If we wanted an unknown yet potentially up and coming manager with no previous experience with a big club, and no real experience in the top half of the table, or in Europe, then Martinez and Rodgers will be candidates worth looking at. To employ either though would feel like a final toss of the dice, a last gamble to claw our way back into the business end of the Premier League. If it fails, we sink further and spend another season out of the top quarter of the table. At that point the entire mentaliity of the club will have changed. We will be cementing our position as a mid-table team and will likely fade further into obscurity. We will have slowly but surely seeped away to "just another number". Ever walked and looked back over your shoulder, amazed at just how far you've come? Well we've been doing that in reverse and all this talk of Martinez and Rodgers, f*cking Wigan and Swansea merely proves how far back we've moved. If, however, one of these guys comes in and against the odds manages to bring in a few quality players (players who would have no real sense of who they are working for), and to genuinely intimidate the likes of Fergie into worrying that Liverpool just might be back in business, whilst steadily climbing the table back into the top four, well...GREAT!
Ain't gonna happen though, is it? These next couple of weeks and the ensuing league campaign I honestly feel will make or break us. The times they are a-changin' and I for one am brickin' it.
