Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Things were looking pretty good until a couple of days ago, sorted out the midfield and got rid of most of the older players with big wages who were not first choice. Sorted out new contracts for some important players, even getting rid of Carroll was fine to reduce wages as long as we brought in reinforcements. Dempsey and Sturridge and we would have been sorted, I just can't believe we let Carroll go and didn't sign at least two new forwards, absolutely gutted !

It can only mean that our priority all along was to reduce the wages, I hope I'm wrong but I think we might struggle to finish as high as we did last year.

I've always thought the future is looking good with FSG in charge but I really don't know what to believe anymore, I can't wait to hear interviews from Brendan, Ian, Tom and John.

Its not simply about Dempsey! All summer it appeared they were priming for the sale of Agger.

We have a squad that lacks depth...

They won't splash the cash, they said that from the start. So no surprises there.
Presumably more will be expected from the Ressies. Maybe one or two more will prove them or Rodgers right.
We can't expect the owners to do what others do with their oil money on a whim.
It is what it is, end of.

as i said before this asset stripping points towards the fact that the owners would sell if they got a decent offer. why else would you sack a living legend off the back of a trophy and another final, bring in your own man and then not back him sufficiently for what he wants?

Two things:

1.Said at the start i believe we were "sold a pup" with these owners. Not so much anything against them personally, but Americans (and more broadly western owners) are in business to make money (take money out, not put in). They will make an initial investment (as Lerner did) but if they see no return they will reign in the spending. There are only two good type of owners..a.owners that have an affinity with the club (usually fans of the club), b.filthy rich owners who enjoy throwing/wasting money at their plaything. We have neither, what we have are investors.

2.The owners got badly burned by Kenny's transfer madness. They went in naively and allowed him to spend crazy money...75 million for Carroll, Downing, Henderson. They only realised their error after the media response who guffawed at us. This has left them ultra careful (too careful) in the transfer dealings and poor Brendan has suffered for it.

I said when Brendan took over he had a massive job to undo the damage that Kenny inflicted on the club financially, but i didnt think it would be this tough. He has an incredibly difficult job working for owners who seem to be finished in terms of making money available for transfers. He has to sell to bring people in, or go for loans. Hes got mission impossible.

I doubt anyone will come in with an offer anyway. If Rodgers can't get these players to improve and his own signings don't help much then his and FSG's future at the club looks bleak.

In the short term the kids will have to step up to the plate at a time when they shouldn't be under that kind of pressure. In the longer term FSG's austerity plan is likely to backfire by the end of the season unless considerable progress has been made particularly in the home games.

It's too simplistic to blame Kenny's signings for the small budget Brendan has had to work with. This just looks like the summer of 2009 all over again when Rafa had virtually nothing to work with.

Apart from having been burned by the transfers of the last 18 months I fear we are also paying the price for the Sh*t being levelled at FSG by Red Sox fans and the US media about their lack of funds as well.

Are FSG (Henry and Werner) now screwing us out of funds to prop up their first love. They want us to be self sustaining but they refuse to make a final decision on the stadium, we can't compete to get in the Champions Lge places with the current squad so we can't sustain ourselves towards them places without financial backing from THEM.

They need to show they have the ***** for this sport and stump up the cash or feck off and allow someone who has got the balls for this highly competitive sport.

Ball's in your court JWH & TW.

Assuming that the manager was keen on signing a striker, and I believe he must have been, then I think that, given the urgent need to strengthen in that area -- and the cost relative to the potential upside of doing so -- FSG ought to have made more money available to the manager. I understand the need for the club to be run on a sound financial basis, and I don't but this idea that we have to spend silly money to make the top four -- the competition for those places consists of Spurs, Arsenal, Newcastle et al, not City, Chelsea and Utd-- but when the need to strengthen is as great as it is and the cost of addressing it is relatively modest then w'eve every right to expect money to be made available. It could, after all, be the difference between challenging for the top four and failing to do so, and if we are to fall short, we would be at risk of losing key players and the whole project facing another almighty setback. That's not in FSG's interest because to increase the value of the club, and to ultimately make a profit, we need to be in the CL.

the owners arent exactly blameless themselves on that score, dont forget it was them who went to a baseball stats guru to find a DoF who believed in their stats based recruitment philosophy and plenty of our signings like downing and henderson were hailed in the press by comoli as moneyball signings.
even if kenny chose the players (which i doubt) it was their DoF that negotiated the transfer fee`s.
when they first arrived they said they were going to revolutionise the way transfers were done in this country, they were heavily involved.
