Given the context my minimum requirement this season is simple: Progress.

I won't be "expecting" anything that realistically demands we punch above our weight.

But I'll be the happiest supporter on earth if we do - and feel quietly confident we could pull this off but I won't "expect" it.

What would you consider progress? Would you set targets?

Winning more games as opposed to drawing or losing them.

Would I set targets? Yes: Progress.

A top four challenge is the target. We should have a good go at it considering we have no European distractions and the teams above us are all going through transitions with new managers. Three games is still too early to judge what will happen though. The signs have been positive so far in that you can see the manager has made us much harder to break down in games. The fixture list has been relatively kind so after the next six games we can really start to judge. The form in 2013 has been excellent though. In 2013 we have earned 45 points in 21 games which is more than United.

I'll say 5th would be the minimum but if we finish 6th I won't say sack Rodgers. He has not got the sort of financial backing to match the competition so even with a new manager, miracles won't happen without more investment.

Put pressure on the owners not Rodgers if we fail to reach our targets this season.  We have a half fit Sturridge scoring our goals & an unpredictable Suarez in waiting, If we have to put Aspas up front to score our goals I will blame John Henry & Co.

For now though all is good, lets keep getting them 1-0's

i said the same thing when kenny was on the verge of getting the bullet 18 months ago - you cant judge managers on a season to season basis.
the success curve doesnt run smooth, it`s goes up and down like the mountains.
look at the man of the moment shanks, he had a ropey start when he couldnt get us out of the second division, then he had great success, then we had 3 or 4 wilderness years where we suffered a lot of embaressing defeats (like losing to united 4-1 at home and getting knocked out of the F.A cup by watford) and then he had great success again.
finally he left a side that would go on to dominate english and european football.
shankly`s curve would be up and down like a jack in the box.
it`s easy to look back now on shankly`s wilderness years and say it was obvious he was rebuilding but every signing wasnt a keegan, hughes or clemence.
there were plenty of peplow`s, mcglaughlin`s and ross`s (though to be fair to ross he was an excellent man marker who didnt give beckenbauer a kick) too, it wasnt a sure thing that we`d return to the top again, and that route back to the top didnt plot a smooth progressive curve.
i know it`s not the done thing in this era of stats, analysis and fact based evidence but you`ve just got to go with gut instinct, you`ve just got to say to yourself if this manager is our manager for 4 or 5 years will he, after some up`s and downs, produce a good team?
my gut instinct is that rodgers is (or will be in the not to far off future) a f##king good manager and if we stick with him we`ll have some sort of success, it may not be this year, or the next, but somewhere down the line he`ll get it right.

Some sort of real progress has to be made this year, in my eyes that means a good challenge for the top four and a decent run in one of the cups and i dont think thats asking much from a Liverpool team. If we finish 7th miles of the top again thats not good enough and proves that Rodgers hasnt learn from his previous mistakes.

For me, other than a decent run in the cups, it's basically to be in the mix for fourth at the business end of the season. While the manager hasn't received the kind of backing that I think he deserved and that we needed to ensure we could make the step up and capitalise on the changes that have taken place at the teams above, we did manage to keep our best player, we have got a pretty damn good attacking line up when they're all fit, a stronger defence, and a team hungry for success. We should be ambitious. You shouldn't be content with a target of finishing 5th or 6th if you can realistically, albeit at a push, get 4th and I think, with a bit of luck, and a signing or two in January, we can.

Earlier i said that other teams had made progress. I didn't neccersarily mean Those above us, but those like Swansea, Everton and the like might be hoping to be around the top half. If any of us with aspirations for top four should make a bad start, it would be akin to falling into a pool of pirhanas. Thankfully our first three games have given us breathing space. Sometimes that can put more pressure on. BR will focus a lot on keeping the pressure off whilst hopefully watching it mount on the likes of United. Our squad isn't as deep, nor as strong as many/all of us would like, and so Rodgers needs to be smart in the media and in the dressing room.

A lot if mistakes have been made in recent times. Mistakes have a bad rep, but they're only bad if ya don't learn. Brendan is young and a very quick learner. He's also exceptionally shrewd, and seems excellent at micro-management. Maybe FSG liked him for that purpose. It saves money.

Ideally a CL spot, minimum Europa League spot.
Oh, and a cup or two, please.   :)

Good posts yakka.

Well for me, the minimum acceptable result will always be finishing in the top 4. But I don't know what you mean by "acceptable". Does it mean that heads should role if we don't achieve the acceptable position? If yes then who should take the blame? Is it Brendan or someone else?

For me, even if we don't reach the acceptable (in my opinion) target, Rodgers should still stay as long as he shows progress from last season. IMO Rodgers is a good coach and manager that is capable of taking us forward. But he's no magician and you pretty much have to be one if you want to achieve top 4 spot considering our squad and our rival's squads. It's possible, but it will be pretty damn hard (though I'm an optimist).

But someone's got to take the blame if we don't achieve this acceptable result, right? The prime suspects for me are the owners, but I haven't decided yet if they're guilty or not. We'll just have to wait and see how we do this season and what will our feelings be like when it's nearly finished.

Brendan from what I can see in the first 3 matches has changed his tactics compare to this time last year where he emphasized a lot on possession and attacking football and though they were entertaining to watch, they could not guarantee we would win games. So far, he has been very practical, his tactics basically are, score a goal and defend your lead till the final whistle but at the same time try to catch your opponents off guard by poaching another goal and get the 3 points. This is very similar to Houllier and Rafa's later years tactics. He emphasise a lot on beefing up the defence now. That's why he signed Mignolet, Illori, Sakho, Toure and Cissokho and together with Skrtel and Agger available for selection. Those guys are awesome defenders and I reckon he intends to have an iron wall defence to preserve any lead that we have. I wish him all the best with it but it is a risky and brave tactic because the Notts County game has shown that even a 2-0 lead is not safe, so defending a 1-0 lead till the 90th minute is tantamount to playing Russian Roulette.

Liverpool are still a Work in Progress with a young manager who is still in the learning curve. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think we can finish in top 4 this season esp. if Suarez leaves in January. Chelsea, City, manure, Arsenal and probably Spurs are miles ahead of us in terms of squad depth and quality. There is still a lot of catching up to do. My prediction for this season would be 6th place finish, 5th if we're lucky. Chelsea probably considers Liverpool not a rival and I agree with them if that's the case, that's why they dared to loan us V.Moses.

We can't really have expectations as such as Rodgers hasn't really been given the tools to do the job.
Top 6 would and close to the top 4 would be fantastic.
Top 4 would be a utopia  :D

Considering we don't have European football this season, 4th isn't too much to ask.  I would accept 5th, but will be disappointed not making it into the top 4.

challenging for top 4; if we fail to achieve then I'm disappointed unless we pick up a trophy or two...trips to Wembley are always welcome
