IMO, If Rafa had a Chelski bank balance I do not think he would keep any of the strikers at the club. Even Robbie, He has kept Robbie because he has put in some good performances since he has returned and he knows the player would die for the club. He also knows Robbie would be happy to play 15 minute camo performances for the club and is still a deadly finisher.

However, if money was not a issue i do not believe any of them would be kept on...

mcmanaman was shafted by the club before he ran his contract out.
he came through the youth system and was our best player for a good few seasons in the mid 90`s, all his close mates were at the club and he wouldnt have dreamt of leaving but one day he came in to hear roy evans say to him out of the blue `we want to sell you to barcelona`. macca was heartbroken, he realised liverpool didnt want him so he went to listen to what barca had to say and then had to suffer the indignity of barca saying we dont want you we want rivaldo instead. macca thought he was the first name on the teamsheet and it was a shock to hear instead your the first name out of the door.
at that moment macca realised it was a cold business and thought to himself well if thats the way the club want to play it.
the club bent over backwards for michael owen but he strung the club and the fans along for 18 months with that `my agents on holiday` or `there`s no rush to sign` rubbish.
it wasnt a last minute decision, owen had leaving on his mind for over 2 years.
only after the embarressing flight home from barcelona did mcmanaman have leaving on his mind.

goop point raised there about the diffrence between the Mcmanaman and Owen transfers. Im always suprised by the way that Macca is spoken about by a lot of our supporters, like he was some sort of Judas when in fact the way he left the club was much more the clubs fault than his, im sure he wouldnt have wanted to leave for nothing, but he took up a great offer with Real Madrid, which i doubt many players would have resisted.

As for Owen he left us when we needed him most, and strung the club and fans along for almost two years stalling on a new deal. But regardless theres no point going on about it constantly, he's gone and he's missing out on our new success so theres no need to have a dig.

Been reading through this thread with great interest. I think Garymac is pretty much spot on when he said that players like Owen and Mcmanaman should be remembered for the good times they gave us in a red shirt.
Both left in not so good circumstances but at the times i understood the reasoning behind there decisions.
I was gutted when Owen left but we had just had a really poor season and he wasnt to know that Rafa would come in and do so well. People may say he should of gave Rafa the chance but at the end of the day we are Liverpool supporters and care only for the club, Michael Owen is a professional footballer that cares about whats best for himself not our club, that may bother some people, but it doesnt bother me...thats life. Its very rare that we find players that are totally comitted to one club, we may have Carra robbie and stevie (after a few dodgy summers) but Owen was never a fans favourite anyway so i always had the feeling that he would move abroad.
Well as we all know it backfired for him and spectaculaly, he sat on Madrids bench (even though he was there best striker) and we won the biggest prize of all.
Since then he had the chance to come back and should of stood his ground when Newcastle came in with a bid. He didnt because as we all know his prime concerns are with the national team, and tbh i am glad he never came back. I wanted him to come in January because we were so poor in that department, but it looks like rafa was right to not match newcastle's offer, he has been injured most of the season and all he has spoke about in interviews is being fit for England, not a thought towards Newcastle after they paid so much money.
I can understand fans that are bitter towards him he did string us along when he left, but as garymac said i would prefer to think of the 2 goals in the F.A. cup final than the manner of him leaving.
It will be Michael that is looking on enviously when we are in the champions league next season,sitting there reflecting on what might of been, well its all his own fault.
We have moved on to bigger and better things, he has gone backwards.
He is still a class striker and although he may of lost a yard of pace hos movement and finishing is still world class. If he could stay fit he would guarantee 20 league goals, but he that is not likely.
I dont think he is in Rafa's thoughts and i think that we should be looking elsewhere this summer.

if owen came back all the i hate owen brigade would change there tune when the goals started going in..   fickle feckwits that can't recognise the greatness of the lad and the talent that he still possess if he is good enough for gerrard he's good enough for me.

imho he believe he made a mistake after bad advise from agents, and lets not forget at the time gerrard was thinking of leaving and carra was not in favour with a section of fans because he wasn't world class ( and still isn't a world class right back, because he is a world class cb)

you're right...people would soon forget it once he started getting the goals, but lets not allow that to distract from our position to his one.  He's going to be sitting down with Gerrard and Carra asking them about the Champions league, winning the FA Cup and challenging for the title.  What will they ask him?

That's exactly it.

After the WC, Owen will be stuck at Newcastle who at the very most will be challenging for a Uefa cup spot next season.  He will be 2 years away from the next international tournament with his 'beloved' England.

I don't believe it was ever his plan to be at Newcastle beyond this WC, but the fact he has been out injured for the most part of this season means he will probably (or should) feel guilty about leaving the club after the money they shelled out for him.  I'm surprised Spurs haven't been linked with him actually.  They'd probably be quite an attractive side for him at the moment plus Jol seems to have a hard-on for every half-decent English player these days.  I predict Spurs will make an approach before the Summer's out...

How long has he been with Newcastle and still he is not fit.
I got fed up with us wrapping Owen in cotton wall week in week out.
We want a striker not a sick note.
He did real well for us as we all know I’m not knocking him for that at all.
I just would not have him back he turned his back on us before and will do the same to any club again.
His superstar stature made him to big a star at Liverpool so he went aboard and for what to come back to eeerrrmmm Newcastle (good move Owen) not. What are you going to win there then?.
I would like to know what Owen had done this year to warrant a 1st place spot in the England squad not that he should not be there but what has he done to prove he is better then some of the other strikers in the premiership?.

Ha ha Top Thread. This is the first thing I thought about when I heard the news about Henry.

As much as I'd hoped we'd faced Henry for the last time, you got to give him credit for staying loyal.

And they offered 50m for Henry. You'd think Owen would have known how much he was rated when they only offered 8 + a reserve player.

You ruined your career Michael. You could have been an Anfield legend like Dalglish and Rushie. Instead you chased the dollars and turned your back on the greatest club in football.

And you're not half as good a player as Henry is. And he is now also twice the man you are as well

To be honest i cant exactly blame Owen for leaving us when he did, as the team was struggling and not looking like a good prospect for winning much, where as Real Madrid were looked at like a "Sure Thing". But it was in the manner of which he left, which is what got me and most fans annoyed. Had he simply just said he was not going to sign a new contract and wanted to leave, i think that would have been more respected than the constant "I'm going to sign next week" or a"s soon as my agent comes back of holiday" that he kept talking about all the time.
I wont wish him bad for all that he did for us when he played for us, but i wont be wishing him any good for stringing us along in the way he did.

This has been discussed too much already. I think that some of you need to put it into perspective, the guy was 24/25 at the time when all of that was happening. How well do you think that you would deal with the situation at that age, with all the media prying into your lives, the pressure from all the clubs involved and more importantly the agents from SFX.....they needed him to move. You saw how that affected Stevie at the same age and it was ONLY his family ties that held him at the club....Owen didn't have that.

He messed us around and I always hated that, but I would imagine he was being screwed with by so many people around that time, I would put money on a lot of people on this forum making the same decision as he made. Also, I think if he hadn't have done what he did, we would have lost Stevie as well. It was the best example of the grass isn't always greener for him. For every negative, there is a positive.

Never a truer word has been said about Rafa. I don't think Owen was ever in his plans...I think he pulled the rug from underneath Owen and made it v. clear who was in charge and Owen was left in no mans land. I think that he would consider him at a v. low price and fit him into his squad, but I don't think he figures at all at the moment. The same with Robbie. We got him for a song under the premise that there are no guarantees and he needs to kill himself to win a place. He's stepping up at the moment and producing some goals at the same time. Back to the old school way of managing. Rafa = Shanks? Let my crucifixion begin
