LILLE VS LIVERPOOL - Cancelled

Liverpool Football Club - Games

Postby Yossi_Benaloon » Thu Mar 11, 2010 12:11 pm

This competition should be taken seriously as it is our opportunity to win silverware this season, so Rafa should put the strongest team possible out and look to win the Europa League. We need to make up for Monday's disappointments by putting in a good performance here, though that will not be easy as Lille have a great home record.

I think it's important we win something too, but I understand why people are a bit lethargic about this game, not just because of the Champions League success of other English teams this season but purely because of the way the team is playing. If they play with lethargy you can't blame supporters for feeling the same way.

I personally think we need a change of manager, I will support him and the team always but if winning this cup hides the bigger issues of a poor season, with so many bad performances then it does make me think twice.

I will be watching, not sure I'll be caring that much as this season has been one long disappointment, the cup should have a picture of mickey on it and let's face it we're playing games without playing good football, playing attractive football or getting results, so more games just depresses more and doesn't instill any confidence we'll finish fourth.

If we finish fifth or lower but land a tin pot then we'll have more tin pot football next season, more Monday nights and what fan in their right mind wants 2nd class European football and Monday nights in the league?!?!?!?

Not that I like mentioning manager issues in the match thread, JB is right regards the manager. Maybe Real Madrid's exit from Europe may resolve Rafa's future. I can see them ditching Pellegrini at the end of the season having publically courted Rafa. I guess the only worry is they may wait for us to push him out rather than pay to get him, but time will tell. The extent of his success is a flattering 2nd, a win on penalties in the CL and FA Cup, sometimes it was a rather fortunate run to European glory including a second half comeback against Olympiakos and Milan and a ghost goal against Chelsea. That's not to say Rafa doesn't deserve some credit, just a more realistic appraisal of his tenure and there have been some disasters as well as great moments. Thanks for the memories Rafa, but the job you came here to do isn't quite in your grasp. That some on here are hoping you win the Euro Disney league sums it up nicely, I wouldn't be shocked if we did win it on penalties having played rubbish and gone 0-3 down or something as bad.

These days if we win we're expected by some to celebrate like it's a cup final win or something, others expect us to settle for Euro Disney league football next season and even hope we win it, while we're supposed to reduce expectations to a lot lower than usual, although none seem to want to pin the blame on Rafa.

Any white bib theory team news? :blues:

I have to be honest I really don't care about this game, I'd love us to win but I just can't get excited about it.

Hope Pacheco gets a chance. Rafa has to start building a team for next season and this mickey cup is the best place to start.

WHY?? torres needs match time (any match time) to get him up to speed and back in goal scoring form

if we start with ngog up front i will fear for us and the result

for the love of god we MUST get some good results in the next few games or heading to the manc scum will fill me with dread

Sounds about right that team Ben.  Didn't expect many changes.  Agger fit again and Benayoun out means another forced change, but I had a feeling Torres might be on the bench for this.

double edged sword. he does need games to get him back to 100%, but considering he's played 90 mins against wigan, 89 mins agains blackburn in the game before, a rest midweek might be quite good, as you dont want to go from being out for a while to playing 90 minutes of every single game. He aint superman. Yes he did make a couple of subs before then, but seeing as he's played the last two games in full, I'd be okay with him on the bench tonight

Torres does start...

The team in full: Reina, Johnson, Agger, Carragher, Insua, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard, Babel, Torres. Subs: Cavalieri, Aquilani, Riera, Kyrgiakos, Ngog, El Zhar, Kelly.
