Toure must be good business on the a money ball ready reckoner.

He's an old school stop gap buy until some of our younger kids or recruits with
potential are ready for Premiership football.

Past his best but they will be hoping to use him wisely and drag out anything left
in him to our advantage.

Looks hefty to me like so would have him burning that off pre season which would
no doubt help his game considerably if he's leaner, and at his age its a must.

Heard 2 years as well, and that he'll be on 60-70k. Considering he's coming from City and that he's a free transfer, 60-70k seem reasonable. I would have preferred a one year contract plus an option for another, but this Ok too I guess. At least it's not 90k and 4 years

your just peeved because we just signed a 32 yr old defender to fill the gap left when the 35 yr old defender left? if he comes in and tightens that defence up then surely that's good? we only need 2 or 3 yrs from him and at 80k a week that sounds like good business.

I'm peeved because I believe we have signed a player who I believe isn't good enough. 80k a week !!! That's nowhere near good business - he has been poor since his drug ban and its the reason why he wasn't offered a new contract by City - if he could still do a job they wouldn't be letting him go.

Would prefer to save that 80k a week ( nearly £4mil a year ) and put it towards a better cb

Liverpool have today agreed the free transfer of defender Kolo Toure from Manchester City.

Toure arrived on Merseyside today to conclude the formalities of his move having returned from a post season tour of the United States with his former club.

The 32 year old is the first Liverpool signing of the summer, although he can not technically register as having joined his new club until July 1.  Liverpool, however, say the deal is ‘agreed in principle’ and have announced the African’s impending arrival.

Brendan Rodgers has been seeking to stiffen his defence following the retirement of Jamie Carragher, so Toure’s experience is seen as a useful commodity.   He is not, however, likely to be Liverpool’s only defensive recruit. The club is still hoping to lure Greek centre half Kyriakos Papadopoulos for what they hope will be a £12 million transfer.

Toure moved to Manchester City for £16 million in 2009 and was at that time considered one of the Premier League’s elite defenders.  After being suspended for six months after admitting accidentally taking a banned substance in 2011 he rarely featured under former manager Roberto Mancini.

Toure will hope a move to Anfield will reignite his career.

Let's see how he goes before we start complaining lads.

The guy has hardly played in the last 2 seasons so will have his work cut out for him, if he intends on being a regular and capturing his form from 4-5 seasons ago.

Either way, not really fussed we have signed him.

Good squad player but wont really improve the first team imo. His experience is valuable, and we need some squadplayers to fill the gap left by carra (and probably skrtel and coates) so it might be a decent buy for is.

Liverpool today announced an agreement in principle to sign defender Kolo Toure – but how much do you know about the Ivorian? Brush up on your knowledge with our 10 facts about the centre-back.


1. Toure's trophy haul boasts 11 honours, including league titles at all three of his previous clubs - ASEC Mimosas, Arsenal and Manchester City. His other medals came from winning the FA Cup and Community Shield on three occasions each, along with lifting the CAF Super Cup at the age of 18.

2. Kolo is one of three brothers plying their trade in professional football, with his siblings Yaya and Ibrahim playing for Manchester City and Al-Nasr respectively. He had previously played alongside Yaya since the start of the 2010-11 campaign, when his sibling arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Barcelona.

3. Highlighting his leadership qualities, Toure has captained Arsenal, City and the Ivory Coast national team in his career. While accumulating 105 international caps, the defender has been a runner-up in the Africa Cup of Nations twice and has appeared in five matches at the World Cup. Toure has also found the net six times for his country.

4. Toure will become the first Ivorian to join Liverpool in the club's history and becomes the latest player from the African continent to represent the Reds. Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi was the last African to sign for the club. Kolo is the eighth player Brendan Rodgers has brought to Anfield since being appointed manager in the summer of 2012.

5. Having played as a winger or a striker in the very early stages of his career, Toure reverted to a defensive midfield role before eventually being deployed as a defender.  After initially being a utility player for Arsenal, the 32-year-old consolidated his position at the heart of their defence and has remained a centre-back ever since.

6. In a quirky twist of fate, Toure made his first-ever Arsenal appearance against Liverpool in the FA Community Shield in 2002 and also donned the Gunners' armband for the first time when facing the Reds in the League Cup five years later.

7. Toure will become the fifth player to swap Manchester City for Liverpool, following in the footsteps of Patrick Finnerhan, Matt Busby, Robbie Fowler and Craig Bellamy. The centre-back's free transfer means each of the last three deals have included no money changing hands. Eight players have travelled in the opposite direction, with the most recent being Nigel Clough in January 1996.

8. During his spells with former clubs, the Ivorian clashed with the Reds 21 times - he ran out victorious on 10 occasions, drawing seven times and losing just four matches. The defender found the net against Liverpool once, in a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in November 2006.

9. Kolo should not be short of conversation with Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones when he is introduced to the Liverpool squad - the pair share a birthday, March 19. The Ivorian is one year older than his new teammate, however - Toure was born in 1981, while Jones was born in 1982. The aforementioned Nigel Clough also celebrates his birthday on that date - he was born in 1966.

10. Brendan Rodgers will become Toure's fourth different club manager since arriving on English shores, and the fourth different nationality the Ivorian has worked under. Frenchman Arsene Wenger brought the defender to Arsenal, Welshman Mark Hughes signed him for Manchester City, where Italian Roberto Mancini took the reins shortly after. Now Toure will look forward to working with Northern Irishman Rodgers.

he (or anyone else joining us) doesnt need to be the second coming of franz beckenbauer to improve us.
if he can just do the bread and butter basics like head the ball /clear corners etc he will improve us immeasurably.

Exactly.

Business wise well, Carragher's going out on 90+grand plus, Toure if believed at 70 grand a week then is hardly poor business and there are rumors it's a lot lower than that so finacially it's not a problem. The catch is though, he's got to be able to do the stuff yakka spoke of if we're to get value for money (like any player) no matter his wages.

I haven't watched him for years so I've no idea what he's like now, I remember him for Arsenal in their midfield and he was a player I rated quite highly. He's probably not that same player now, but this is an 'experience' transfer as much as it is an 'ability' one.

Hope it works out. Also, it's nice to see business getting done early even if it is in principle, well in Rodgers & co.

Good move from Rodgers, free transfer of an experienced CB, I'm happy with this deal. Toure will bring much needed experience to the backline. He'll do a job & provide a buffer zone allowing the long term replacement to settle in (Assuming we sign a decent young CB  )

This could easily turn out to be a Gary Mac type move and that turned out ok. Remember the pen against Barca. I was facing the wrong way on the Kop. What a night....

Sensible transfer.  We're probably going to lose the majority of our central defence this summer so someone like Toure on  a free, who has PL experience will be a good squad player to have for a season or two.

And now hopefully we'll also have the funds to buy a good CB.
