Liverpool Football Club - The Rumour Mill

Rafa Benitez is reportedly interested in signing Valencia's towering forward Nikola Zigic this summer.

The Liverpool boss is hoping to pip fellow Premier League outfit Aston Villa to the attacker and may offer Anfield flop Albert Rieira as part of any deal.

The 6ft 7in forward spent last season warming the bench at the Mestalla after completing a successful loan spell at Racing Santander the previous term. Even though Valencia have finally given in and sold prized asset David Villa to Barcelona, Zigic is still unlikely to be part of Unai Emery's long-term plans.

The 29-year-old has had a mixed time in Spain since he first arrived in the country from Red Star Belgrade where he was something of a goal machine. Although over two metres tall, Zigic is still very adept with the ball at his feet and Benitez apparently sees the Serbian international as a good strike partner for Fernando Torres.

Valued between £8-10m, Zigic would no doubt welcome a move to the Premier League and Rafa will hope that the glamour of a move to Merseyside may help them snare the forward ahead of their midlands rivals.

Liverpool are set to make an enquiry for Manchester City left-back Sylvinho before he signs a new deal at Eastlands, we understand.

Sylvinho joined Man City last summer on a free transfer from Barcelona and is out of contract this summer.

City have reportedly offered the Brazilian a new deal with Roberto Mancini keen on keeping the veteran.

Mancini said: "Sylvinho is a fantastic man and player who always works very well. He is important for us."

However, Liverpool will also make an enquiry in the next 48 hours to see if Sylvinho is open to a move away.

Fabio Aurelio is out of contract and with no sign of a new deal for the left-back, Sylvinho has been made a target in the hope he could be a temporary fix.

Emiliano Insua started most games for the Reds last season, however Rafa Benitez believes the youngster could learn a lot from 36-year-old Sylvinho.

The Anfield outfit could be too late, however, with Sylvinho expected to pen a new deal to remain at City.

why would rafa want a 6ft 7 inch striker when he had a perfectly good one called crouch and he got rid of him. Rafa is clueless when it comes to transfer!

Rafa wanted Crouch to stay, but Crouch left because he was not guaranteed 1st team football.  Check the facts next time before you talk :censored: about the manager.

Zigic would be a great sign, ofcourse for a lower price.Though I doubt that Valencia would sell any striker now when they sold Villa.

I've also heard some rumours about Mata.We would offer Riera plus money for him.But Silva may go now so I doubt that Mata will be sold as well.I think that if we buy someone from Valencia this summer that would be Ever.

Sylvinho...isn't his true age closer to about 43 ? FFS...not being ageist, but there must be a fierce bang of old off him at this stage...

Stephen Ireland has asked Man City to listen to offers for him. I really hope we move to sign him.

What freakin' planet are you on ? This numpty is one year into a 5 year contract; he submits a "verbal" transfer request ('cos he knows a written one won't stand up....though I doubt he can write !); he loses his first team place and instead of rising to the challenge, he sulks and says "It's my ball and I'm going home !"...

Tell you what then, if that's a symptom of your attitude (along with all the other symptoms of your general psyche) then go find another club willing to put up with your petulance.

Not welcome at Anfield !

Would love Ireland to come to Liverpool.
He is a top attacking midfielder and would give the side far better balance in the middle than a Lucas and Mascherano combination.
I doubt he would come cheap though.

Stephen Ireland is a class act and has been treated very unfairly by a manager who doesn't know anything about him. He was the fans player of the year and then lost his first team place to more ''recognizable'' players when Mancini arrived.

He would be a great signing IMO, and would really help with the lack of depth we now have in midfield.

I don't know if this was a personal attack on the poster or what but I think you should wind you neck in and listen to other people views in future.
