Preying for a better 2004/05 season - What changes are needed

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby scott23inlondon » Fri Mar 26, 2004 12:24 pm

At this moment I have to admit that GH may have taken Liverpool as far as he can. I respect the guy, and yes referees have contributed heavily to some of this years bad results, but the fact remains that Liverpool don't have the quality of squad that we should expect.

Cisse is going to be a great buy for us, he's a strong, skilful, prolific goal scorer who will link well with Owen.

It's just a shame that GH has brought his best buys too late.

Biscan, Cheyrou, Diao have to go, they are no where near good enough to play for LFC, but given the damage done to our status as a top premiership team, who would look to come to replace them?

My two cents:

1. Houllier heavily criticised Gorden Strachen before Christmas for criticising referees. He made an infamour comment about British managers always whining and blaming refs. Its a bit rich now that he decides to start blaming refs himself.

2. What do you mean that Houllier has bought his best buys too late?

Houllier made some great signings in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Since then Diuoff, Cheyrou and Diao have flopped, Steve Finnan has been riddled with injury and poor form and Harry Kewell is in my opinion only playing at 65% of what he capable of, and its still far too early to judge Pongolle and Le Tallec at this stage.

As for Cisse, he hasn't actually signed for Liverpool yet nor has he stepped on a blade of grass in a Liverpool shirt, so I don't know how people can say he is a good signign by Houllier.

Do people not remember Gary Brittles, Stan Collymore, Chris Armstrong, Emile Heskey and Francis Jeffers? Signing a big name striker for a lot of money is no guarantee of success and the same goes to Cisse. I hope he will be a good player for us, but he has a hell of a lot to prove.

New manager + creative midfielder to partner Stevei Gerrard + a central defender with plenty of pace.
Given those things we will finish in top 3 :D

I agree entirely with with your comments JBG.
Under GH we began improving as a team almost immediately. But in real terms we have gone backwards over the past two years.
He cannot obviously take the team forward to the next higher stage and his range of excuses are becoming painful to listen too.
I can only say that as a person I liked the guy when he came here but his actions and his comments are now starting to make me doubt his fitness to be in the job.
As a manager he needs to accept that he has reached the limits of his ability.
Please think seriously about resigning GH before events take over and force you out in a way that would not do any favours for anyone involved with the club.
I have never called for the head of any previous manager, and I hope GH will see that the most honourable way forward is to relinquish his position before the whole sory mess gets worse.

We have certainly taken a a few backward steps in the last 18 months.

I agree his time has come and gone at Anfield. The goal was to win a title and he has had a good run with no success at winning the league. We can always look back at 2001 with great fondness and he can take some pride in the silverware they won under his reign.

I agree about Cisse, but I'm not so sure Owen is the right partner. I love Owen, but I think it might be time for him to move on. For his sake and for the sake of the club it might be time to part ways. I just don't think Owen gets the service, week in/week out which he needs to be at the top of his game. Plus the injury bug seems to bite him at least every other season. It will be a sad day when he does go, but unless we improve the team around him I just don't see him leading the league in goals or even in the top 3.

Good post!

I like to see big changes next season.

Get rid of GH before the start of the next season, that's most important for us!

Change the formation, we need attacking formation.

Get rid of cr#p players like Biscan, Traore, Diouf, Cheyrou, not sure about Smicer (he is quite good squad player, but do we need him for next seaon).

Start to rebuild of Academy again, remember we lost so many young talents about 2 weeks ago.

Need to buy wide right midfielder but Malbranque may be too expensive for us to buy. Maybe we should buy Joe Cole.

No more French players, had enough of them, it's didn't work out for us and they should know that.

Try to persude Sammy Lee NOT go to England Squad to coach their players but we need him at Liverpool more than England.

Buy a pacey centre back.

Still not sure about Cisse, i know some members of this forum want him but I do get sick of tired to hear that he might be flop, look at Diouf, what a rip off to bought him!

The board must go now cos we need a real businessman like Roman, so we need that, so we can get more money to buy quality players like British players.

Get Martin O'Neill now before too late!

Try to give youth players a chance to play in the first team to see how they go for the future.

Houllier already had his time. We don't need to buy any new players, get a new manager, pay Mr. Wenger $10 million and that will ensure we have a very good season.  :;):

Instead of spending 14 million on Cisse, the money could be well spent on Smith or Viduka, Forsell and Malbranque.

We would immediately get 3 players of premiership pedigree.

14 million on players with potential is a huge risk given houllier's "reputation".

Rather than selling half the squad which is tempting but impossible as who in their right mind would want them anyway, lets just give GH a pat on the back, thank him for his efforts and bring in a manager who can get the very best out of each player we have. Who knows, maybe Cheyrou is the next Zidane,Biscan will look worth the 5 million( ok, some things are impossible!! ) Murphy will kick a ball to another liverpool player again and the Senegal duo will bring some African flair to Anfield. Who is this manager? MARTIN O'NEILE. Celtic play as a team with no player giving any less than 100% week in week out. He brings out the very best in each and every player, a belief in their abilities as a team and even the average players begin to look quility.
Failing that Mr. Ranieri looks like he'll be down the dole office next season?

I'm not so confident in Cisse.

Like was said earlier, £14 Million is a heck of a lot of money that could be better spent.

I'd agree about Cisse, 14m is a lot to spend and a big gamble.
I know people say he's a good player and has the potential to be a bit special but Houllier doesn't seem to have the ability to develop the potential in players he buys. Most seem to be worse after playing for GH !!

I don't think it matters who we buy in the summer if Houllier is in charge we can look forward to another season much like this one.
