Brendan Rodgers has been urged by Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson to snap up Southampton starlet Calum Chambers.

The youngster shone for the Saints last season after consolidated his place in the line-up under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, and had even been tipped as a wildcard selection for England's 23-man World Cup squad.

With Glen Johnson approaching 30 and Jon Flanagan having made the switch to left-back, Liverpool have been chasing, without much success, the signature of Sevilla's Alberto Moreno.

However Lawrenson believes Rodgers should abandon his pursuit of the expensive Spaniard and instead focused on bringing Chambers to Anfield, where he would link up with Rickie Lambert and even possibly Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren if they too decide to make the switch from St Mary's.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "If I were Liverpool I would still want to hold on to [Johnson]. At the moment there are very few players available in that position that are actually better than him.

"The best thing to do would be to get a youngster like Calum Chambers from Southampton. Give Johnson another year and allow someone like Chambers to really compete and push him for a place in the starting XI."

Liverpool are set to make a bid for Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand after the unlikelihood of landing Alberto Moreno, Express reports.

The Reds have been pursuing Sevilla defender Moreno for some time, but are now ready to give up the chase after Tottenham and Real Madrid have emerged as competition.Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will therefore turn to Bertrand, who he coached in Chelsea's youth ranks while at Stamford Bridge.

Bertrand was on loan at Aston Vila last term and performed admirably, making him the Reds' number one defensive target.

The Anfield club have also been linked with Ajax's Daley Blind and Wolfsburg's Ricardo Rodriguez, with Liverpool desperate to sign a left-back this summer.

It was thought that Ashley Cole's departure from Chelsea would open the door for Bertrand to gain a starting berth, but the Blues are closing in on Atletico Madrid's Filipe Luis, limiting his first-team chances.

And Rodgers will look to take advantage of his lack of regular playing time in order to lure the Englishman to Merseyside.

I think England's last game is tomorrow and I expect they'll be returning home the day after. Wouldn't be surprised if Lallana is announced as a Liverpool player within the next week or so.
Rodgers will want to start seeing a bit of progress on the transfer front, our first pre season game is on the 19th at Preston and that's only 3 weeks away, Infact last season the players who weren't on international duty returned for pre season training on the 2nd of July, that's only a week away.
This time next week the likes of Coutinho, Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Enrique, Ibe and Emre Can will be jogging around Melwood.

If we end up signing the likes of Bertrand and Lallana (for marquee type money) when the likes of Sanchez and Markovic are out there I think I'll start crying. This pre season has got 2001/2 and 2009/10 written all over it, we are about to make the same mistakes again.
I know they are only press reports and no one has signed yet but if they do turn out to be our targets then questions need to be asked about the competence of our transfer committee, especially after last summer.

Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao has put the Premier League on red alert as he looks to quit Monaco this summer.

Striker Falcao, who has missed this summer's World Cup through injury, wants to leave the moneybags French side after just one curtailed season.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea are likely to be sounded out about the 28-year-old, who scored nine times in 16 appearances following a £52million move from Atletico Madrid before suffering a season-ending knee injury in January.

Falcao, who began his career with River Plate in Argentina before spending two years with Portuguese side Porto, is understood to be keen on a return to the Spanish capital with Atletico's arch-rivals and European champions Real.

Today's echo is very interesting, it says that we want to keep Suarez and the rumours circulating in the press that the club has already resigned themselves to losing him are completely unsubstantiated.
It does say that there is a buyout clause and if someone meets that clause and Luis intimates that he wants to leave then the club would be powerless to stop him.
The buyout clause is believed to be nearer to £80m than the £65m reported in the press though.
It also reports that Liverpool have not yet received any bids from Real Madrid or Barcelona and when Liverpool contacted Barcelona to register their interest in signing Alexis Sanchez Luis Suarez's name didn't pop up in any of the conversations.

It's great news that we are interested in Sanchez and hopefully the high buy out clause puts Real and Barca off. What we need now is for Luis to miss a load of sitters against Italy
Imagine if Luis stays and we sign Sanchez as well!!
Make it happen FSG!

For once I think we are singing from the same hymn sheet :D

Although its early days the only names that have me excited are Sanchez and Pedro and the only two I'd go for at a reasonable price, which they aren't being quoted at, are lallana and lovren. The rest are no mark average players. Bertrand for ***** sake? Got a mate who's a villa fan and said he wasn't bad but wouldn't want him permanently, which kind of says everything you need to know.

I just hope that its all smoke and mirrors and we get a decent right back, centre half keeper and a Marquee signing like Sanchez or Pedro.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have received encouragement in their pursuit of Pedro as the winger wants talks with Barcelona's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta before deciding whether to remain at the Catalan club.

All three Premier League giants, as well as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, are monitoring the forward's situation closely after he admitted earlier this month that he is unsure over his future at the Nou Camp.

New Barca boss Luis Enrique, as talkSPORT told you on June 12, wants the Spain international to stay but now Spanish newspaper Sport claim the 26-year-old will seek clarification over his future as he weighs up offers from across Europe.

With Lionel Messi and Neymar virtually guaranteed starting places in two of Barcelona's three attacking positions, Pedro is wary of limited first-team involvement next term.

Alexis Sanchez, another Liverpool target, is still on the books at Barcelona.

As such, Pedro, who featured in 54 of Barca's 59 matches last season, wants assurances, and he could pursue a move to the Premier League if he is allocated a lesser role for the forthcoming season.

Alberto Moreno has been told he can join Liverpool IF they meet Sevilla's asking price.

Brendan Rodgers is keen to land a left-back this summer and the Merseyside club have held tentative discussions about a deal for the Spanish starlet.

Sevilla president Jose Castro will not stand in the 21-year-old's way if he wants to go, but he insists the La Liga club are under no pressure to sell and will not budge on their valuation.

The Spanish club are believed to be demanding £25million for Moreno, who has also been linked with Liverpool's Premier League rivals Tottenham.

"It's true that there is interest from a number of clubs, above all Liverpool, in him, but we haven't had proper conversations about selling him," Castro said.

"Signing any player from this club has a price and we will decide that price. If Alberto Moreno has to stay at the club he will stay but if a club pays the amount we think is big enough for him to leave, he will leave. But there is no pressure.

"We haven't reached an agreement, but talks haven't broken down. We'll wait and see what happens. If Liverpool are interested in the player and pay the right amount, he will be sold," added Castro, in an interview with Spanish newspaper ABC.

West Ham are preparing to beat Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham to Ukrainian star Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Konoplanka in January, although a deal fell through at the last minute.
United and Tottenham have both since expressed an interest in the player, but so far no move has been forthcoming.

The 24-year-old has a £12m buy-out clause in his contract but there are some concerns about whether the player wants a move to England.

Indeed, Konoplyanka has previously stated his desire to stay at Dnipro and play in the Champions League next term. The Hammers have embarked on an ambitious overhaul of their squad this summer with Mauro Zarate and Cheikhou Kouyate having already arrived.

But a move for a hot property like Konoplyanka would show real ambition from the east London club.

It now remains to be seen whether the Hammers are willing to stump up the £12m to trigger the clause in his contract and - more importantly - whether Konoplyanka is willing to move despite a lack of European football next term.

Juventus are ready to throw Fernando Llorente into their bid for Alexis Sanchez in order to tilt the scales in their favour.

The Barcelona forward is wanted by Liverpool and the Catalan giants are considering whether to cash in on the former Udinese man this summer.

Juventus are fearful of being muscled out of the race to sign the Chile international and are aiming to convince Barcelona to favour their bid by throwing Llorente into the mix, according to Italian daily Tuttosport.

The Blaugrana are looking for a number 9 to offer another option in attack and may be tempted by the former Athletic Bilbao man.

Manchester United,  Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have been handed a transfer boost after learning contract talks between Porto and their star striker Jackson Martinez have stalled.

Sources in Portugal claim that although talks have begun to keep the striker at the Estadio do Dragao, Martinez remains tentative to sign.

The 27-year-old is holding out for increased wages that compensate for Porto's desire to include an astronomical buy-out clause in his contract.A buy-out clause of £70m is a possibility and would significantly harm Martinez's chances of leaving the team in the next five-years.

His current £35m release clause is seen as reasonable, and given his outstanding goalscoring record of 46 goals in 60 league games, it is understandable why.

The forward has endured a mixed season with the Portuguese club, an impressive goal tally has been soured by their inability to secure an automatic Champions League spot.

And despite netting 20 goals and Porto boss Luis Castro may decide that cashing in on his most prized asset would constitute better business.
