Tales from istanbul - Stories from those who were lucky enough

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby stapo1000 » Wed Jun 08, 2005 2:24 am

I wasn't there myself but a guy who i work with has a brother in law who was at it and was even more depressed than most at half time (if that's possible.) He was in the centre of istanbul in a square with 3 mates when he got a slap of a turkish guy, he was stunned for a minute and in the blink of an eye the turk made of with his wallet containing his(and his mates') tickets and every penny he had. He was given the number of a rep from the club who was in istanbul and he phoned this guy and he said he'd sort him out with replacement tickets. The folloing day he was to phone the rep (which he did) but the rep had been in a car accident and couldn't help him. So the 4 put all their money together and paid a turkish tout 3000euro for 4 tickets. They got to the game only to find themselves among the milan supporters who proceeded to hit them with flags for the entire first half :p
At half time a Turkish steward explained to them that they had to leave the ground which they refused to do after paying so much for the tickets. Instead, they were moved to the liverpool end of the ground to a place where there were 4 seats free. In the end, he said it was well worth it to see Stevie G lifet the cup! :)
Steve Gerrard Gerrard,
He'll pass the ball 40 yards,
He's quick and he's f*cking hard,
Steve Gerrard Gerrard.

Anyway.....arrived at the Vatan Azur Hotel approximately 1.45 a.m. maybe 2.00 a.m. I don't know...checked in,dumped the bags and went for a walk......in the distance the faint sound of singing...follow....the sounds...it was like a beckoning wail...perhaps I'm being summoned to prayers...no it was a small cafe full of the red-men,doing what comes naturally...singing and drinking.Stayed for an hour and a half donig what comes naturally...drinking and a singing, then made my excuses ,wished everyone well, told everyone I loved them and would see them in Taksim sq. for brekkie! The short walk back to the Hotel was beautifully serenaded by the small Kop Choir in this part of Istanbul.
After 4 hours kip, dreaming of what lay ahead ,I lifted my head from the pillow and prepared for the big day.

My best mate who I go all the games with made the trip as I was unable to travel for various reasons (Although a lot in here were chuffed I wasn't after my away record last season !! :D ).

We have been more or less everywhere, been to Cardiff 4 times, went to Dortmund in 2001 and have a few stories to tell of times spent watching LFC away from Liverpool.

Anyway Mark was telling me the rendition of YNWA at half time was both poignant, powerful and almost defiant in the face of adversity but then again that song has always represented those attributes. I never doubted for one minute that LFC Supporters would do something oike that at half time to show their support niot for the 45 minutes of football they had just seen but a lifetime of folowing this glorious and great club. What took place in the subsequent 60 minutes and penalty shoot out was just rewards for years of "Through the Wind and the Rain" support :)

It was a glorious morning;the view from the window was a building site and an Otopark(car-park).Straight down to Brekkie.Play it safe, don't want any food poisoning to ruin a full belly of ale to come.Had bread and honey...Bees have no border control and produce the same natural honey the world over....Back to the room and pack, shower and dress for the main event.Check-out,dump bags in room 1 to be loaded on coach at 6.00p.m.for the journey to the ground.Leave Hotel and get taxi to Taksim sq.

Recap;
4 of us fly out on SYC3323..myself and Rod stay at Vatan Azur Hotel..brother and his mate are in the Grand Besiktas Hotel,or so we thought.Apparently they went straight to the bar without checking in,went to check-in 2 hours later and the hotel was full. They ended being moved to another hotel.
Not being a mobile phone person,I left that one little task in the hands of Rod.Well he did tell me that his £200 phone was the bees-knees and could do everything..text or phone anyone anywhere in the world from anywhere in the world. It takes video, pictures, cooks dinner, makes the bed, gets the ale in...Well soft ollies informs me he had £8 on the account when we left Liverpool but we are down to our last text message after wasting plenty trying to contact my brother..lost in Istanbul somewhere.
Use last message to inform other mates we are in taxi heading for Taksim Sq get the ale in.Message returns "In the Park behind the music stand".Arrive at 11.30a.m. and the party is well under way.Meet up with old friends and get stuck into a crate of ale.The afternoon was spent singing, drinking ,laughing..having an absolute ball.I said the whole build up to this game felt like it was the 1st time and for a lot of Reds I suppose it was. There was no way we were going to lose this..we couldn't,the effort the 40,000 strong army had put in just to get here was commendable.
All afternoon we were recieving messages from other mates stuck in Manchester waiting for flights. One group was delayed travelling from Brussels. We wished them well and said we would have a can for them.Contacted my other brother back home in work to wish him a happy birthday and we were drinking to his health. He said not to worry he had closed the business for the day and they had all gone to the alehouse.
From time to time we ventured up-front for a good old sing song.Have a picture of Leon's banner..tried to track you down Leon couldn't find you.Bunch of guys dressed in all white suits on a table next to us,from Huyton I think.Batman and Robin made an appearance for the cameras. The whole day was fantastic.
5.00p.m. and we had to make tracks, said our farewells and wished everyone luck. Now let's try and get a taxi back to the hotel and catch the coach to the ground.

It was as though everyone had decided now was the time to head for the Stadium.loads of taxi's but non empty. It didn't help that it was rush-hour,but fortunately we grabbed a cab after somebody jumped out.4 of us climbed in with banners and poles and a crate of ale for good measure..no beer outside the Stadium!
I like to think myself a seasoned traveller, well I am,but I had commited the cardinal sin when in a foreign land and a huge Metropolis too boot:I had left the Hotel without a card with the name and address on.To make matters worse my brother had done the same thing and they couldn't remember the full name of the hotel they were in.The cab driver gave it a shot anyway but was heading in the wrong direction.Stop! was the cry and the ride ended there. We then ran back to Taksim Sq and made our way to the correct side of the road this time to at least catch a cab going our way.We walked desperately trying to hail anything.Cab after cab shot by with the our fellow supporters hanging out of windows singing their heads off.A young Turkish lad noticed our dilema and offered to get us a cab for a fee.Sure enough he took us to a side street and bingo we were in."Get across the water over the bridge and take us to the hotels ,please"..6.00p.m. was approaching fast. The journey to Taksim Sq took 15 minutes,so far we had travelled 1/2 a mile from the Sq and it had cost us 30 minutes.Well off we went across the bridge noticing land-marks we had seen on our outward trip then the cab turns left ,he is heading for the Besiktas Hotel. We came to a sudden stop,he could go no further and we all had to leave the cab.The cab driver informed us that the hotels we were seeking were at the top of the hill, but no cabs can go up the hill because it is a tram-way.Odd I don't remember any trams. We decided to make haste up the hill, time was not on our side.Up dale down dale we searched not recognising anywhere. We reached the summit and headed for another taxi rank;we were surrounded by cabbies and their off-spring all wanting to help, but showing little idea of were our hotels where .Eventually one cab-driver offered to take us for a fixed fee.We were desperate,if he got us to the hotels he would get the fee plus the job of taking us to the stadium.
Well he drove this way and that way, then this way and that way.Stopped and asked this person and that person, then drove a little more."That's it" shouts my brother. The driver takes his wad of cash and declines the chance to search for our Hotel and leaves. The coach has goneso my brother and Robbie will now share a taxi with rod and myself to try and find our hotel. The Besiktas manager hails a cab and gives him an address we assumed was the correct address for my hotel ,so off we went again.About 100 yards up the road we see the same taxi rank from before with the same cabbie laughing with his comrades,we've been had good style.
This taxi trip had been going for about 10-15 minutes and it didn't feel right. The cabbie was stopping and asking directions too often. We pile out and go into what looked a posh hotel. The manager was very helpful, knew whaere we wanted and called another cab.Up stepped our saviour, but sadly I've forgotten his name."I know where you want,my brother-in-law works there".In no time at all we had recovered our bags and we were on our way to the Stadium. We had missed the coach by an hour,it had taken 2 hours to get back from Taksim Sq."Don't worry I will get you to the game" was the cabbies call and boy did we fly.We weaved this way and that way, toot toot at everyone holding us up.At last we could see other reds on their way, hanging out of windows singing their heads off.The relief was immense, open another can and get relaxed again was the general consensus...then we hit the QUEUE!!...

After the party in Taksim Sq and then the ridiculous situation of looking for our hotel ,we were at last nearing the Stadium.......Nooooo!The cabbie said it best we exit the Taxi at the top of the hill and walk the rest of the way.So close to the top of the road we said our goodbyes and paid the bill.Laden with beer, bags and banners we set off on what we thought was a short walk.
This was not a walk but a mountain hike around the "Valleys of Ataturk".How far we had to trek backwards and forwards ,up and down, this way and that way ,I will never know.It felt like an age, following the red shirts in front with thousands of red shirts behind.Cars were left abandoned at the side of the road on the final steep climb to the summit.Their clutches obviously burnt out by the smell. Finally we had reached our destination, now to find our coaches to dump the bags.Luckily we spotted the Lonsdale group quickly and now we were free to enjoy what was left of the pre-match atmosphere.A few beers shared with thirsty hikers later and we enteed the Stadium.
After such an eventful day, with many twists and turns and highs and lows and highs again, could the Cup Final live upto the billing.......
