I think you are right. Selling Torres for 70 million then spending that money to buy 3-4 decent players could work but actuality would be it will be weakening the team to line their pockets. They may give Rafa 20 million of it tops.

You only have to look at the Alonso sale and the Aquilani purchase. Rafa sold Alonso for £30m and then bought Aquilani for £20m. That £20m is being paid in installments, so where did the money go, including the missing £10m? It's either gone into the debt or their own pockets, all I know is it didn't go into Rafa's transfer kitty.

To be honest, whatever money we got for him, is (IMHO) definitely not going to be spent on strengthening the squad.
Even if it was, I don't believe that Benitez will make good use of it.

If a player exchange involving Joe Cole, Essien and Drogba was involved on the other hand, I'd snap their hands off to be sure.....

FERNANDO TORRES has told team-mates he is pledging his future to Liverpool.

Barcelona are being linked with a £70m move for the *superstar striker this summer and Chelsea are also weighing up a bid.

But Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina revealed he spoke to Torres this week as he wanted assurances that he is not about to quit Merseyside.

And the forward made it clear he is dedicated to helping *boss Rafa Benitez turn around the club’s ailing fortunes.

The Liverpool stopper said: “I am calm about Fernando. I spoke to him about his future and he has told me that he *intends to continue with us.

“Fernando suffered so many blows last season, but he is a professional and has always wanted to do well for us.

“That is why he remains *committed to this club.”

Benitez has also been linked with a switch away from Anfield as Juventus tracked him, and Inter Milan now have the Spaniard on their radar.

But Reina, who signed a new six-year contract in April, *believes the Anfield chief is on a revenge mission.

He insists the entire club is united as they bid to put the past nine months behind them after Liverpool failed to win a single trophy – and dropped out of the top four. Reina explained: “I am *convinced that Rafa will still be with us and that is good for us because he wants revenge in the next campaign.

“He is a coach who is able to relaunch Liverpool and to lead us to titles. Nobody can doubt his level.

Surely Shirley, Torres is now with the Spanish world cup squad and is  'off limits' to both other clubs and journos whilst until after the world cup?

Its gotta be more journalistic cr@p?

Which is why if he does end up going the deal should be a player plus cash deal. At least that way we can guarantee to get in someone of reasonable quality whom we probably wouldn't be able to buy outright anyway.

If it's Inter then Balotelli - he looks to be on his way out of Italy anyway

If it's Barca then either Bojan or Ya-Ya Toure.

Don't even want to think about if it's City or Chelsea as as firmly believe he would not play for any other English side.

Above all that though I hope what Nan posted a few posts up is true. We need to bear 1 thing in mind though, even if Torres and Stevie stay then it wont make any difference unless we bring in more talent around them. We will under perform next season and it will be that much harder to keep them.

I agree, and to be honest, if he does leave after giving us one more season and it is anything like this season, I'd fully support him leaving.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

Can anyone see us finishing higher than 7th if we keep Stevie and Torres and still don't sign any other decent players?

Yes
If the manager plays the strongest team in the best attacking formation with positive tactics.
Playing to your strengths can have a great effect on results

But you all know Rafa is generally quite stubborn with things so how likely is he to suddenly play his best team all the time? I suppose with no CL football there is a chance.

That's what we all wanted him to do, bav. Take a risk, die trying. I hope next season would be better.
