So why switzerland? - Just curious

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Seems like we've been holding summer training camps in Switzerland the past few seasons.  Anyone know the story behind this?  Has this been a long-standing thing or one of Rafa's changes?  Is it about fitness training at altitude or are there more important factors?

I'm curious!  ???  :D

To be honest I have not got a clue. But we've been going there for the last few years. I think it must be the training at altitude because I've seen the camp and it's located by the mountains. Of course there is less altitude and therefore less oxygen in the air. So when the players train at normal level again they are used to training at levels where there is less oxygen and so it is easier for the players because they are not having to use up as much oxygen and therefore do not get as tired. Marathon runners train this way.

BTW I'm studying altitude training for me PE GCSE, that's where the above content came from :D

I dont think there is much behind it at all except it gives all the new lads a good chance to bond and the squad to get to know each other, obviously its a good place to g in terms of getting fit and training but its something all clubs do and always have.

Much prefer this than a publicity stunt to Asia or America though, this is just about the football  :D

Over here in Canada alot of professional teams head for the high altitude areas exactly for the reasons adamnbarrett said, also any team playing against the Denver Broncos (american football team) always seem to lose the pace and steam in the second half when playing in Denver, whereas Denver looks ready to go another hour once the game is done (due to training there at all time). It takes alot of time to have it pay off to the extent of having a Denver Bronco sort of advantage, but alot of people notice a difference to stamina after just a couple days.

Simple.

Because Switzerland reminds Rafa of Spain.

What, with all the mountains and yodelers and all that.

If he wants to go somewhere that reminds him of Spain, why doesn't he go to, well, Spain  :D

Then again, he could always just go to that restaurant called 'La Tasca' in Liverpool cuty centre  :D

Athletes generally train at altitude for at least a few weeks to get the benefit. Would have thought the difference a week in Switzerland would make to a player's fitness would be pretty negligable.

Switzerland is f*cking pretty though. Pretty easy going too, so it's possibly just a nice place to go for a bit of hard graft.

It was Houllier that started the Swiss trips, we also used to play some German (from near the Swiss boarder) teams under Houllier but Rafa trains them harder than GH did  :)

I know it's in German but it's from 2002
