Coutinho's farewell message on Instagram...

phil.coutinhoSince the moment I arrived in Liverpool , me and my family have been made to feel so welcome and have made so many friends.

On the pitch and off the pitch, we have experienced the beauty of this club and its fans. In turn, I hope I have delivered memories and moments that have brought happiness to the Liverpool supporters.

Moving to Liverpool, I knew the club’s greatness and history but what I did learn during my time was the unique heart and soul of the place. It has its own personality and character.

I leave Liverpool because Barcelona is a dream for me. Liverpool was a dream that I was fortunate enough to realise and I have given five years of my life to it. A career on the pitch only lasts for so long and to play for Barcelona as well as Liverpool is something I want to experience and enjoy while I am blessed enough to be able to do so.

I hope the supporters understand that choosing to experience something new is not about diminishing their importance to me or the club’s importance. Nothing will ever diminish that in my heart.

I wish Jürgen and the team nothing but joy and success for the rest of this season and beyond. This is an amazing team and they are getting better and better all the time.

There are too many people I want to thank, but I cannot name everyone individually.

To all the amazing club staff who have been part of my life in Liverpool - I will miss you. To the owners, whom have tried so hard to bring success, and to the football recruitment staff for showing faith in me to bring me here and rewarding me during that journey, and to my incredible teammates, past and present, who have helped me grow and improve as a player and a person, I would like to say thank you to you all. Anything I have achieved here would not have been possible without you.

And finally, to the most important people of Liverpool - the Liverpool supporters. I can never thank you enough for what you have given me during this time and no matter where I go in the world, for the rest of my life, I will always cherish Liverpool in my heart. You, the club and the city will always be a part of me.

You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Philippe.

Best of luck Couts. I for one don't blame you for wanting to move to Barcelona. The timing wasn't good but who knows what the club has promise you.
I believe we got good money for him. People need to realize that we bought him for 8.5 million pounds and nobody expected him to become the player he has. The fact that he has become this magician is great credit to him. I would be cursing if let's say we sold him for 75 million pounds.

BTW locking Coutinho's thread is abit lame. Should've moved it to another section...

We all would have just accepted him leaving in the summer but it is just the timing that does not go down well. I'm sure another 5/6 months wouldn't have hurt him.

Anyhow what is done is done so next is who are we going to sign. If by end of this window we have not added anyone i worry how will we do for the rest of the season. At the moment i am patient until the window closes.

I am completely lost with your post Reg  :D. First of all Salah and Keita are completely different players. Keita is a CM, capable playing box-to-box. Salah is a wide attacking player. Just because they are short and dark-skinned doesn't mean that they are the same type of player  :D . Secondly, David Villa is not a play maker, he is an out and out striker who in today's football doesn't exist anymore. And then you describe a big 6'4" German which is totally different from David Villa type player who is like under 6 foot tall spaniard.

???  :help

The way I read it is he didn't say David Villa was a 6ft4 German, he wants a player with all those attributes.  :D anyway I reckoned he meant Silva who I know is not 6/4 but is a play maker. Reg is right that we are more in need of strengthening the midfield than a Coutinho direct replacement, Hendo, Can and Milner don't cut it.

Yes I do agree that it will make more sense to bring in Naby Keita earlier than try to buy a coutinho replacement. Lemar can come in the summer...

You're going round in circles Mags, make your mind up!   :buttrock

What I was trying to express is the need for  dominant playmaker to come in hence the 6'4" comment, a physically strong player able to create opportunities, not a speedie-pants darting round. The front line is fine, it's the thinking, creative role where we need to focus attention now. If we bring in the right player you'd be surprised how quickly the players and fans will forget Coutinho.

A playmaker that is 6'4" are you kidding me? Admit it Reg, you've had abit too much to drink and lost it  . The only one that comes close to that description is Paul Pogba and I wouldn't call him a playmaker.

Even accounting for VVD its reported we have the lowest net spend in the league, in profit infact over last 2 years.

It’s important players and supporters believe we are more than moneyball and there is a desire to win big titles, replace quickly with high quality, keep belief in the project.

Lemar, Goretzka, Oblak, Allison are all those type of players and we should be aiming high, offering the package to get at least 2 of these boys in right now.

I know the metro isn't very realible but its reporting that we are trying to hijack Aubameyang's move to China. That would be the superstar signing we are praying for.

Aubs would be good but i wouldn't want us to pay too much if anything did happen. He will be 29 this year so ain't got many years left in him.

I was just wondering Man City have been able to keep their players really well. They must be paying them rediculous amounts to keep their players happy. You would have thought players like Aguero or De Bryne would have been approached by the 2 spanish w*nkers.

City as a club have an aura about them which suggests they'll do whatever it takes and spend whatever it takes to achieve success, those types of clubs attract players and once there players don't want to leave.

red till i die!! » Tue Jan 09, 2018 12:47 pm wrote:Winning titles becomes an awful lot easier when you buy better players. 2 years in football now is absolutely nothing and we could have a total different looking side by the time the 19/20 season kicks off. Salah, Mane and even Keita when he arrives won't want to be here unless they are winning something. Unless we start bringing in better players capable of bringing us to the next level we will continue to lose our own and turn circles every 3 years like we have been doing.
Building from the back has merit but that is not what we are doing  :no If we were the likes of Mingolet, Lovren and Moreno would be long gone. Adding a defender every 3 or so years is just plugging the leaks. If we were looking to build from the back then you do what Guardiola did and replace the lot of em in the space of 2 windows. We are more likely to offer new contracts than p-45's. Yeah city have endless pockets but also a ruthless attitude when it comes to non performers and we don't.
Our attitude to winning stuff just isn't there. You play for Guardiola or Mourinho and you know what is expected from you where as far too many of our players believe there is far more important things out there than doing what your paid to do.
What this club needs is a winning mentality at the very top level and then it will filter down through the team but until that changes we will continue to go through the motions like we have been doing.

Agreed with all that. Reading this forum I figure that even the fans are used to the fact that we're a second tier club now and that we should get used to selling our best players to the "bigger" clubs. Experience from the past years shows us that it doesn't matter how much we get paid for our best player, we always end up being worst off without them. So I can't really understand how can some people be happy about all the moneyz the club made from this deal. We're never going to win anything with this attitude and mentality.

This attitude and mentality has been instilled to a large extent by the PR machine that is FSG.

I am not one for asking for owners/ managers to be axed at the first sign of malaise but ...

SEVEN years and one trophy...two years in the CL ...selling our best players every time we look to be making progress.

We are all living with the consequences of selling to Tweedle dum and Tweedle dee instead of DIC (seems like forever ago)- I am certain we would have won a few PL if we had got the correct buyers at the time- they also have the win at all costs mentality.

Good post electrum, we had to wait for it though didn't we, 22 posts in 5 years... You just got out?

In modern terminology the T&T fiasco was a major 'disruption' financially and to our reputation and football performance. Rafa was broken by it, Woy, Kenny and Rodgers lived through the aftermath and in reality with ManUre, Chelsea then Citech being so strong on and off the field, the players who came to us were second rate.

Now, with Klopp, 2-3 years in, with the Fab 4, Keita on his way, VVD to run the back four, we've finally come out of the dark into the sunlight.

Coutinho was extremely unfortunate but he was old generation. The balance of the team is new generation, Klopp men. Replace Coutinho wisely and there's no reason to doubt the improvement will continue and dream to win the league again will come true.

Countinho's departure was just darn bad timing.

It is looking more and more like someone has implied, that Coutinho's deal was done in the summer, and that the plan has always been to buy Keita and VVD with Coutinho's money. Maybe in the summer some of the incoming deals were not confirmed so therefore Coutinho was kept for half a season. It seems like the addition of Salah, Ox, VVD and Keita and the sale of Coutinho is it for this year. There will be no more spending of Coutinho's money because it is already spent. If this is the case, how do you guys feel about it objectively? For myself, the team may have gotten overall better, but it sends a very negative message to potential targets. That FSG is more about balancing the books than anything else.
