English referee Howard Webb has set a new World Cup final record after handing out 14 yellow cards and one red as Spain scored their first victory in the football tournament.

Yorkshireman Webb, 38, was kept on his toes, issuing nine yellow cards to the Dutch - including two and a red to Everton's John Heitinga - and five to Spain in a tense game which went into extra time.

Webb made history as the first Englishman to referee a World Cup final since 1974.

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson, co-commentating on the match for the BBC, said: "You might argue it was the most difficult match he has ever had to referee."

Wasn't the easiest of games to ref to be fair to him, I reckon he did a good job considering.

match, in truth, but that was always a strong possibility. I was glad to see Spain win but feel a bit sorry for the Dutch, despite their rather agricultural approach. With that said, some of the Spanish lads were a bit too quick to go to ground and flash the imaginary cards in Webb's direction. A fair result in the end, I reckon, and I hope Sabre's absolutely bladdered at the moment!

Final never lives up to expectation for me, guess there is too much at stake. This one didnt change anything for me

Kudos to Spanish, enjoy the celebration Sabre and Nanny (Though bloody Torres should have had that rest with an early exit but I digress)

I agree about Ref having a hard job, if had decided to go with first half sending off . He would have been crucified for spoiling the contest. Damned if you do, damned if you dont.
Really dont think the Dutch have much too complain about in that regard

Most importantly Paul the Octopus is a predicting legend.

Overall the finals for me were fairly enjoyable after poor opening games and those stupid bloody horns.

Quite enjoyed a few of games during finalswith the Germans being the team whose football I admired the most. I also had soft spot for those underdog legends New Zealand holding out the Roman Legions.

While I wasnt expecting Australia's dad's army to progress out of the group, I find myself as an Anglophile disappointed yet again with England's performance.

Star of tourney for me was Dutchman Snejider though if Germany had made the final it would have been Muller and Paul the Octopus

Special mention to a certain Paraguay model whose agent is a PR genius

Been a lot of fun on here and at least it was great distraction from summer off season madness

I think the Dutch were cumbersome in the tackle and the Spainards took advantage at times with their theatrics Good Yank. I'm thankful a footballing side one, this WC was hampered by the tactical decisions the managers employed-not to loose. Apart from the Germans of course. Overall I thought it was a disappointing tournament and at times found myself flicking over to Wimbledon or the Rugby League

they were more interesting. Can't wait for Liverpool to kick a ball in anger as I found my passion for the game seriously waning, NEVER thought I'd say that.

Not bad. Could have sent one or two off, but in such a big match did anyone really want that - other than the opponents of course. The foot in Alonso's chest was a bad 'un, but you have to give benefit of the doubt and say it was accidental. About time football took many lessons from rugby and had a sin bin, 10 mins off for that would have been a more apt punishment.

Agree re the Spanish 'tactics', plenty on BBC were critical of the Dutch for their heavy tackling and spoiling approach, but not so much of the Spanish for making every foul seem like they'd been hit by a truck or bullet, and trying to get their pound of flesh. Both sides are as bad as each other for exaggerating the effects of gravity, did Robben get booked for diving as the BBC claimed or was it the more probable result of his moaning at the ref for the next five minutes?

Did either side deserve to win? Probably not. When Robben had his 1-on-1 that Casillas luckily saved with his foot, my immediate instinct was he should go round the keeper. He had the angle to do it.

Last and only previous time a European champion went on to win the World Cup, they beat Holland in the final................................

Wish I could remember where it was I read that Spain's European Championship was their first. Erm, no. They won it in 1964. I'd laugh if that was on s*y teletext! Might have been on SSN

Exactly. I personally think that English refs (on the whole) try not to be the star of the game. In my opinion over the years they have actually used their discression which is the way it should be. For instance the "high ball" where studs are shown more often than not in England you would get away with that; that is, if the other player doesn't come off worst for wear. Nope, not on the continent or by those S.American refs where they'll blow up everytime. They always blow up when there is an advantage to be played as well and stop the game from flowing. On the whole I think foreign managers are kack and they always blow up for the poncey feckin fouls and anything where a bit of good old argy-bargy is going on.

Hell, the commons on Edgware rd where I used to play Sunday league would put these panzies to shame we used to have some right old proper ding dongs but at proffesional level the sport as a whole needs to man up.

final and the worst world cup ever. Why or why do people feel the need to be clever and change the ball. Am sure that ball was made for the rugby world cup. No wonder hardly any strikers shone at this world cup. Plus you know why Spain won because 7 of them play for barcalona. Its exactly the same as the :censored:

football. Teams like germany that had that ball all season coped alot better. Wereas england who didnt have that ball and have a few days together here and there no wonder they dont gel and obvious why spain have the upperhand. Anyone agree

ref was shiit, nearly ruined the game by not sending of Van Bommel and De Jong, can we have a sighted referree next final?

Glad Spain one - the best team in the world without doutbt. A pity Reina didn't play and Torres was total krap all tournament but I suppose they still have medals.

Yes to an extent I do agree. However every league in the world were offered the ball six months prior to the WC. But because of sponsors and contracts with Nike etc, the Premier league could not change the ball. Germany could and they did. But whatever the ball I think for example the Germans would have still beaten England regardless. I agree about the ball in terms of strikers and midfielders not scoring the 'fantastic' goals like they have done in past WC.

And I agree again that because of seven players in that side played for Barca it helped them to optimise their strengths, really it was Catalan Barca Vs Holland. I'm not using this to have a go at the Spainards far from it, the exact opposite in fact because I genuinley like the way the Spanish hold possesion and if that meant more national sides having a bigger amount of club players in their side to produce better football then so be it.

As for England pffft, the can't gel. Big time charlies overpaid hyped up girls who like Ozil stated; if players are moaning that they are bored i.e Rooney and Terry then they have no right to be at the WC. The English system needs an overhaul but I must admit I wasn't too affected they were knocked out anyway, Liverpool is the only team I CARE for and they arouse the passion in me like no other.
