SOS Backs LFCNY Boycott
Fri 08 May 2009

The Spirit of Shankly would like to lend their full support to fellow Reds of the New York Liverpool Supporters Club (LFCNY.org) who have publicly condemned the British-born, U.S. Radio Host, Steve Cohen, who appears on Fox Football Phone In and on World Soccer Daily on Sirius.

Cohen has repeatedly slandered Liverpool fans, and the 96 in particular, on air by claiming repeatedly that Liverpool fans killed their own by turning up ticketless at Hillsborough, a lie categorically refuted by The Taylor Report. When confronted with his lies Cohen responded by linking Hillsborough with Heysel, with murdering Liverpool fans as the common theme.

" Consider the facts. Liverpool are at the center of almost every serious human violation of conduct. Heysel, Hillsborough, Alan Smith, Singing about Munich 58, throwing **** on United fans at Anfield, Michael Shields...are you seriously telling me that you are not guilty of any of this. 2 events - 4 years - 2 different cities - 2 different countries - 2 different stadium. 135 dead - Only common link....well have a guess. " (Steve Cohen)

The LFCNY Reds are calling for his removal from the airwaves, and have demanded a full public retraction of these disgusting and offensive slurs. Until that time, they call on all supporters to boycott advertisers and promoters of his show, as well as his broadcasters Sirius and the Fox Soccer Channel.

The LFCNY Reds told Spirit of Shankly: "The LFCNY, and all the North American Supporters' Branches, recommend that you email Steve Cohen's advertisers, letting them know that you will not be using any of their services as long as they financially support this person".

Full details are available at http://www.firsttouchonline.com/09_boycottcohen.html

The Spirit of Shankly would like to add to this call for a boycott and further invite Mr Cohen to attend a public meeting of our members where we would invite him to explain and substantiate his allegations. We would then be delighted to point out the error of his ways and allow him to publicly retract and apologise. In support of this issue New England Revolution Manager, Steve Nicol, who was a player for Liverpool at Hillsborough that day, has notified Mr. Cohen that he will have no more to do with any of his shows.

Latest from SOS.

SOS and LFC Accounts
Fri 05 Jun 2009

The Spirit of Shankly have studied the information that has been released in the last day relating to the accounts of Liverpool Football Club and its associated companies. The picture is alarming and underlines what we have said from the creation of the Union, namely that Tom Hicks and George Gillett are not fit or proper custodians of our Club.

The accounts show a number of unacceptable issues and we feel it is fair to say that unless action is taken now by the owners and their funders then the Club is sleepwalking into disaster.

The irony is that Liverpool Football Club itself has increased its income and also its profit – what is not surprising though is that the holding company for the football club has massively increased its debt to the point where its own auditors have said that

These conditions, along with other matters explained in note 1 to the financial statements, indicate the existence of a material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt on the Group's and parent company's ability to continue as a going concern. The financial statements do not include the adjustments that would result if the Group and parent company were unable to continue as a going concern.

This is utterly unacceptable and coincides with the Union launching a campaign against our owners and particularly Royal Bank of Scotland, to see Hicks and Gillett out and a more sensible business model put in its place that relies upon the profitability of Liverpool Football Club being used to service appropriate liabilities and with all profits being ploughed back into the Club and not siphoned off to service debt that was used to purchase the Club in the first place.

Hicks and Gillett’s business model is no longer viable and they should go – the Union’s campaign being launched this afternoon has been planned for some time to coincide with the re-financing decision being taken by RBS. We urge all members and supporters to join with us and use the window of opportunity we have to demand change, and change now!

Tom, George - Watch this space.

No money, No Credibility, No Honesty, No Integrity, No Dignity, No Custodians - Hicks and Gillett out NOW!

Liverpool supporters group chants about Munich air disaster at end-of-season party

sos.pngMuch consternation in Manchester with the YouTube release of a video shot at the Spirit of Shankly's end-of-season party, showing people chanting "Munich!" during a singer's live performance.

Spirit of Shankly (formerly Sons of Shankly) is the self-appointed official supporters' union of Liverpool FC. Self-righteous, much?

As I wrote in my column for BigSoccer.com, it's laughable and ironic that this band of staunch Liverpool supporters claims to uphold the good name of Bill Shankly, as the very thought of singing merrily about the Munich air disaster would have appalled Shankly.

Watch the video below...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNsl6z64fjE

SoS has quickly issued an apology for the Munich chants, but the damage is done.

Of course, both sets of supporters are as bad as each other, but this time the high ground belongs to United's fans.

Thanks to Scott @ Republik of Mancunia for the tip. As Scott points out, imagine how much bigger the uproar would be if United fans were filmed singing about Hillsborough - yet singing about Munich is just as bad.

Some good points there especially about the local phone number for the ticket line. Must have spent like £50 in the last quater just hearing that women say "welcome to Liverpool football club yadi yadi ya".
