Benitez admits SWP swoop unlikely
2006-12-03 13:19
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez admits he would fail with any bid for Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips, because the Blues won't sell him to a title rival.

The England international looks set to quit Stamford Bridge in January, with West Ham United reportedly prepared to bid £10million for his services.

Benitez has long been an admirer of the tricky winger, but he concedes Chelsea are highly unlikely to allow him to move to Anfield:
"At the end of the day they would want more money from us because the player could score goals and create problems for them later.

"I think they will let him go to another club where there is no problem for them."
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

We've already got a better winger there in Pennant. The lad looks terrified at the minute.

Pretty much like Kewell the season before last.

Pennat is not a better winger than wright phillips with confidence or not.

It's even debatable whether pennant is actually an out and out winger.

Pennant and Wright-Phillips are very different players.

Pennant's had a bad start but you don't lose quality overnight and he's got that in abundance. Weather he can play with this level of excpectation on him is another thing altogether. Up until the other day Bellamy had failed miserabley and after everyone banging on about Gonzalez for the last year you'd have throught the lad would have been able to trap a ball.

As for Wright-Phillips, the lads a good player nothing more. He's shown at Chelsea exactly the level he's at. He gives the ball away to much and has not settled there at all.

Wright-Phillips game is about work rate, pace and dribbling.

Pennant has more in his locker than that but unfortunately at the minute its staying in the locker simply because he's terrified when he's out on the pitch.

spot on, agree with everything written. I dont see why people go so crazy for Wright Phillips he is a very limited player, good but limited. Pennants all round game and ability is better but he needs to show it and tonights peformance was a good start, he's finally starting to have the confidence to have a run at the left back and get to the byline as well as swing a cross in from distance. His assist for Fowler tonight was class, he needs to start producing more of that more often.

If he thinks one goal is going to make any difference, he's mistaken.

He was bought to prevent Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool buying him.

Chelsea stockpiling players to weaken the opposition.

He's either too dumb to realise this, or he's happy collecting money for nothing (and the chicks for free).

maybe he put in such a good performance because
1. he played for once
2. he has heard all the storys about the buyout and wants to remind rafa what he saw in him

i beleive he would jump at the chance to join us and feel he would be a massive player at lfc

i met him once at a club in warrington called 53 degrees
he spoke 2 my mate on my phone who is a city fan for 5mins and seemed a nice lad
and hes fkin tiiiiiiiiny
