Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool's much celebrated Champions League victory over Olympiacos on Wednesday was more about football than finance, insists club Chief Executive Rick Parry.
The importance of Liverpool making the last 16 of Europe's premier cup competition was well documented in the build up to the game against the Greeks but Parry is keen to explain that the Reds are in the Champions League to win it, not for the money.

"I think Wednesday night should be seen as a magnificent football occasion for the club," he says. "That's what Liverpool is all about. Being in the Champions League isn't just about earning money.

"The win over Olympiacos was celebrated for footballing reasons rather than financial reasons. We want to qualify and progress in the competition because we want to win it."

While the extra revenue generated by a lenghty run in the Champions League would be most welcome, success in the group stage does not guarantee the financial jackpot everyone assumes.

"There wasn't a lot of money won on Wednesday, but that doesn't lessen the joy of winning the game. Some of the figures mentioned are well wide of the mark," adds Parry.

It has been reported that qualification will earn the club an extra £10 million when in fact each club in the last 16 earns just £1 million. A further £1 million is then earned for advancing to the next stage and the figures increase the nearer you get to the final
