Roy Hodgson is happy to see Liverpool linked with Joe Cole, but insists he has not held talks over a deal for the midfielder.

Cole is looking for a new club after being released by Chelsea and he has attracted interest from North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, bookmakers have suspended betting on which club Cole will join next season amid rumours the England international is bound for Anfield.

Reds boss Hodgson has not spoken to the 28-year-old recently and refused to expand on rumours he could become a Liverpool player.

"I'm not a betting man so that doesn't actually play a big part that betting is suspended," Hodgson told Sky Sports News. "I don't even know enough about betting to know what that means.

"As far as I know, Joe Cole is still a player looking for a club.

"I know we've been connected with him, and it's good to know we're connected with players of that quality, but I don't have anything to report on the subject.

"I haven't had any discussions with him, but I had a brief chat a while back.

"If you want to know about transfer targets, and how things are progressing, you'll have to ask (managing director) Christian Purslow because he's the man looking after those discussions, not me."

Hodgson also revealed he met with Liverpool co-owner George Gillett prior to the club's opening pre-season friendly against Al-Hilal in Austria being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

He added: "It was nice to meet him, of course. I don't know him very well, but it was nice to speak to him.

"It was good of him to come to the game. It's a pity that, I'm sure, like the rest of us he would have liked to have seen Liverpool play."

Ziegler tops Hodgson's left-back list

Swiss international defender Reto Ziegler has emerged as new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson's top transfer target to fill the vacant role at left-back.

Sampdoria star Ziegler, who starred in the group stages of this summer's World Cup, could be available for a cut-price fee of around £6million as reports suggest he is keen to leave the club.

Following Luigi del Neri's departure for Juventus earlier this summer, a number of players are thought to be on the verge of leaving - with former Spurs player Ziegler among them.

The Swiss has some Premier League experience from his time at White Hart Lane, as well as a loan spell with Wigan in 2006.

And while Spurs fans will remember him as something of a lightweight in defence, Ziegler's reputation has burgeoned since quitting north London in 2007.

The 24-year-old is now regarded as one of Europe's top defensive prospects and would be a good fit in Hodgson's rebuilding of the side.

Yesterday, Hodgson admitted left-back had now become one of his priorities after releasing Fabio Aurelio and agreeing the sale of Emiliano Insua to Fiorentina at the weekend.

"We are short and that is going to be one of the priorities," Hodgson said.

"We need to find a replacement for Emiliano and Fabio. That is one job we will have to do.

"As far as we understand, the deal (for Insua) has been completed between the clubs and his agent is sorting out personal terms.

"Maybe it was the right time for him to move on."

Cisshoko for left back. Murdered us in CL last year. Ziegler?? Not sure, i remember him being very light weight. What about trying to steal one of gibbs, clichy from :censored:

?? Figuerora? not bad, but not really top drawer.

I'd go Cisshoko. Michael Johnson, guiza, raul, and a big signing like ashley young or Muellar. Obviously with Mascherano money.

Instead of a signing on fee they will give him a luxury cushion to offer warmth and comfort when sitting on the £100 Million Bench.

I tell you what this fecking Mancini is a different animal to Mark Hughes. They gave Hughes a shedload of cash and he bought Gareth Barry, Joleon Lescott, Jo, Benjani etc etc. Mancini's got the wonga now, and he's bought Adam Johnson, Yaya Toure, Mikel Arteta, David Silva etc etc.

They are going to be a HUGE challenger to anybody who has pretensions on winning the title next season. My money is going to be on them winning it (not that I've got any to bet with at the moment I'm fecking potless). Not only do I think they'll win it, but as time goes on and Man Utd/Chelsea don't spend anything, I think they might win it with a little bit in hand.

Not sure i would be that happy with Arteta going there. How much money is being talked about ?

Everton could do alot with 20 million probably.
They didnt have him for 2 thirds of last season anyway and still had a decent season.
Moyes has a decent record of buying players imo. Although i am yet to be convinced by the russian they signed last season.
The likes of Arteta, Jagielka Pienaar and Cahill etc where all bought for relatively low fees and are obviously worth considerably more today.

The only reason it would be funny to me is that Everton obviously love Arteta.
