He read the game far better than Mascherano and had a better footballing brain. Despite his relative lack of pace he never seemed to look rushed which was priceless. His really good positioning also compensated for Gerrard's lack of discipline when they played together in centre mid. Mascherano and Gerrard never really worked for this reason.

). On the contrary, when he was fit enough to get a run of games he was a quality player on the flank who popped up with some vital goals as well (none better than his volleyed strike at Goodison).
