MIDFIELD - a concern or not?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

. Mate, you're talking about putting a square peg in a round hole. Sorry but Agger is not, never has been and never will be a centre mid.
Care to explain why? And again please compare to our existing DM and not to a future candidate or signing.
His use of the ball isn't that of a midfielder. He's not able to receive a ball with his back to goal and take a touch under pressure. He's extremely one footed. He doesn't have the mobility to play in central midfield and be effective.

To be quite honest, a DM or whatever thats meant to mean is just a cop out of a position. You're either a centre mid or you aren't.

And Daniel Agger, most certainly isn't.

it's exactly the same as the few times we played aurelio as a central midfielder. it was a disaster. jovetic ran rings round him for fiorentina.

Aurelio was more suited though... and a damn good footballer aswell.

Just a shame he was a tampon.  :D

One player in the squad who I've thought in the past might make a decent DM would be Flanno.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

Nowhere near upto it mate. Maybe at a lower league club, really nice kid as well but not good enough on the ball and not skillful enough.

Yeah.  I'm not talking like starting week in week out or anything.  Just as an option to sit in front of the back four late in games or in cup ties against lesser opposition.

Would prefer to use Coady in that role

I think Coady is on loan this season.  But yeah, for the future, I'd imagine that would be a choice.

I think Lucas needs a player beside him who can win the ball back quickly and then distribute it intelligently
Lucas breaks up and disrupts more of the opponents play than posters give him credit for ,and in terms of
a defensive mid he's one of the best .....You only have to look at the money Spudz paid for Paulinho who
in my opinion is cumbersome and bereft of any precision. Teams like Arsenal would thrive with a player of
Lucas's calibre in their midfield.

Lucas's importance to the team is often understated ,doing the dirty work in midfield is a thankless task ,but
its no surprise to see him being undervalued by some .....As some things never change .

Not undervalued... just rated properly. The lads not a bad player, but he's not a good one. Compare him to Alonso... Same position, same amount of ground covered. You watch Alonso play, every time the oposition clear a ball, he picks it up and recycles position. Lucas, while he's definately a worker, lacks class and skil and I have never seen him do what all great centre mids do. At the end of the day, this acceptance of players like Lucas has lead us to our current predicament. IE No league titles, no champions league football etc etc.

We used to have a midfield that was as good as anything out there, at least not far off. Now we're praising Lucas like he's some sort of diamond.

Doesn't wash with me mate sorry.

And some forget that not long ago we had Alonso and Mash playing the same position....We could do a lot better ,in fact we must.

Why would I possibly compare Lucas to the Alonso ,the two are worlds apart ,Alonso was probably one of the best midfielder's
to ever grace Anfield and that's including Molby .Lucas does a job in much the same respect as Didi used to do ,the lad is
revered by the Kop ,and never puts nothing lesss than 100% into the task in hand . If you put Lucas with Gerrard the lad has
to do twice the graft because in some games Gerrard's energy is spent after the first half ....So much so that he frequently
ends up in front of our back four. ....Like I said thankless task.
