Brendan Rogers and Roberto Martinez are too...risky to be honest. Sure some might say that Martinez has got Wigan playing an attractive style of football with the limited funds he has, and could possibly produce more given the money FSG has, but he's too inexperience and isn't what we need at this point. Kenny's sacking was inevitable with the type of results and people should seriously start using their brains to think instead of their heart. Some of the worse decisions are often made for sentimental reasons. 6 home wins in a season is disastrous no matter which way you look at it. Benitez and Hodgson were sacked for their poor results and I don't see why Kenny should be treated any differently in a results-orientated game.
Rafa Benitez's got vast experience in English and Spanish football. And I trust his judgement on players a lot more compared to Kenny. Some of the purchases he's made under the financial climate he was under back then were really good. Alonso, Arbeloa, Reina, Agger, Garcia, Skrtel, Lucas, Torres, etc. Even Benayoun and Maxi, who while not being regulars, were always capable of producing the goals. I'm certain he'll be able to find some solid players for a low fee. Don't forget that he's still got a decent reputation in Spain so there'll be many players there who could be eager to work with him. Now that we have boardroom stability, it will be interesting to see what he can do with the funds available. Plus, if he could turn Crouch into a decent and reliable striker, I'm sure he can find a method that will turn Andy Carroll into a striker that scores 20 goals a season. Carroll and Crouch are very similar players after all, it's just that the former has more built, and a better attitude. I would not mind at all if Rafa came back, as I would have a lot more confidence in his ability to manage a glory-chasing team, compared to that of a manager who spends most of his time battling relegation. I would have him as my #2 option.
Next up is Jurgen Klopp. Now why he would leave the German champions, who play such attractive football, I wouldn't know. There's absolutely no reason for him to leave but if he does, I hope he takes Kagawa with him. Laurent Blanc is another option but he's going to be with France at the Euros and we need a manager in sharpish so as to get the transfers and training regimes sorted. Which brings us to the next available manager in Andre Villa Boas, who is my preferred option. He will be eager to prove himself in England, though there was a report which I posted a week ago, that he had already agreed to joining a club. Perhaps it's Liverpool? Sure it's a gamble, as it is a gamble with Benitez as well but the only manager who is virtually guaranteed of going into a club and having instant success is Jose Mourinho. Opposing fans hate him because of his attitude but I'm sure fans of any club will grow to love him when he uses that wit on opposing managers.
The next manager has to be media-savvy, whoever he is. The Suarez debacle brought so much of unwanted and negative attention to the club all around the world. And even when incidents that do not concern Liverpool happen, Suarez is often mentioned in the same paragraph. Take a look at Drenthe's accusation at Messi, Heinze, etc for using the word Negro for example. It has nothing to do with us but Liverpool and Suarez was mentioned. If there's a PR or Communications manager, that person is going to have a very important role for the years to come in ensuring that the club is spoken about for their heroics on-field, and not the off-field antics. The manager will also need to buy some really creative and dynamic players to take the pressure of Suarez. Would love to see Sterling and Shelvey more often. And who knows perhaps Aquilani and Cole might play a pivotal role next season. Their creativity and link-up play will suit Suarez. We've always been dependent on 1 or 2 players over the past 10 seasons. From Owen, to Torres and now Suarez. The common factor is of course Steven Gerrard. We need the opposition to worry about the entire team being a threat, not just a couple of players. Raheem Sterling should feature more, the fans love him, and he is possibly the best young attacking player the club has seen in some time.
Sure you can claim that Kenny needed another season to change things around but nothing is certain, and even so, those posters sitting on a high horse should have held the same view whereby the previous manager was concerned. Any manager that can accept a successful Cup run over mediocre form in the League isn't a manager that's capable guiding us to the higher levels. Sure it might be our first trophy in 6 years but this isn't Birmingham. From his refusal to play more experienced players like Kuyt or Maxi, to the manner in which the Suarez fiasco was handled, the summer signings, etc, there were many legit reasons for him to be fired, like it or not. You can lay the blame on luck being against us as we hit the post close to 34 times, but the fact that Man Utd had 51 shots fewer then us, but scored 41 more goals just shows that it isn't luck, it's lack of quality.
