Who are the big clubs - What it says

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

As Liverpool supporters we dont need telling we follow a big club,a fact which can not be disputed by anyone. But what is the criteria for the title Big Club. Some might say look at attendances, others may say finances, but I suggest we look at history;18 League titles,4 European Cups,3 U.E.A.F.A. Cups 6 F.A. Cups and 7 League Cups.this coupled with our ledgendry support both nationaly and internationaly, makes Liverpool F.C. a massive club.If we compare other so called Big Clubs do they stand with us on merit.
Manchester United;undoubtdly a Big Club, much as it hurts to say but they are probably the biggest club in the Word, even though they are still behind us in pursuit of major honours.
Arsenal;another club that in my opinion passes the acid test although they still have to prove themselves in European competion.
Everton;have had their successes, duriing the80s they even won a European trophy,To go with their 9 titles and five F.A. Cup wins.,therefore I acknowledge their claims to be a Big Club.
This brings me to 2 other clubs who are often reffered to as massive clubs,Chelsea and Newcastle United. Chelsea are definately not a big club if we take past succecces as a yardstick. It is 50 years since they won the only championship in their history, and its not too long ago they were in the 2nd division, with a half empty stadium that was better suited to the 4th division. If we wear to take notice of the scribes of Fleet St we would all be believing  Chelsea to be the biggest club in World football, while in reality they have a long way to go to match the other clubs previously mentioned.
Newcastle United are in the same vain as Chelsea, how often have we heard them refered to as a m assive club. There is nothing massive about them,to be fair they have won more than Chelsea but thats no great achievment.
I think the thing that impresses most commentators is the Geordies support, whats so special about it.This is another club that recently played in the 2nd division in an empty ground. There is only one club in Newcastle, so they have no  City rivals, Imagine the size of the stadium we would need if there was only one club in this City.
To sum up,it may be a while since our years of glory but these other so called Big Clubs still have a long way to go emulate the achievement of LIVERPOOL F.C. THE GREATEST CLUB IN THE HISTORY OF BRITISH FOOTBALL.

tough one.

Traditionally it has to be Manure, Arsenal and LFC.

Chelsea are a big club at the moment but not historically.

but you could say Nottingham forest are bigger than Arsenal cos they have 2 European Cups to zip, even Aston villa has one.
would you class them bigger than Arsenal or even Chelsea at the moment? no

Chelsea a big club??...I even hesitate to think they are a big team, they are soooo lucky but to be one of the big ones you have to behave so, they wont be a big club ever.

If you read the papers you'd be fooled into believing there are only 3 "BIG" clubs such is the media's fascination with Man Ure , Chelski and Arsenal !

All three got beat this week in the CL yet SKY seemed to be more interested in Mourinho's half time "whatever happened" than Liverpool's victory ???  Had Man u beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 at home no doubt SKY would have been creaming themselves but because it's little old Liverpool ???

Ohhh well never mind , looks like it's Liverpool's job to fly the flag for British clubs in Europe :;):

1) Fans base
2) History
3) Financial cloud

i can understand all this frustration but i do think a little paranoia is developing here... remember how we were on sky for a quite astounding run over xmas and new year? no other team has received that much coverage.

since the past few years, the media has been very bias firstly towards ManU, and now it's Chelsea. Arsenal didn't even get as much coverage as the mancs, more so since their "impossible" achievement last season. The referees' attitute indicate the same trend.

don't forget Liverpool F.C's fan base overseas remains very very strong. In most countries that I have previledge to lived in, there are as many, if not more LFC fans than scums...hence the TV coverage of their games.

Back in the early 90's there was a threatened breakaway of the "BIG 5" into taking the majority of TV money and their own Super League and all the hoo-har that folowed meant the formation of the Premier League (Rick Parry was the original CEO of the Premier League).

The big 5 were Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

I don't really care what other people think and I believe the fan base of LFC is very strong, stable and loyal. Most of us are true fans of football where as many Chelski fans are bandwagon fans. I'm sure their fan base will deteriate once they run out of money. TO me LFC is defo one of the greatest team on this planet.

Hate to say it, but in these big commercialism days, we are behing Chelsea in the pecking order of being categorised as a "big club" becuase they are pulling in more money in turnover due to their relative success compared to us. Nowadays, "big clubs" are those with a lot of financial muscle, achievement comes second and history and fan base only comes later in the definition.
