bigmick wrote:JBG, if he's achieved one thing in my book, its to elevate himself above the the fitful ping-pong. Really though, lets be serious for a second. Is he a beter player than Marcus Bent? Than Kevin Phillips even today? Than Shola ameobi? Than Johnathon Johannsson? than Andy Cole even today? than Yakubu? than Emile Heskey or Darren Huckerby? than Kanu or Stern John or Johnathon Macken? Is he really better than any of the above? Or equal to?
Also, the most important question of all, is he anywhere near as good as Robert Earnshaw?  :D

But Mick, what other choice do we have? Yes, I'd even take Earnshaw ahead of Mellor, but at the moment, we don't even have a guy as "good"  :D  :D as Earnshaw.

Who else can fill the void? Sinema?

I think you are missing my point: of course Mellor isn't as good as those players you mention (although thats not to say he cannot be as "good" some day) and once Garcia and Baros come back, let alone the new guy in January, Mellor will be back on the bench.

However, I do think he can do a job for us, better than, as some suggested, playing Igor Biscan up front!

If Kewell got his ****** in gear then obviously there would have to be a re-think, but to play the way we did yesterday for our next 4 or 5 matches, we need a Mellor type player, not a raw and light weight Sinema nor a misfiring Kewell.

Mellor deserves the credit for the heart and effort he put in, particulalry after the complete lack of spirit we showed against Boro last week.

He's got to be the best 4 string striker in the league apart from Chelsea's 500 strikers :)

Onto this, "its too early" chestnut again. It may be too early for you Fivecups but not me mate. I've seen enough to form an opinion and voice it to anyone who listens. If you want more time, fine then take it. if you think he's good enough, fine also come out and say it. This is a forum of opinions though and I've got one. Mellor isn't good enough. I repeat, if I'm wrong I'll eat my keyboard.

Mellor doesn't have to have pace, dribbling ability,etc.. as long as he can score for us at this point of time. If he can do what he did yesterday then I have no problem with Mellor being up front until Baros and Garcia return.

JBG, clearly he is now the best option available so he deserves his place in the team. Also he deserves all the credit in the world for his goal on Sunday, and his effort which was excellent. His performance though taking away the goal was as you would expect. Not quite good enough. Just imagine if Rafa said, "Nah, we're not going to sign anybody in January. Neil can do the job for us." I'd like to see these boards then.

Well I don't think anyone wants to imagine that :p . Benitez has stated before that he will definitely sign a new striker come January.

Now thats  a differnt story no-one is sugesting that we should not stregthen the attack in Jan because of Mellor but conversely if were bieng hypothetical what if Mellor bangs in another 5 before Jan  ???

But I'm not saying that. I agree with you, I'd be extremely nervous and pessimistic if we had to persist with Mellor all season. What I am saying is that his goal and work rate against Arsenal (plus his two against Boro in the Cup) surely puts himself at the top of the queue ahead of Pongolle, Kewell and anybody else that could be thrown up front, and if he prospers I'd be delighted for him, but I don't really expect Mellor to do a whole lot. Its more the system we played yesterday, in which Mellor was an integral part, and the way it allowed our midfielders to dominate, is what COULD get us through until our big guns return.

I repeat, if he bangs in five goals before January, he still isn't good enough. He won't anyway. If he scores ten league goals from open play before the end of the season then I'm getting the salt, pepper, ketchup and hacksaw out. I'll send out the pictures.
C'mon guys, move on. He aint good enough. You can all see it, just admit it!

I think Mick, with respect, you must be reading a similar thread on a different Liverpool forum as I don't think anyone here really suggested that Mellor is any kind of medium term (let alone long term) answer and all we are saying is, he has proved that he is the best option we have left (the best of a bad lot unfortunately) to get us through December. Mellor isn't a whole lot, but he's all we got, and as much as I like Sinema, I simply don't think he is cut out at all to lead the line.

lets see what happens in the next 3 or 4 games. i'd like to see if rafa sticks with the same 11 (though with pongolle or nunez i'm not sure) and let them gel and encourage each other. after that we'll see who is and who isn't good enough.

'til then mick - go hungry, mate.
