MIDFIELD - a concern or not?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Why is it that when you call a player decent instead of world class... we're "underating him"???

Bearing in mind we're talking about a central midfielder who can't go past a man, isn't particularly quick, doesn't defend in the oppositions half, doesn't score or really create goals.

As I've said many times, its this acceptance and happy clappy attitude that makes fans "believe" these players are better than they are.

It was like that a while ago with someone who used to rave over Kuyt, thought he was amazing... but could then never understand why Liverpool didn't win the league.

Gerrard did drop deep, because the defence also dropped deep. Sometimes its down to the midfield, on Sunday though the amount of times Gerrard tried to drag them out and the manager and defenders were telling him to stay in was ridiculous.

As for Mascherano... tremendous? Nar. Decent yeah, but a centre mid who can't score a goal or even pass a ball is a bit like a clown that can't juggle. Pointless.

You're perfectly correct Stu.

Lucas isn't a bad player. He's improved lots. But when people claim that he does a lot of unnoticed work, which is essentially a claim to a better knowledge of the game is using selective evidence. He does break up a lot of plays. That's not in question. But he lacks other qualities needed in his position.

We can point to 20 times he breaks up play, but we can also point to 20 times he's not where he should be, leaving him way off the pace. He invariably chases back, which would be good if he wasn't out of position. He often is out of position though and ends up fouling, or being unable to make an interception. In my books, a defensive mid's main task is to protect the back four, and there are many ways of doing that. Lucas lacks several.

The clear answer is yes it is a concern

In fact more than a concern it's a problem that could harm us

Our midfield has been woeful recently with unfortunatly our skipper being very culpable for the poor performances by our midfield

He currently is playing the worst I have seen in his career today and it's harming us. We need him to find a spark to bring life back into his game and our midfield

If Toure had a better touch, I think he'd be worth a shot in midfield. I thought he looked dangerous with his runs and physical presence. But he seems to have no idea what to do once he's rampaged forwards. He reminds me a bit of Forrest Gump. Give him the ball and tell him to run! Just need the fans to tell him what to do once he arrives :D

The lads got a good strike.

Ant trust me though lad, playing players out of position is never the way forward. Never has been, never will be.

id push gerrard up and play toure as dm, he can read the game, win a ball in the air and adds that bit of physicality combined with pace that we really need. all he has to do is win it, burst 30yds with it and lay it off.
have to say though, the lad has been great for us so far and seems to have a really great attitude and an abundance of energy about him. even at 32 we got a good player.

Yeah, good signing. I hoped he would be. He's got that look about him. Ya know, honest guy who could kick fook out of ya if he wanted.

Somethings got to be done with this midfield, enough of the tinkering around in defense, pick a CB partnership and fecking stick with it - no worrying about keeping them all happy because it's to the detriment of the team. Tinker midfield, make the call and alter it, with the options we have Rodgers should try this while Johnson and Coutinho are out:

-------------------------------- Mig

             Kelly         Toure          Sahko        Enrique

                            Henderson    Lucas

                                    Gerrard

                    Moses        Sturridge      Suarez

Rodgers needs to bring some mobility into the center of midfield and Henderson is worth a shot there IMO.

What about....

                         Suarez             Sturridge
                                   Coutinho
Lucas             Henderson     (shuddering at the thought)
         Enrique                                             Johnson
                       Agger                       Toure
                                    Gerrard
                                    Mignolet

??

Sweepers are generally midfield players anyway and it would give him license and time on the ball while also allowing him to step into midfield allowing us good numbers. It allows Suarez to play his natural role alone with the wacky brazilian and would allow Johnson a bit more freedom up the pitch. Gerrard wouldn't be required to press players as much and wouldn't have to track runners either.

Enrique maybe a problem at left back, but if we work on passing the ball rather than crossing from deep then I think we'd get away from his poor crossing. On paper, the more I look at it the more I can see it working. The only concern is the major major weakness in central midfield. We'd need to sign two good players there. Worth a shot in my book :)

Makes you wonder why we didn't push the boat out and get Eriksen in the summer. Lad was a snip at £11m. Other players such as Strootman moved for decent prices aswell to Roma (who aren't in the CL either).

we could well afford to get him financially and had more than enough time also to tie it up. he was a bargain at 11 mil.
it worries me about rodgers that he doesnt view players like those special enough to join the group.
