Kewell, pongolle or mellor - Who would you rather

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Matt D » Thu Nov 11, 2004 10:16 am

If you ask me Kewell has had his chance in the team, although everyone likes him one way or the other he just isnt good enough - simple as, he looks like he has lost the desire and ability to run at people, whether this is caused by injury or not, no one knows but Harry himself. 2 fairly young lads have come on the seen in Mellor and Pomgolle, allbeit they have been at the club for some time, and both give different options to the squad, Pongolle has good agility, is fast, can run with the ball and wins penalties, and mellor will be full of confidence looks quite strong and can use both feet - plus the fact he is 22 so he is not that young and probably needs to make things happen now.

As a strike force who would you rather see up front, partnering Milan at the moment that is, before the transfer window opens, and without using Garcia because he plays best behind the forwards.? ???

I would give Mellor a chance along side Milan, because Milan likes to pick the ball up and run with the ball, were I think Mellor will hang round the box ready to goal pouch, I would like to see how they play together.

With Kewell I thing what Bentiez said on the Liverpool website summed him up, got loads of potential but has not performed, Benitez has also give him a personal training programme which will hopefully bring out Kewell abilities.

With Pongolle he reminds me a bit of Heskey, but hopefully Benitez can bring the best out of him.

Pongolle hasn't done much, Kewell has done nothing in 18 months, and even though I think mellor is sh1t3 he scored 2 last night so I'd play him on Saturday. ???

Many people claim, probably justifiably, that Baros plays best off a large target man such as Koller for his country.

Mellor is no Koller, but he's a big guy, and maybe he and Baros should be tried for a few games, at least to see how it works.

Correction, Mellor isn't big, he's over weight, he is in the same situation as Baros was when he joined the club, I'd say he needs to lose about 7-14 lbs, also he looks f**ed about 15 mins  :oh:

I wouldn't say Mellor is sh1t, but I think the more games he gets under his belt the better he will become. I think Baros and Mellor would be a good partnership till January comes and we hopefully sign a quality striker.

have to agree with starting with mellor & baros. Baros will keep defenders busy & mellor (being the goal poacher he is), will score.

But rafa seems to think highly of pongolle and will probabily start with him & baros against crystal palace. Not sure why though. He is short & has woeful 1st touch (a short heskey  :p)

Can we call back our loan players at anytime because Letallec might be worth a shout, and looking at some of the players under Benitez they have improved greatly

Mellor may have scored two goals but he's still a lump .
I'd go 4-5-1 ,with the the wide men pushing up and an attacking central midfielder   :)

Give Mellor a go - he looks like he's got a good eye for goal !!
Pongolle goes gown quicker and harder than Big Emile used to(much as I loved him).
Kewell is lacking confidence or something - so lets give Rafa time with the special programme for him - see if he can be rehabilitated
Mellor scored last night - so might carry on from their !!

and speaking of LUMPS

Would you have discarded MOLBY, GASGOIGNE OR ROONEY to name but a few???
Me thinks not!!

Mellor for me. He must be given a chance, and if not now, when? No use wasting time at Anfield if you cant make it as a fourth string striker. Let him partner Baros and see if he seizes the opportunity. If he doesnt, Pongy.

Harry Kewell? Oh Harry. Being an Australian myself, I grimace at Harry's (non) performace over the past 12 months. If he is carrying an injury, rest him. Not doing anyone favours playing half fit. Also, travelling half the earth to play the Solomon Islands, Western Samoa, or Tonga is sheer lunacy. But it is all a result of the barrage of bad press he continues to get from the Australian media which continue to question his loyalty to his nation. On the other hand, The Australian public could care less whether he turns up to these insignificant national friendlies to pulverise aforementioned nations 20-nil against players who find it a novelty to actually wear football boots. Why? As long as he continues to front for the crucial qualifiers, as he always has, the Australian public remain satisfied. I hope for his sake that he doesnt succumb to media pressure. Prefer to watch him smash in a special one against manure than walking in 20 against Fiji. Good luck Harry, I hope you get it all sorted, and quickly. Step up to the plate lad, this is Liverpool.  :glare:
