Lessons to be learned

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Wow! What a game. Bizarre wasn't it?

Two nil down away. Then we made the unlikely comeback. Then we were down to ten men. And suddenly we scored two more goals. Taking all three points to Anfield. Surely this calls for a celebration? No, wait. Wasn't our three points just pure luck today? Wasn't our weak spots exposed time and again? Let's just have a look at the Fulham goals. First goal. Mistake nr 1. Diao gives the ball away in midfield. Mistake nr 2. Hyypia is outpaced and beaten by the slow brian mc bride. Mistake nr 3. Kirkland leaves the line rushing for the ball at Mc Bride's feet. Three errors in a row. Kirkland perhaps making the biggest one. A sin against the ABC of goalkeeping.

Then we have the second goal. Mistake nr 1. Diao and Hamann goes for the ball and crushes into each other. Mistake nr 2. Hyypia is again outpaced and outsmarted for the n-th time in the game.

Apart from these obvious combination of errors that led to Fulhams goals. There were numerous of other errors that would have cost us dear against a top team. Best performers: Alonso, Baros, Cisse, Carragher and Traore. Worst offenders: Hyypia, (Kirkland,) Garcia, Diao

So what can we take from this game. I would focus on three things.

Lesson nr 1. We need to sort out our defence. Hyypia is a accident waiting to happen back there. He gets exposed too many times just by the lack of pace and by his positioning errors. Carragher cleared up his mess most of the times, but both goals could have been stopped if we had more pace back there. We desperately need one or maybe two new defenders. Josemi did ok. Although he should have kept his head cool after his first booking. The big positive for me in this game was Traore. He did really well. He was comfortable on the ball and sound defensively. He completely bossed his opponents and actually looked dangerous when going forward.

Lesson nr 2. We need to gat a more balanced midfield line up. First of all. Never ever play Diao again. At least not together with Hamann. Two defensive midfielders with zero creativity. That line up was a disgrace to the fans, and we almost paid a hefty price because of this. I know Diao was trying to play football, but he might as well have been practising breast strokes. Garcia was also terrible out there, giving the ball away too often and he was not contributing at all defensively.

Lesson nr. 3. Never give up. No matter how bad things look. Go on keep fighting and work, work, work work, until the referee blows the final whistle. This we did today. And I admit we had a lot of luck. But we were also fighting hard for the three points. It paid off. Hard work always pays off.

Totally!!!

Whats winning the FA, League or Uefa cup or even the league, champions league or beating Man United at Old Trafford when you can beat Fulham.

You talk garbage all the time.

Hyypia's a class act. Kirklands a good propsect but still inexperienced and Michael Owen IS a world class player.

Where are you from?

Hyypia is not a class act. Ferdinand, Campbell, Lucio, Puyol etc. are class acts Hyypia is not. He is outpaced, outsmarted out of position, poor with the ball etc. That is not class.

Kirkland is not safe. He should have played regular football with a lesser team instead of sitting on the bench for 4 years. That would have made him a more reliable and experienced goalkeeper.

And you keep on whining about Owen. Stop please. Let him sit on the bench for a few years in spain, and let him return to man city. He will probably make a frightening attacking trio with Fowler and Mc Moneymad.

Your comments about Hyypia are disapointing. Last season apart from Gerrard he was our most consistent player. Yes we all know he lacks pace, but to blame him for both goals is incorrect. The first goal was a good move, and for the second Carragher got caught out of poistion.

As for Kirkland I don't think that getting nutmegged in that fashion is a huge mistake, his positioning was good but anyone can get nutmegged. He is going to be an excelent keeper eventually.

Let's just be happy and savour the moment. We did have our share of luck but then, on our travels recently, we were bad and probably do not deserve the luck to score (we never did) but in the games we lost, some of the goals conceded was bad luck also.

I am sure Benithez will eventually drill his ideas into the team and they should be learning to implement the manager's ideas and try to eliminate mistakes in the future.

What is important is that this game will have addressed a major part of the team's weakness - psychological fragility in our travels. This win, coming from a 2 goal deficit, will have a tremendous effect on confidence in away games. I am sure they will improve their away form from now on and will not suffer too much indimadition from the opposition and their fans. This is what matters most.

It is amazing what extra confidence can do to people's motivations, self belief and physical performance. Go Reds! :)

Banana you go on about luck but how much have we had of that on our travels this season? Things do even themselves out in football and i agree that Liverpool did get a few breaks but it just made me start thinking about Garcia's dissallowed goal at Bolton, the free kick that wasnt at Old Trafford etc. Why you always criticise Hyypia and Kirkland is just hard to believe. Granted he is not the quickest but Hyypia is still a key player at the back for us and Kirkland is a top quality keeper. Get behind the team.

i disagree with the comment about Hyppia being a class act, hes s**t and hes gonna start costing us......but apart from that we can critisise them week in and week out for silly mistakes that every team makes, what does it matter, we took the 3 points didnt we which is gonna be a great confidence boost for them, at the minute Liverpool can only improve so instead of ripping them to bits Banana get behind them, they did a fantastic job going from 2-0 down today to winning 4-2...call yourself a supporter ? a supporter backs them all the way !!

he is ****** huh. He has been the backbone of our defence for years, and although he may lack pace is still one of the beteer defenders going around.
