Portsmouth v liverpool - 7/2/09  17:30

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby tonyeh » Sun Feb 08, 2009 12:29 am

That turned into one of the games of the seaon, no doubt. I'd say the atmosphere in the Pompey ground was crazy at the end.

BUT...if anyone here thinks that Rafa was doing anything but takng a gigantic elephant sized cöck of a chance putting out that ridiculous lineup, then they need their head examined.

He can thank Peter Crouch, Fabio Aurelio, Dirk Kuyt and Fernando Torres for helping him not look like a complete tw@t.

There's a forthnight to go before the next match and Benitez wanted to "rest" the players that could win us the game and chance putting out a team of denfenders? That's not a "tactic", it's not a "strategy", it's simply hoping for the best.

As it turned out, Liverpool got the right result, but only by the skin of their teeth.

On the plus side, I don't think there is a Liverpool supporter who wasn't singing Dirk Kuyt's praises this evening (or Torres for that matter, but he gets that every week). He was instrumental in the win and he, Torres and Alonso should have been on the pitch from the beginning. Benitez could have "rested" them after Liverpool had got a couple of goals.

The gamble paid off, but only just.

Either way, delighted with the win. Let's hope tomorrow is the right result is the right one too.  :D

Maybe Rafa should thank Berminstein for starting the match thread too.  :)

Made up with the win today, hopefully Rafa won't try that again. Hopefully West Hamcan do us a favour tomorrow.

Just reading through the thread and while we were losing and looked like drawing and some of the things said by some posters are an absolute disgrace
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

I still cant work out whether this was genius selection/use of squad players by Rafa
or whether he took a mad gamble and got away with it.

I can honestly see both arguments; but what I do know is I dont want to see that line up again.

Torres really helped Rafa there.  I still think Rafa waited too long to put him in, but some are gonna say he put him in at the right time.

Of course he put him on at the right time. It doesn't matter as he was put on to score a goal and that's what happened. People seriously do not give the manager credit for making subs. Sure he's made a few mad ones in the past week that never worked out, but for making subs that have an impact, there is no better manager in the league over the past 5 years for doing so, not even Ferguson. Of course when Benitez does it, it's luck and we won by the skin of our bollox.

You may of answered your own question there Effes.

I'd say it was a gamble most definately, it may of been forced with the injuries and suspensions. In saying that Rafa doesnt need alot of encouragment when it comes to tinkering.

Maybe I did Bam - obviously it is not a "tried and tested" formation, so I wouldn't want to see it again.

Well, not with those players..... but...

What if we were to play that formation, but with the regulars?

    Carra    Skrtel     Agger

Arbeloa    Masch   Alonso     Aurelio

          Gerrard        Benayoun

                Torres

Now, again I would be a bit nervous about it, but you never know.

It was this time last year that Rafa stumbled across the 4-2-3-1.
But I doubt he'd stick with today's formation, but you never know with Rafa.

It worked out, but things may have been different if Torres was in earlier.  He may have put us up 2-1.  Yes it worked out in the end, but if not people would be saying Torres should have been in earlier.

If there was any doubt that Torres should be mentioned in the same breath as Fowler and Rush, he is well on his way to a second successful season. Best striker in the world!

p.s You really have to bow down before Rafa for this one :D
