Only 35 miles seperate the cities of Manchester and Liverpool and can be travelled in less than an hour by car but it is almost untraversable when set against the back drop of football rivalry. These 2 cities have always competed from the birth of the industrial revolution until the present day and probably always will do.
It doesn't matter whether you are talking Airports, buisness, music or sport there will always be an invisible "divide" and I believe that serves both cities well. Achievement gained by competition is all the sweeter when you see your rival grasping at thin air crestfallen and defeated as you celebrate your victory.
From a personal point of view I've watched as Manchester United have swept nearly all before them over the last decade or so but the achievements have to be set against the decline of Liverpool FC for various reasons. The onset of the Premiership, the debilitating aftermath of Hillsborough and the tipping of the financial scales have all led to the recent swift in football powers in the North West. There is little doubt that Man U benefitted most from Liverpool's heavy heart post 1989 but when you have a capcity twice the size of your competitors, a marketing team with no ethics and an intimidating and arrogant style you are almost condemned to victory !
However whilst Liverpool have enjoyed comparitively little success we haven't lost our identity and dignity during this famine choosing to celebrate our past hoping it will inspire the present and create a new glorious and successful future.
A wise man once said "Those who remember the past are destined to fulfil it again"
The origianl tale of 2 cities saw the destruction of one at the expense of another. In this modern day version it's reassuring to realise the despite Manchester's best efforts to destroy our great city in sporting terms ii is still some way off as they grasp to attain the achievements of England's most successful club side .........
Walk On with heavy hearts if you must but remember that however bad it gets thank God your not a MANC !!!!
