Fernando Torres has put pen to paper on a new and improved contract at Anfield.
The 25-year old striker agreed the terms of the deal back in May and has now completed the formalities of signing the new contract.

Torres was already tied to Anfield for the next four seasons after signing a six-year deal in 2007.

This new contract includes an option for a further year's extension to 2014.

To protect ourselves when other clubs come to poach them. If Xabi had not had signed a new deal year before last do you really think we would have got the fee we did for him? It would have been less.

Next to Stevie, Fernando is probably our most prized player. He should always have at least 3 years left on his contract at any time.

Let's see how I put this without sounding arrogant. I think it's a normal situation in this kind of club and this kind of player. For instance Messi, has seen his contract improved 5 times in Barcelona, the last time recently after the Ibrahimovic deal.

So don't feel    I mean, feel like you want, but don't worry too much, I mean worry if you want, but in a way, it's a good sign we're able to keep this kind of player. Note that he came from Atletico losing money and his contract in Atletico wasn't a contract comparable to a world class player.

This is good news, we have all the guarantees to have Torres until 2014.

See it as rewarding a loyal player's loyalty with improved terms, like anyone doing a good job for their company should get (but often don't) It also strengthens our hand in any transfer bids for the player, although it does seem rather repetitious and pointless when new contracts are offered every two years and it doesn't prevent against sale despite some of the media and fans talking about it as if it does.

If he refused a new contract would people (Heimdall) be happy/happier?!?!? Or would it merely change from complaining about the finances side to complaining about the player not signing

No but if you give someone a new improved contract every damned year then why not just have players on rolling one year contracts or write into the contract that they get a pay rise based on performances, wouldn't that make more sense rather than have to go through all the bloody expense of renewing a contract all the frigging time. And no it is not the same as getting a payrise in the real world, gettign a payrise does not entail you having to go through induction training etc etc each time does it or you physicaly getting a new contract. A new contract for a player is fairly expensive so it seems a bit weird to give a player a 5-year contract then renew it ever year, or it it just me, maybe it makes brilliant sense to waste money, that is what the economy is based on after all 

I think sooner or later football clubs are going to have to scrap the concept of "owning" players. I'm actually staggered that it hasn't been challenged by the EU courts yet. It is a weird concept to own another person, kind of like slavery in a lot of aspects although very highly paid slaves. Why can't they just work for the club and earn a salary like the rest of the world do? Obviously you would have to have rules that bind you to the club for at least one season but with the way players can break contracts anyway what is the bloody point in them?

In that one paragraph you contradict yourself... kinda like slavery but then the slave can break the contract? If anyone can break the contract then surely it's not slavery? and then you go on about why can't the players work for a club like anyone does... if you work for a club like all of us does in a company that's more like slavery... becaue you're working your off while the company bosses reaps the rewards... these football players are not slaves... they are actually more powerful than the clubs...
