Chelsea have spent £30+ on Hazard and are about to sign Oscar for £25m. Spurs have £40-50m to spend plus the Modric money. Arsenal have money to burn but the manager chooses not to spend it. United aren't short of a few quid. We are currently light years away from properly challenging for the very best players available when you consider our resources.
I at least expect the fans to be realistic like the manager is when it comes to signing players. Past mistakes mean that there's no way we're going to attract "world class" players as you put it.
We can always find better players than dempsey and allen and at the same price if we look abroad. Look at Mesut Ozil, he went to Real Madrid for 10m and Marko Marin was bought by Chelsea for 8m. Good players who would have improve our squad if we were interested in them. Spare me the wages, we could afford these type of players if we moved quickly we could sign players like them at good prices. The problem is, since 2008, we have been attrocious in the transfer market, bar Suarez and Enrique, we have signed complete dross and we continue to do the same mistake over and over again. We never replaced our key players properly! We replaced Riise for Dossenna, Hyypia for Kyriagkos, Voronin for Bellamy, Raul Meireles for Henderson, Torres for Andy Carroll, Alonso for Aquilani, and the list goes on. Hence, as a club we regressed because of our poor signings in the transfer window. We cannot afford to do this anymroe, we need to replace players we sell with better ones, not with players at the same level or worse, but better ones that would improve our starting eleven. I can't see type of players like Allen or Dempsey that would help us back to top 4 spot, they might be great squad players to have, but I think we have enough of those, we need KEY players who would make the difference, not necessarly known and ''world class'' players who would cost huge money, quality players that would make a difference in our team. I'm sure there are tons of them lurking around Europe.
I hope Borini turns out to be a fantastic buy, but I won't expect too much, especially that he is Italian and we had 2 italians before him who turned out to be complete flops
