Raul Meireles - Rent Boy Mark II

The Premiership - General Discussion

Postby f9Torres » Tue Nov 02, 2010 2:54 pm

he wasnt a deffensive player. he always played with one of them. first of all, assunçao who is playing in atletico now. since he left, fernando or ruben micael. what he used to do, is play with another midfielder in front of the defensive one.

example:

defensive midfielder

offensive mid-meireles

what we see here is him playing near the deffensive one while gerrard is closer to the striker

he'll adapt, i'm confident of it.

he still needs a more defined role in the current system we play. i'm still not entirely sure what type of midfielder he wants to be. it was almost as if he was playing under instructions on sunday as he rarely ventured forward anywhere near the final third. infact lucas got into more advanced positions than him.

it hardly helps that he's been messed about. since arriving he's already played in three different positions.

I was in Portugal when we bought him and all Portugese that I asked about him told me the same thing, he is a defensive player and they watched him all the time as there was a big Porto contingent there.

My point which seems to have been lost, is that it is a reflection on our team and indeed the English game that a player regarded in his own country as a "defensive player" is regarded here as more of a creative player.

It could be that the Portugese league has such an abundance of creative players that a player with Meireles' skill set is deemed merely a "defensive player" or that the English game (generally) is so rooted in the physical nature of things that Meireles (who is not the biggest)  comes across as more of a creative player.

Either way I like the player.

he is not a defensive midfielder and he will never be. i repeat, he has always played with a specilist in defence. even in the world cup pepe who is a centre back played as defensive midfielder while meireles played near tiago. this doesn't mean that the guy is creative, what he is not, but is is a "total" midfielder who can do many things good, the most important to me, he always try to associate with other players, try to touch quick and inmediatly moves creating some spaces.

From the offical

"I am really enjoying it and like living in the city," Meireles told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"Me and my family have found a nice apartment in a good place and we like to walk around and see the city.

"The people are very friendly and they have made me and my family very welcome.

"We have been to some great restaurants and it is a good place to live.

"Understanding the likes of Stevie and Carra is very difficult but they speak slowly to me so I can understand them.

"Lucas and Fabio Aurelio speak Portugese like me and they have both helped me a lot."

The former Porto ace has also spoke about how inspiring it is to hear 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before kick-off at Anfield.

"The Kop is special to play in front of and I am really enjoying playing for Liverpool," he added.

"When I come onto the pitch at Anfield the first person I always look for is my wife.

"In our last match against Blackburn I saw her with a mobile phone recording the crowd and Gerry Marsden singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. That was amazing.

"When you are on the field before the game it does inspire you and it is fantastic to hear the crowd singing that."

Meireles also spoke about the mutual appreciation tattoo society at Melwood and his banter with Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger.

"We have spoken about tattoos and I always ask them where they got them done," he added.

"I think I have more than Martin but first place goes to Daniel Agger, for now. I am going to try and catch him up!"

???

Last year we played with two defensive midfielders. So when Masch played does that mean that Lucas was then the attacking player? Same goes for Lucas and Poulsen this year.

It is possible to play with more than one defensive player you know.

well, when a midfielder is usually arriving to the box and another one is always keeping the position, i can see clearly who is being defensive and who isn't.

Raul had a good game today, and his pass to Torres for the 2nd was superb. He's no right winger, but once we sort out the flanks i expect him to move to the middle and continue to improve our squad.

I agree if we can keep with the Lucas, Merieles, Gerrard triangle and add some quality width I think we shall be a force to be reckoned with.

His influence is growing by the game. He is always looking for the ball. An impressive display from the little guy last night although consideration has to be given to the fact that West Ham were woeful and gave our MF the freedom of Anfield to dictate play.

had a really good game yesterday, what worries me though he gets shrugged off really easily, so he might find it difficult against physically stronger teams.
