Viera, rooney, etc and sir demento in many ways i believe (most will disagree) was duty bound to protect the name of man utd as Venger did against Sheff utd ..cheers
