So are you suggesting that if we had lost the last 13 games of last season it would have no bearing on the mindset of potential incoming players. I simply cannot accept that. To convince any possible doubters we need to demonstrate over a meaningful run of games, perhaps more than most teams, that we are going in the right direction. Success in most things is about confidence and momentum.

If we had lost the last 13 games then we would have been relegated and BR would have been sacked with multiple players leaving the club. Does anyone really believe we have a squad capable of getting into the CL ? If all the squad had stayed the same over the summer then we just needed a couple of signing to give us a chance. But the first 11 of City , Spurs and Chelsea have improved and it's a case of keeping up with the Jones - in fact we need to bridge the gap first.

What the last 13 games showed us that without pressure the team can play well - showed us that we have two quality players in Sturridge and Coutinho but even in those games there were still areas we need to improve - defensively , another wide man and somebody more physical and dynamic in the middle.

Currently the GK has had a great start in terms of Sh*t stopping - the back four not been tested a lot , the two guys in the middle are going to get run into the ground , Coutinho needs help creating and Sturridge is going to be a star ( just needs to keep fingers crossed that he stays fit ).

BR has alluded to us needing players , Carra has stated we need players.

Adding a couple of quality signings right now could really boost our season and turn the good start into a great start.

So you agree that those last 13 games had a bearing. We're not playing in the Championship !!

Totally agree that we need to strengthen the first team. The important thing is that we can now see some real potential with a couple of quality additions.

Your going around in circles. We all agree on the factwe could do with a couple of new additions , which BR said we'd have so let's see what happens. But, at the moment we're 2nd, enjoy it. Hope manu, spurs, man city can all drop points today and tomorrow.

Potential yes - definitely potential there and now the manager wants to turn that potential into reality. What we need is those quality additions or we just waste it all. 2 in fact 3 top signings could turn the club from a 6th place club into a CL club but time is really ticking right now - we can't afford to wait until Jan.

Would be a quality signing for the first 11 , better than both Toure and Skrtel. Think would form a good partnership with Agger

Could be better than Agger as well.

We love Agger because he's a lad that is really settled and a proper club man and we give him a break.

If he was one of the best defenders in Europe would he really be here with us at this point and are the Man City
and Barcelona links genuine?

Not convinced personally, good player Agger but Champs League class, debatable.

Seriously, p!ss off. Anytime Benny posts anything there are a few of you guys that will turn it into something. He says something negative and he's a downer WUM who has no life and comes here to get a rise out of everybody. He says something positive and now you say he thinks he's an expert on every league.

Give it a f*cking rest! So many people come on here and say Benny is ruining the forum, and yet feel the need to post about it. There are more posts complaining about Benny's posts, than posts Benny actually makes. Take a look in the mirror! If you don't like what he has to say then ignore it

Totally agree. Whether it's negative or positive, it's HIS opinions and he is entitled do them. If others disagree, that's fair enough but really don't understand why people vilify him for his opinions

You don't really need to be the Einstein of football to know some of the players we've been linked with. Certainly not for Shako, he plays in PSG, a team that plays in the Champions League. Considering that particular fact, I can't see why would Shako want to come here. PSG offer CL football and bigger wages.

I know you don't like Toure and labelled him a "Joe Cole Mk II" which is patently wrong. But Toure has made Agger look decidedly average thus far in this campaign - Agger needs to up his game because old Joe Cole MKII is laying down the gauntlet right now.

tick tock tick tock

Brendan Rodgers didn’t don his tracksuit and neither did he repeatedly vow to simply “focus on training and coaching my team” at Melwood this week.

It was hardly a show of dissent regarding the club’s transfer policy akin to Rafa Benitez’s memorable press conference six years ago, but the Liverpool manager’s frustration was clear nevertheless.

Not for the first time this summer the Reds had failed to land a top transfer target. Rodgers believed Anzhi Makhachkala winger Willian would have been the perfect top class addition to Liverpool’s attacking armoury.

Having the Brazilian winger on board to play on the left would have freed up Philippe Coutinho to weave his magic in a central role behind Daniel Sturridge.

However, the owners’ refusal to increase their initial bid to £30million dashed those hopes.

Of course Willian may not have chosen Anfield anyway but Liverpool couldn’t blame their absence from the Champions League, the player’s wage demands or agents fees for the deal collapsing because it never got that far.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) had put a value on Willian and were not prepared to go above that figure. Tottenham and then ultimately Chelsea were willing to go higher.

The fact that Jose Mourinho hijacked Willian’s proposed move to White Hart Lane will have been of some consolation to Rodgers. At least Liverpool’s loss wasn’t Tottenham’s gain.

But the business Spurs have already done this summer, which represents a sizeable show of ambition, simply underlines the scale of the challenge facing Rodgers as he looks to plot a push for the top four.

“I have high expectations,” said principal owner John W Henry earlier this month. “The club can’t go on and on without the Champions League. It needs to be playing in the Champions League.”

Yet those expectations currently don’t tally with the reality of the business Liverpool have done in the transfer market this summer.

Nine days before the window shuts Rodgers has returned a profit in his dealings and his squad is smaller than it was last season.

During a period when he has balanced the books, Manchester City, Chelsea and Spurs have spent eye-watering sums of cash.

“I understand the climate where the club is at, but we need to push in order to get the best players we possibly can into the club if we’re to going to have any chance of progressing,” Rodgers told the ECHO this week. “There are still a number of days left in the window and we will do everything we possibly can to get the players in.”

FSG’s desire to seek value is understandable. After all they were stung back in 2011 by the fees paid out for the likes of Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam.

They want to avoid making the same kind of mistakes but a greater degree of flexibility is required.  Rodgers is their man and they need to trust his judgement.

There is still time to provide the manager with what he needs to ensure Liverpool are genuine contenders for the top four this season but the clock is ticking.
