Liverpool Football Club - The Rumour Mill

Tottenham have hijacked Liverpool's move for Sevilla left back Alberto Moreno by tabling a £14million offer plus Roberto Soldado on loan for the defender.

Moreno is one of the hottest properties in Spain at the moment and has attracted interest among England's elite including Chelsea and Liverpool.

The Anfield club were thought to be leading the race to sign the exciting 21-year-old.

But new Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to make Moreno his first summer signing and has given the green light to the lucrative offer.

Pochettino has made the capture of a new left back a top summer priority and will now go toe-to-toe with Brendan Rodgers to get his man.

Liverpool have offered £20million for the defender, but Sevilla value Moreno at £25million.

However the Reds are still favourites to land Moreno due to their participation in next season's Champions League.

It remains unclear what Sevilla's response to Spurs' offer has been, but the Spanish club will hope for a bidding war between Liverpool and Tottenham in the coming days.

Interestingly, Tottenham's decision to include Soldado as part of the deal raises serious question marks over the striker's future at White Hart Lane.

The forward arrived from Valencia last summer with the reputation of being a prolific goalscorer, but failed to live up to his billing as he struggled for goals in his first season.

And it now looks like he has been deemed surplus to requirements by Pochettino

That is such a poor article, desperate infact. Smacks of Sevilla trying to put pressure on us to meet there asking price. Even if they were interested, like he would turn down the chance of CL footy to play in the Europa.

It's good news in the sense that midfield is deffo an area where we need to strengthen but I was hoping we'd sign someone with a higher profile.
It's going to take some doing for a 20 year old who has never played in the prem before to walk into our team and make a spot in the starting XI his own.
For all Brendan's words about strengthening the first team we do seem to be going down the deeper squad route again.

I am ok with the signing of players to make the squad better and deeper....if they do that.
Last seasons signing of Aspas, Alberto and Moses and Cissokho on loan didnt, they were clearly not good enough.

The first team has shown they are good enough but ran out of steam, if Can is good enough to come in and play right away and not let anyone down that for me is an improvement on last season and will take some of the pressure off the usual first 11.

Having said that I have never seen Can play so he could as easily be another Alberto and not get a kick all season for all I would know.

I know it's all part of the game and money talks but i think it's about time someone pickup the phone to Spurs and tear them a new one. It's becoming ridicules how they pursue each and every player we are interested in.
We need to make it clear to them that if they continue this path they will have a problem with Liverpool FC.

Do you think it is strategic just to unsettle us and ramp the prices up or something else? Seems to happen far too often for it to be coincidental

Check the article in the thread called moneyball, it explains that both teams share the same recruitment policy ( ie "Moneyball" ) which explains why we are always after the same players. Spurs get to offer life in London as a opposed to life in Liverpool. This year we get to offer CL football  :buttrock

Reds ready to move on from Lallana
The Reds are prepared to move on from top target Adam Lallana and sign Lazar Markovic instead.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers is worried that Southampton are pricing attacking midfielder Lallana out of a move to Merseyside.

Liverpool only want to pay just over £20million for Lallana, but  the Saints  are looking for more than that because  they have to give his former club Bournemouth a slice of the profit .

Rodgers is fretting about the possibility of Markovic, his main alternative to Lallana, being sold by Benfica while he is waiting.

Markovic, 20,  was Liverpool's original target for their left-wing slot at the end of the season , but the Lisbon club priced him at £30m then.

However, heavy hints are coming from the Portuguese giants that £25m could now be enough to secure a deal.

That Markovic looked very impressive against Spurs, he's got tremendous acceleration

Southampton want too much, I'd abandon our efforts to sign Lallana and go for Rakitic from Seville instead.

I think that's what the message is meant to send. I think we're still in for Lallana myself, but we need it wrapped up before the WC and ideally before the end of the week.

Markovic would be a big risk even for 20 million. Although he has the potential, I wouldn't go for him. What happened with Konoplyanka, I hear he's available for less than 15 million now.
