Ok, now hammans gone...

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

This is mainly to get rid of the world cup woes, lets talk liverpool... now did is gonna be leaving us, and now we only really have momo as a defensive midfielder...

I wouldn't like Carrick, I don;t think hes up to it at our level, and Scott Parker is still very injury prone. what we need is someone with bundles of energy, and someone who i never would have mentioned a few weeks ago.

Owen Hargreaves.
He is, as i saw in another thread, an engine. He is also very similar to did in the fact he is just very efficient and he plays like all our best defensive midfielders have, he doesnt lose the ball when in possession.

What does anyone else think? Is it a completely outrageous idea? Would Rafa go anywhere near him when he does favour spaniards... and is he good enough?

Thoughts please:

Hes similar to momo in that hes got an amazing engine and he is first and formost a ball winner, not a holding midfielder i dont think.  reckon he might go for that player from zaragoza, zapater or something. He should be realitively cheap according to reports 4m.

Momo is NOT a defensive midfielder.  There is a difference between a tackling midfielder and a defensive holding midfielder, you do not necessarily have to be both.  When has Momo ever played a game simply sitting in front of the defence.  Never.  He chases opponents all over the midfield, closing down space and pressing the ball.  Although he is primarily a tackler, his game is more offensive than defensive I think, he is a completely different player to Hamann at the moment, although that does not mean that in time Benitez won't try to hone him into a more defensive sitting midfield player.

Alonso is our defensive midfielder.  A far better tackler than some give him credit for, he sits in front of the defence giving good protection, while also acting as a deep-lying playmaker with his impressive range of passing.

If Hamann goes though, I do think we will be a bit light in the centre mid area.  There would still be room for bringing in a very young or an oldish experienced player as cover there.  Of course the ideal situation for me would be to keep Didi another year.

Hargreaves has two good games for England and now people think we should sign him, ridiculous. He is no way near Hammans quality and never will be.

momo , xabi and SG in the middle we have enought first team cover for hamman going imo.

it will be hard for anyone to play the holding role as well as didi , as he was our calming influence and could change the game, good luck to him at bolton where he won't run far, but he will help nolan and is now one of the younger squad members

He is talking about Mascherano. He plays in Spain and is one of the most highly rated defenders around. Surley you will have heard of him Dawson???

And as for Hargreaves i doubt Bayern will let him leave now tha Ballack has left.

I heard M'Boro are sniffin around him but come one lets be honest would you rather play for the best team in Germany or a semi good team in England.

In fact he will probabaly be the captain now at Bayern now that Ballack has gone to Chelsea.

Replacing Hamman will be a far more complicated challenge than just finding a tough-tackling midfielder who can pass as well.

Someone said Mascherano, but I doubt he would even fit in the squad. A player like him would command consistent first-team football and I do not think we would be able to comfortably integrate him in that aspect.

Though, if a holding midfielder is the type of player you are looking for, what better place to find one than in the down and dirty dogfight of traditional British football?

Ehh? Ehh? Come on.. :D

I'm sure some of you who watch the Championship or the First and Second divisions have seen a few youngsters who might have caught your eye..
