in an interview with the official tv channel, Torres kept saying the phrase "to stay in the final" obviously there is some kind of translation issue here and he meant to go to the final.  What do you say Sabre, is this a natural oddity between english and spanish phrases or does Torres need to get a new english teacher. Also when he was asked if Liverpool deserved to win the first leg he said something about the final and I don't think he understood the question.

Not having a go at Torres, I took Spanish classes for 7 years and can't understand when anyone speaks it, but was Torres someone who would always give kinda spacey vague answers in Spain or is he just so eager to want to be able to speak to his fans in their native tongue that he is giving interviews in English before he is ready?

also I always hear English reporters ask "is it going to take your best performance tomorrow to see you through to the final?" I think this is the dumbest question ever.  What are people supposed to say to that? Who cares? How is anyone supposed to know before hand? you don't know how well the other team is going to play. I think it would be great if someone answered I think that if it was our 4th best game and they played their 9th best game that we would win.

In both portuguese and spanish you would say to `arrive´ at the final, not to `stay´.  Maybe its just poor english Joe.

Regardless, his english is better than Kenny´s ever was.

Torres targets payback double

FERNANDO TORRES has vowed to score twice against Chelsea — to pay back John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho for the kicking they have given him.

The Liverpool hotshot wants to get his revenge on the Blues defenders by putting the boot in himself — to their dream of making the Champions League final in Moscow.

Torres has been a revelation in his debut season since signing from Atletico Madrid for a club-record £21.5million.

But tomorrow he faces his toughest task of all — helping Liverpool dump Chelsea from the Champions League semi-finals for a third time.

And the 24 year old would love nothing better than to blast Rafa Benitez’ men to the final after last week’s 1-1 first-leg Anfield draw.

Torres admitted: “English football is physical and reasonably honest in contrast to La Liga, where it’s more vicious with studs-first challenges and elbowing off the ball.

“But all defenders in England are tough. It must be written in their contracts!

“Now I’ve taken that on board I’ve got to go out and earn my money. I’m not scared of a scrap.

“I’ve wanted to play against guys like Terry and Carvalho for a long time, and they do me an honour by giving me a tough time. Now I’m going to try to respond by getting a couple of goals against Chelsea.

“Everybody dreams of playing in the Champions League and in just a few months I have gone from watching it on television to having plenty of memories.

“My goal at the San Siro when we beat Inter Milan 1-0, the 4-0 win over Marseille and my goal in the 4-2 win over Arsenal — now it is the turn of Chelsea.”

El Nino has taken his game to new heights at Anfield and puts it all down to boss Benitez’s obsession for detail.

He revealed: “He calculates everything, including runs and flights of the ball. If he tells you to stand five feet from the penalty spot, it’s not in your best interests to be six feet from it!

“He’ll show you that the extra distance makes the difference between a goal and a missed chance — and it’s worked for me.

“The proof for me is I had never scored a club hat-trick in my life before joining Liverpool — but I’ve since got three.

“Rafa explained it all to me before I signed. He even gave me a work schedule in advance.

“He has great powers of seduction and makes crazy demands on us. At the end of training, when we are all tired, he can still make us repeat routines 20 or 30 times.

“Nobody is sure of his first-team place. Rafa is merciless and anyone who wants to play has to earn the right in training.

“It is different to Spain, where only an earthquake can change the pecking order at a club.

“You soon learn the Liverpool way of doing things. If you train like an amateur you end up dropped for the next game.”

Yet there is one thing about life at Anfield which does not quite measure up to his days in Madrid - the dressing room.

He said: “I found it old and very small but the senior players say it’s like a listed building.”

Peter Crouch has also vowed to blast Liverpool all the way to Moscow - if he gets the chance.

The Reds striker took his tally to 11 in just 25 starts in the 2-2 draw at Birmingham on Saturday.

Crouch, likely to be a sub, said: “Whenever I play, I always feel confident I’ll get a goal.”

I do love Crouchy, but his put in that means little to nothing to me. When I hear Fernando Torres say that, I really do believe he's going to do just about anything to get those goals. No one from Chelsea's defense will be able to contain him, maybe the ball, but not him. There's no way they're going to take away a shot at goal from Fernando Torres.

He may have netted thirty goals in his first season in English football and got the Kop bouncing again, but Fernando Torres has pleaded with Liverpool supporters not to compare him with past Anfield greats.
The Spanish striker will attempt to add to his stunning goal tally for the season tonight when Liverpool will be aiming to find the back of the net for the first time at Chelsea since 2004 and set up a final date with Manchester United in Moscow.

Despite netting more league goals in a season than any Liverpool player since Robbie Fowler and despite an on-field relationship with skipper Steven Gerrard which has had fans purring over a new Dalglish/Rush-like partnership, Torres insists it's far too early to bracket him alongside some of the greatest players in the club's history.

Speaking in an exclusive interview to be aired on LFC TV at 6.30pm this evening, Torres said: "I'm very proud (of the comparisons) but now is not the moment. Kenny, Robbie and Stevie [Gerrard] have a lot of trophies, a lot of titles and they have played hundreds of games for the club. They have been legends for lots of years.

"This is only my first season at Liverpool and I want to play better for many more seasons yet. So far I've had one good season but Kenny and Robbie have had six, seven, eight or ten good seasons at Liverpool. It's different.

"When I have finished my career then maybe that will be the moment to talk about these things but not now. It's too early. It's important to me that the fans think highly of me and if they're saying these things then I would say 'thank you, but not yet'."

Torres has been left in no doubt as to the impression he's made on the red half of Merseyside since his record-breaking move from Madrid in the summer.

Thousands of supporters proudly show off the Spaniard's name and number on the back of their replica kits while the Kop's song in his honour has had Anfield bouncing like never before.

"The best thing is for me to see my name on the shirts of our fans," he added. "It's strange in my first season because normally it would be Stevie or Carra but it's fantastic to see a lot of Torres as well.

"It's very important for me to make the fans happy. We play football to give them enjoyment. I think they love me and I love them. It's great when kids and their grandads come up to me in the street and say 'you're the best'.

"I was with Kenny Dalglish the other day and you could see in the faces of the people how much of a hero he is, 20 years after he finished his career. I want everyone to remember me in 20 years time."

And asked if he would like to remain a Liverpool player for the rest of his career, he replied: "I hope so. I feel very confident here. If we can win trophies, then much better. This is my team, my city and Anfield is my pitch. I feel very good."

And here lies the big difference in attitude between Torres and Ronaldo at United.

Torres acknowledges that he still has a lot left to achieve in the game and remains humble despite the fact he has every chance of becoming a club legend here.  Quite simply if he consistently does what he has done this season for a few more years even without improving as a player, then he will probably go down as the best centre forward we have had.  He's that good.

Contrast that with Ronaldo who has recently been compared with George Best.  Have you ever once heard Ronaldo come out and say something along the lines of 'I still have a long way to go to be compared with such a legend'?  No.  Why?  Because the arrogant tw@t probably believes he is the best player ever to grace the game of football.

The Spaniard has scored 30 goals in all competitions and it means that £400,000 has been paid to Atletico due to an option in the striker’s contract.

It has also been claimed Atletico have earned another £200,000 from The Reds, as he has appeared more than 25 times in The Premier League.

Hustlers  :D
When does this deal end ? when his contract is renewed?

I think I posted that somewhere a couple of weeks back, but I'm not sure.

THere's a limit in that bonus, and with the last payment Atletico has reached the goal limit bonus, so even if he keeps scoring Liverpool won't have to pay that variable again.

I think there are extra bonus variables should we win the CL, though.

I'm just interested to know how many goals Christiano Ronaldo has scored in open play this season. I ask because I'm curious to know if Torres has scored more. Thank you :)
