I would have thought the answer to that was obvious

I know it's obvious.

So what do the owners do then ?

LFC have rejected an approach from Napoli for defender Martin Skrtel.

from the BBC:

Some transfer news to bring to you at the break - Liverpool have rejected an approach from Napoli for their defender Martin Skrtel. The Anfield club were contacted on Tuesday about the possibility of allowing the Slovakia defender to move to Italy in a deal worth around £10m.

Napoli manager Rafael Benitez signed Skrtel in 2008 and with the defender having fallen behind Kolo Toure in Liverpool's starting line-up he has now enquired about the possibility of a reunion.

Liverpool have refused to comment on the approach but it is understood the club are wary of selling Skrtel with fellow defender Sebastian Coates on the sidelines with a serious knee injury

Got a feeling that our business will be finished with now to be honest but the speculation is fun.

Missed all our key targets and cant see us going any further down the list just for the sake of it
so will no doubt close the wallet and have a look again in January.

Hope I am wrong like because we need better players but sense that may be us done with.

I wouldn't think Skrtel would be best pleased about that as he won't play under BR. Also suggests that BR isn't looking for another CB.

Find this site a little more reliable.....

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/liverpool-fc/transfers/verein_31_2010_default_default_alle_a_default.html

Sorry but why is that site any more reliable?

I've never heard of it, do you think it's more reliable because it supports your opinion?

Ever heard of objectivity?

It doesn't matter which one is more reliable. Whether our owners have spent 65m or 85m doesn't change the fact that Spurs have spent a lot less than us in the same amount of time, without considering the money they'll get from Bale. That was the point, I presume? At the end of the transfer window Spurs might even have profit, despite their massive spending.

Arsenal have . Better than not being in the CL. And it's 16 straight years , add in a few titles as well but then they stopped spending and now in danger.

Skrtel wasn't even on the bench against Stoke. He is as good as gone I think, we might just want more money for him. The question is, who will replace him?

Do people think we would benefit from having a director of football? I'm not talking about a glorified scout like Commoli but someone with genuine standing in the game. I think you can do without one, if say your manager is a well known, successful manager say like a Rafa, Mourinho, Fergie, Wenger etc but BR is still a guy who is building his reputation and I just wonder if he has the necessary links and networking in the transfer market that others have at the moment?

Certainly food for thought. Looking at Txiki Begiristain at Man City and Franco Baldini at Spurs. Both clubs have been very efficient in what they have done in this window and seemed to have got their targets with minimal fuss. Being experienced guys in that kind of role, they probably have a rapport with agents and clubs across the globe which definitely makes life easier when looking to close deals. Obviously it's imperative both the manager and the director of football are singing off the same hymn sheet and get on. With BR and Ayre, I don't think they quite have the standing in the game yet, which may make things a bit more difficult for us in the market.

100% agree with you. An established DoF to help attract players and sort out the transfer is a must.

Good question Doeboy. Amidst all the talk about money, it is easy to forget how important personal relationships are in the decisions that people make everyday. It is one of the reasons that Ayre does so well on the commercial side, and perhaps a reason why he apparently doesn't do so well on the player contract side.

wouldnt be so sure about that, he will probably hand in a transfer request if that napoli bid is serious. he wont be a starter and he sure as hell aint going to sit on our bench for a year.

Yep - Skrtel will want to either play more often or leave and expect an improved bid soon and Skrtel leaving
