Well you can call me mad , but i'd be quiet happy for Lucas to step up if we sell alonso . Then we could buy a world class attacking player to either play right ,left or behind torres . Ribery . Done deal .

?? But the pound is stronger against the Euro now than it was in January?

£30 million and he can p1ss off wherever he wants too for all I care.

This whole gent and model professional does NOT apply any more though, he could and should have been upfront from the very start of this transfer season, it would have saved the club and fans a lot of grief, all this sneaky sh1t p1sses me off and he is now way off my favourite player list if he was ever on it.

This is what will happen though, he'll go to Real Madrid for about £25 million, play about 10 matches, then spend the next 2 seasons on the bench before being sold to Fulham or a similar team.

Anyway thanks for the good matches Xabi, wish someone had taught you how to attack and shoot a football but the passing and vision were top class, sorry it had to end like this.

I think that's a good shout but in all seriousness I don't think we need a direct replacement for Alonso, we need a more attacking midfielder and I'd like to see Benny given a go in that position or maybe Lucas can finally make the step up and prove me wrong or why not give Spearing a proper run in the team. If we loose Mascha as well though we are really in the sh1t.  :sniffle

I'd like to make a bet with you about this.

I bet that scenario does not happen. In fact I believe the reverse, he flourish over there.

Willing to take me up on that?

He wont be sold to Fulham or any other sh!t club for starters, but what may happen will be he may get exposed with not having a team work for him with his lack of pace. Spanish teams play the most attacking and fast games in Europe and what Xabi wont have will be the Dirk Kuyts, Bennayouns and Mascherano''s of the world getting back to him to help out.

Kaka and Lady boy certainly wont be doing the donkey work for him that our players do.

If he goes a big sell on clause will be neccasary after Madrid pockets the Owen wedge when he left for Newcastle.

Sabre made the point earlier that if Ronaldo was worth 80 million and Kaka 55 mill then Alonso was worth a huge sum. I'm not so sure. In Ronaldo you're getting a bloke who has almost single handedly won the Mancs the title in the last two seasons. He scored 40 odd goals from right wing a couple of seasons back, so yes I do think he is worth much more than Xabi. Similarly, In Kaka you are getting a recent World player of the year winner.

Much as we all love Xabi, lets be realistic here for a second. He is a central midfielder who doesn't score nor split defenses with passes. He keeps the ball well and reads it well, and at what he does he is one of the best. He isn't though a Ronaldo or a Kaka, and neither by a distance is he a Gerrard either. 25 million is the same as Man City paid for Carlos Tevez, more than the Mancs paid for Carrick, twice what City paid for Barry etc etc. I think it's about right, even in todays "crazy" market.

Fair enough, Mick.  In Sabre's defense, he has made the comparison to Diarra a couple of times recently (though perhaps not this one around), which is more revealing.  Can't recall exactly what Madrid paid Pompey for the fella in January but it was a fair wedge.  I think Sabre's correct in suggesting that we approach Madrid with the statement 'if you're going to pay 20-something million for Lassana Diarra we should be looking to have you pay 30-odd million for Alonso.'

At the end of the day, I don't think we'll get 30 million + but I do think we are doing the right thing by keeping the price high and making them work for it.

I don't have problems to consider 25M right for Alonso. The problem I have is when I knock the doors of Keanes and Glen Johnsons or Barrys last year and they ask what they ask for them.

The mentioned players are not the kind of players who make differences to win leagues. If you sell an important part of your midfield (Mascherano is as important I agree rbg in another thread) and then they ask you a fortune to fill your RB position, or they ask you 20M for an Irish international that is not that good, then we have a problem.

Much as I don't want Alonso to leave the 2 things that really worry me at the moment are 1) For £12 million if Xabi goes then Barry would have been a good replacement and leave money to buy another player.
2) We play our first pre-season game this week, every year Rafa says we need to conclude our transfer business early and every year we have issues that drag on and on.

The reason RM dont want to pay 35 million for Alonso is the simple fact that he wont sell many shirts. They have openly admitted to this fact, and it just goes to show you what a kunt of a club they actually are.
