I understand people are sad to see him go but some of the reactions are priceless. We should have sold him last summer, we didnt, players should be allowed to leave clubs if they dont want to stay, that transfer fee was more than his market value, Keita is his replacement but wont join till the summer, etc. etc.

Heres a positive, we've needed a change in formation for a while now and this is as good an opportunity as any to do that. Yes, it could have happened under better circumstances but that is how it is. Instead of spending all this time thinking about his replacement, we should be looking at how we can improve our chances of winning a title. Someone said that a top4 finish wouldnt have been guaranteed even if he had stayed. I agree.

Coutinho's situation isnt similar to that of Suarez, Torres, or even Alonso. They all left gaping holes in their respective positions when they left. The side still has top4 quality in terms of attacking midfield options, all of Mane, Salah, Firmino and Lallana are decent at that. Ox is a decent backup and Keita is coming in soon.

Sides that want to challenge for a title build from the back. Even Guardiola understands that. The majority of his transfers have been in defensive positions and thats were he spent the bulk of ~400mill over 2 season on.

I'd be more than happy with 3 solid defensive additions rather than 1 expensive Coutinho 'replacement'.

Aubemeyang is 29 in June, if clubs could get him for a reasonable price they'd probably be interested but they are not going to fork out £50m - £60m on someone with 1 maybe 2 seasons left in him at his best.

Yup going for a striker who is in his mid 20s is different but late 20s and splashing 50+ mill isn't really worth it.

Not even the petro dollar clubs are interested at that price mate, that's why it looks like he's off to China.

You make valid points and this does give us an opportunity to make a more balanced team however that does excuse the timing of this transfer, the only way this could be deemed acceptable was if we had Keita or Lemar guaranteed to join this month which isn’t going to happen, selling your best player in January is the actions of a small time club, it’s as simple as that

Oh, the old "let's sell our best player and improve the overall team" trick that we've tried about 7 times over the past decade. Let's hope it works this time mate because it hasn't worked before.

We don't need this Aubameyang fellow as he's the same style as Salah and Keita isnt he? Also because I can't pronounce his name.

We need a play maker to build on our more solid back 4, a David Villa style of person. I quietly live in hope there's some big 6'4" Girman that Klopp knows and he's not telling anyone about. Now would be a great time to start using his knowledge of zee German league and bring a couple of strong, centre field dominating lads. That's what we need now, not another 100m sprinter with arms and legs all over the place.

Say we go out and buy the best like for like replacement out there. A David Silva or Ozil or lemar. Would that get us any closer to winning the title ? Would the side be better equipped for a title challenge than say spending the 100 mill on a GK (Oblak) and a holding midfielder (Goretzka or Milinkovic-Savic).

We have to be realistic about our finances and clear about our objectives as a club. If we have any title ambitions, improving the spine of the side has to be the priority. Hopefully the Van Dijk and Keita signings contribute to that.

I am completely lost with your post Reg  :D. First of all Salah and Keita are completely different players. Keita is a CM, capable playing box-to-box. Salah is a wide attacking player. Just because they are short and dark-skinned doesn't mean that they are the same type of player  :D . Secondly, David Villa is not a play maker, he is an out and out striker who in today's football doesn't exist anymore. And then you describe a big 6'4" German which is totally different from David Villa type player who is like under 6 foot tall spaniard.

???  :help

Some stupid comments in here like. The days of the 6ft 4 striker is over as soon as your arms are up now it's 99%  a foul against you. You can't use your arms for leverage game has changed!! As for keita and Salah ffs they are no where near same sort of player.
I would love this Becker GK he's class with VVD and keita what a spine to the team add in Goretska and maybe Lamar we would be awesome

The way I read it is he didn't say David Villa was a 6ft4 German, he wants a player with all those attributes.  :D anyway I reckoned he meant Silva who I know is not 6/4 but is a play maker. Reg is right that we are more in need of strengthening the midfield than a Coutinho direct replacement, Hendo, Can and Milner don't cut it.

Winning titles becomes an awful lot easier when you buy better players. 2 years in football now is absolutely nothing and we could have a total different looking side by the time the 19/20 season kicks off. Salah, Mane and even Keita when he arrives won't want to be here unless they are winning something. Unless we start bringing in better players capable of bringing us to the next level we will continue to lose our own and turn circles every 3 years like we have been doing.
Building from the back has merit but that is not what we are doing  :no If we were the likes of Mingolet, Lovren and Moreno would be long gone. Adding a defender every 3 or so years is just plugging the leaks. If we were looking to build from the back then you do what Guardiola did and replace the lot of em in the space of 2 windows. We are more likely to offer new contracts than p-45's. Yeah city have endless pockets but also a ruthless attitude when it comes to non performers and we don't.
Our attitude to winning stuff just isn't there. You play for Guardiola or Mourinho and you know what is expected from you where as far too many of our players believe there is far more important things out there than doing what your paid to do.
What this club needs is a winning mentality at the very top level and then it will filter down through the team but until that changes we will continue to go through the motions like we have been doing.

Yes I do agree that it will make more sense to bring in Naby Keita earlier than try to buy a coutinho replacement. Lemar can come in the summer...
