Naby Keita

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Must admit I hadn’t realised just how many games he had participated in. Either my memory is truly fecked or his performances were so mind blowingly forgettable that I didn’t notice him on the pitch. Can’t be bothered going through the games he played in but I would guess that in a lot of them he came on as a substitute. I was desperate for the lad to be a success. He cost £52m which is one hell of a lot of money given the quality of his performances. I appreciate that he has been unfortunate with injuries and that certainly hasn’t helped.

During a 4 year period (2014/18) in the Bundesliga with Salzburg and Leipzig he played in 101 games and scored 31 goals. The goals return for a midfield player is impressive however he could have played in a possible 136 games if it wasn’t for injury. He is clearly suited to German football. The Premiership in my opinion is a much tougher gig.

Snippet from a recent Q&A with James Pearce of The Athletic.

Is Keita staying for another year? What’s the point though? He only has a year left after this season. His market value is only going to plummet unless he shows a phenomenal performance throughout the year. Are Liverpool really banking on that? (Anfield K)

Yes, unless there’s a dramatic change of heart, Keita is staying put. He has looked very sharp in pre-season. The big question is whether he can stay fit and belatedly show us all on a consistent basis what we know he’s capable of. I can see the club’s logic. He cost £52.75 million. If Liverpool had tried to sell him this summer in the current COVID-affected market they would have been lucky to get £15 million for him. That would have been a hefty loss and Klopp genuinely still believes in him. Keita himself hasn’t shown any interest in wanting to move. He’s happy at Liverpool. He wants to prove himself.

Yes, his current deal only runs until 2023, but if he shines this season he will still be worth a lot more next summer than he was this summer. He might even earn himself a new contract. This season really is make-or-break for him at Anfield.

Apparently some clubs are working together to get their Guinean plays out of the country on a private jet. From being forced to play with an injury, to being piggy packed off the pitch because there was no stretcher, to military coups. Understand for a lot of players it's a privilege to play for your country but at some point you have to ask yourself if it's worth it.

Liverpool's Naby Keita 'safe and well' in Guinea following military coup in country

Liverpool are "satisfied that Naby Keita is safe and well" as they work to get him out of Guinea following an attempted coup in the country.

The 26-year-old was representing his country in a World Cup qualifier against Morocco on Monday.

The match was postponed following hours of heavy gunfire near the presidential palace, with an attempted coup taking place in the capital Conakry.

A Liverpool spokesman said the club was in "constant contact" with Keita.

"We have had regular communication via his national team management," said the club spokesman in a statement to the PA news agency.

"We are satisfied that he is safe and well cared for. Obviously the situation is fluid and we will maintain regular dialogue with the relevant authorities as we work to get Naby back to Liverpool in a timely and secure manner."

The Morocco squad were escorted to the airport and have left the Guinea following embassy-level negotiations.

Head coach Vahid Halilhodzic told French media agency L'Equipe that he could hear gunfire "nearly all day" as squad members and staff waited for safe passage out of the country.

Once the flight had landed in Rabat, Morocco and Paris St-Germain fullback Achraf Hakimi tweeted: "Thank you all for the messages and the support, it has been a very intense day but thank God we are safe and sound in Morocco."

Moroccan players posted videos of the squad and staff smiling and singing a rendition of their national anthem as their flight departed Guinea.

Wolves defender Roman Saiss captains the Moroccan side, with QPR striker Ilias Chair and Watford duo Adam Masina and Imran Louza also in the squad.

It seems they are talking with Keita about a new contract as the current one runs out in 2023??? I think we should be looking to offload not extend the contract which I suppose will be more lucrative.

Naby is perhaps the most naturally gifted midfield player I've seen in a reds shirt since Xabi, the lad just makes the game look easy the way he glides along with the ball whilst outmaneuvering opposition players and always finding the space and room to pick the pass. A lots been said about his injury problems ,but I cant help feeling we're blessed to have a player of his quality in our squad. I would personally be devastated if we were to lose a player with his kind of ability ,I just think when he's on his game he's a joy to watch and the closest player to Thiago in terms of natural talent.

That may seem like a bold statement ,but sometimes in that wonderful old yard of ours you get to see players just that little bit more special than what you're used to. Naby Keita is one of those players.

He is certainly talented mate, not many CM's can drop a shoulder and go past a man like he can and his work rate (particularly his ability to press) is criminally under rated. He can spot a pass too as well. Problem is though the fella is made of glass, he must have been here about 3 years now and I don't think he's strung 5 consecutive games together without pulling or twisting something. He makes the likes of Danny Sturridge and Joel Matip look like a pair of Ian Callaghan's!

I think his latest injury was more a freak accident rather than his conditioning. I mean ,he kicked the turf and we've all done that ,I just think what Klopp has done in terms of affording him his own personal trainer and dietary expert in an effort to deter this spate of injuries shouldn't be lost on his dissenters ,as its obvious the manager sees him in the long term as an integral component of our future midfield. I would say this mate ,Naby is 26 but still young enough to put these ijuries behind him. Thiago was around the same age before his game really came to prominence with Bayern ,before that his career was littered with niggling injuries. I'd be loath to lose either even though Thiago is now hitting his early thirties ,but I just know if we sell Naby it will be one of those decisions that see another team suddenly hit another level as he's that good ,if I'm looking for an eg ,then its somewhat similar to Chelsea letting De Bruyne leave.

He's now in his 4th season and has only managed 57 games for us, most of those would have been cameos as well.

I do agree about the lads quality at times and he does make some stuff look majestic but that injury record needs to change. He had a great preseason by all reports but now that the season has started it's looking like more of the same.  I don't know if it's the pressure of playing for us or living in the UK or even the weather but sometimes it just doesn't work out for players at certain clubs. It hasn't been working out for Naby this far imo.  He has this season to turn it around I reckon but it would make no sense to give him a new deal if its anything like his last 3.

Oh it's an absolute cert that if we sell him to Leicester or someone he'll go on to never miss a game for them and give a masterclass each week, there's nothing more certain.
As Red points out in his post above this one though mate he has only played 57 games in 4 years here which must be some sort of record, we probably play what? 50-60 games a season? On average Naby currently plays in about 14 of them.
Let's just hope this specialised training/fitness regime Jurgen has him on starts paying dividends soon because we do need him, against City I thought we lacked quality in the middle of the park and quality is something he has in abundance.

When fit !  :D

There's no doubting there's a quality player in there somewhere.

BUT !

I've honestly come to the conclusion that the Premiership is not the league where this fella will ever really shine.

Needs to be shipped off to a less competitive league where the opposition isn't so fierce. He'd probably do well playing in a top six club in France or Germany , maybe even Spain.

Whatever we may think of him, and we can make all the excuses we want BUT if we're honest with ourselves and the truth be told, he just hasn't lived up to our expectations , for me, despite the odd flashes of quality, he's been a massive disappointment.

Won't miss him if he goes. Let's face it, he's been missing for most of the time that he's been at our club.   :(

Would have preferred to spend the money we pay Naby on keeping Wijlnadum   :kungfu:

His return on investment has been awful, regardless of his potential he has to be sold on. Consider how small a role he played last season when our need was so great due to the terrible injury rate we had.

Had a great game today. Shame he was pole axed by Pogba.

Yep it was the type of challenge that often results in a break in the bone. Hopefully that's not the case here.

Naby is the most annoying player in the squad.. he's either brilliant, or he's non existent. When we won the league he played 75% of the league games and contributed a lot on a low key basis. He goes missing in the big games usually but he really showed up today .. hope the injury isn't serious.
