Styles has been dropped from officiating any of next weekend's Premier League fixtures after his botched handling of Chelski's clash at Liverpool in which he awarded the visitors a controversial penalty. The Hampshire official has now admitted, "In mistakenly awarding a penalty, I accept that I may have affected the result of the match and for that I apologise."
Styles is understood to have contacted Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez on Monday to admit his mistake, but it is the claim that he felt the need to apologise to Mourinho last season that is most curious. In the post-match aftermath on Sunday night, Pool skipper Steven Gerrard specifically suggested that Styles had "cracked" because of the relentless "pressure" he was subject to by Chelski players.
'Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho had a public bust-up with Styles last year over decisions in which Chelsea were denied penalties,' 'But the row is understood to have been patched up when the ref called Mourinho to apologise.'
Styles officiated three Chelski matches last season - April's draw with Bolton, the FA Cup thrashing of Norwich, and, most significantly, the league defeat at Anfield in January.
In a separate twist, Styles, a millionaire in his own right following his dealings outside of football, is a board member of a building company that was paid 'a five-figure sum for work' by Chelski chairman Roman Abramovich last summer.
The Professional Game Match Officials have insisted that there was nothing untoward in the business link to Abramovich.
"Rob made the PGMO aware his company was undertaking work for E A Chiverton, a company sub-contracted to work on one of Mr Abramovich's properties," a spokesman said.
"The PGMO investigated this at the time and was entirely satisfied that no conflict of interest existed. We do not think this is an issue. We have discussed this with Rob Styles and are entirely happy. It would be entirely wrong to impune his integrity as a refere![]()

Whether or not there is nothing untoward found when these sort of things come up they still shouldn't be allowed. They may just be straight forward above board business dealings but at the end of the day they will undermine the actions on the pitch and they undermine the reputation of all referees in my eyes.
When we got to the 2006 FA Cup final the ref was changed just because he lived close proximity to the city of Liverpool. No direct connection with the club, no business dealings reported with any person connected to Liverpool Football Club. But hang on a minute he lives close to that city he can't officiate that game he'll be accused of being biased, however receive a check from a club chairman and your fine to ref his teams games.![]()
Totally fuckin wrong.

Not just the penalty which was ludicrous, but also the yellow cards fiasco (he was giving them out for fun), plus letting them set up a wall no more than four yards away for a Riise free kick. He also gave a goal kick when Cech tipped one of our shots over the bar. All in all just completely incompetent.
He should have been forced to come out after the game and explain himself, just like he did last season after he gave Gerrard a disputable penalty away against Sheffield United.

stmichael if you was part of the FA what would you do to stop this if you read up on my idea for a league for the Ref's.
You got any ideas ?

Just get rid of the idiot. I don't see how suspending him from reffing for one weekend will make any difference.
He was the same ref to whom UTD have NEVER LOST A MATCH whilst he is reffing. Just remembered that from the com on their Reading game; where he also sent the Kitson lad off immediately after coming on, for an innocous foul at worst. Sprinted over before Evra landed, holding the card up like he had a brass band behind him.
Has he been bought.? It is entirely plausible, of course, but he just seems far too dippy and village postmanesque to have the foresight and awareness to be so crafty.
I see Keith Hackett will be pulling Styles from the next Premier League program and I very much doubt that we will be seeing the soft dope ref at Prem level again or at least for a very long time.
LegBarnes wrote:What would you all say to having a league for the refs..
IE. like they all play same amount of league games and they get marked out of 10 on every game now if they wint he league they get put forward to ref for world cups , champ league games , euros and so forth.
Now if they go bottom 3 they get the drop and have to ref in the championship and the refs that scor well and are the best in championship get to move up to the prem i think this would keep the refs on there toes and make them better.
Just an idea but little old me knows not much
