Taken from the Echo:

"All in all since the new American owners took over, the Reds have spent just shy of £100m and around £47m net - almost double the net transfer outlay of Tom Hicks and George Gillett's entire Anfield occupation."

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has become the latest figure to question Manchester City's record £400 million sponsorship deal with Etihad Airlines.

The contract includes naming rights for Eastlands, a major input into a yet-to-be-built training facility close to the stadium and an extension of their shirt sponsorship.

As Etihad are an airline based in Abu Dhabi, home of Blues owner Sheikh Mansour, concerns have been aired that the deal has been artificially inflated to help City achieve UEFA's demand to live within their means as part of their financial fair play initiative.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger earlier this week claimed the deal "raises the real question about the credibility of Financial Fair Play'', and Ayre has now added his voice to the chorus of disapproval.

Quoted by the Independent on the club's pre-season tour of Asia, he said: "Is Etihad, Manchester City and Sheikh Mansour a related party? If they are, then it's up to UEFA to rule on them.

"When I spoke at Soccerex earlier this year, I was on a panel about financial fair play. The guys from UEFA who are managing it said there would be a robust and proper process about related-party transactions.''

Of the stadium name change, he added: "It hasn't happened anywhere in Europe where a football club has renamed its existing stadium and it's had real value.

"It was called the City of Manchester Stadium or Eastlands for the last nine years and now it's going to be called something else - and someone has attached a huge amount of value to that.

"I find that odd because there is no benchmark in football that says you can rename your stadium and generate that amount of value. Mike Ashley tried it at Newcastle [sportsdirect.com@St James' Park]. But nobody calls it that and it doesn't have that kind of value.''

City on Tuesday night issued a statement branding Wenger's comments "unfounded and regrettable''.

The statement added: "Manchester City is a pro-active member of the European Clubs Association and is working actively and with transparency with regard to financial fair play.''

Have to give our owners som real kudos for letting Comolli and Kenny spend so much money.

Regarding the fair play rules this was what I was worried about because it's so easy to just "set up" a deal that bypasses it.

They had little choice mate, the sponsers have paid top dollar and expect a strong challenge. Aston Villa or Wigan don't quite get the same deals yet thats where we were heading.....

In this case the "sponsors" are essentially the owners.

no, they're stakeholders, they invest in our club and want to be reknowned for sponsoring one of England's top sides

If I was sponsoring them I'd rather they were challenging at the top than languishing in mid table obscurity

Reminds me of Rafa when he first took over as manager. I have a lot of time for any manager or owner who spends time with supporters.

Not a big fan of John's comments today... kinda goes against our One game at a time philosophy and adds pressure.  Already see headlines like "Liverpool owner demands 4th"

He has only said what everyone knows.  I havent got a problem with him, so far very impressed with the bloke
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

I 100% agree with Mr.Henry.

The club cannot survive without CL football. If the squad had remained the same then maybe top 4 as a minimum would be unrealistic, but most agree that we should be competing for 4th based on our current squad.

John henry and NESV as right in saying it is our expectation.

owners demand results after spending 10s of millions...hardly a shocking story.

We must finish 4th or better...no excuses.

Interesting, read.  :)

Tom Werner, the Liverpool chairman, has said Fenway Sports Group will continue to invest in restoring "the lustre" of the club but that Uefa's financial fair play rules must be enforced to enhance the competitiveness of the Premier League.

Liverpool are close to taking their summer spending to £54m with the £6m purchase of José Enrique from Newcastle United and, having paid £57.8m for Andy Carroll and Luis Suárez in January, FSG has sanctioned the biggest spending spree in the club's history. Not surprisingly John W Henry, the club's principal owner, has admitted it would be a major disappointment should Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League this season. Werner has refused to set defined targets but said FSG's investment in the club is far from over.

"I don't want to promise so much," the Liverpool chairman said. "I know John has said we're going to be top four and Kenny [Dalglish] says well why can't we win. But we just want to move forward – we want to be better this year than last year and just keep going on the right track."

Werner added: "I think the most important thing, and it may seem obvious, is put on a quality product for your fans. These are people who spend their hard earned pounds to come to see the club, and we've got supporters all around the world, who expect a quality product, and so it's been our goal to try to improve our position on the pitch and to try and create an environment for players to say they want to play in Liverpool, and to bring some of the lustre that all the fans know back to the club."

Liverpool's chairman has echoed Henry's view on financial fair play, however. The club's principal owner recently backed Arsène Wenger's suspicion of Manchester City's £400m naming-rights deal with Etihad Airways, tweeting: "A club's best player has to be worth at least 10% of your naming rights. Mr Wenger says boldly what everyone thinks."

Werner said: "I hope there's some teeth in it because I think it's healthy for the sport. It will make the sport more competitive. Part of our assumption when we came in last year was that financial fair play was coming into existence and that we'd hope it would have some teeth. It will make the performance on the pitch more competitive."

In an interview with LFC TV, entitled "Tom Werner: Up Close and Personal", which airs on Friday at 7.30pm, the club chairman also backed Dalglish to continue his dramatic overhaul of the team's performances this season.

Werner added: "I can't think of somebody who embodies the relentlessness and the drive and the attitude of excellence better than Kenny. Obviously we knew of him before we met him. I think he is a natural leader; I've had the privilege to watch him as he trains the men at Melwood. And I just think he's so charismatic and I think he's been able to instil a sense of purpose into the club; and when he says something, I think people listen."
