Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

People say it’s not AVB’s fault that things didn’t work out at Chelsea and it was the players to blame for not accepting change and taking on his ideas. But for me he showed his inexperience in how quickly he tried to change things and lack of man management skills in the way he treated players. He immediately made Anelka and Alex train separately from the first team squad because they didn’t feature in his plans. He was responsible for managing the change in the best possible way and he didn’t even get close. Not the man for me.

He was Mourinho's assistant manager at porto, then chelsea, than Inter in which he was learning under, and helping one of the best managers in the world.  He left Inter to take over at a small Portuguese league club, Academica de something, 9 games into the season.  They had not won a single game yet and were bottom of the table.  He won his first game in charge, and ended up pulling them into 11th place, as well as reaching the semis in their league cup where they were knocked out by either Benfica or Porto, I can't remember which.  He was hired by Porto the next season where he won league and Europa league.

He was complimented for his ability to get the clubs he was managing to play beautiful football, and he was known as a tactician.  His players listened to him, and because they listened they succeeded.  He went to chelsea and they didn't want to listen to somebody who was their age giving them advice on how to play football even tho he never played before.  They were too f*cking egotistical to try and making any type of change, and when the older big boys where benched sometimes they caused problems in the dressing room.  He wouldn't have that problem at Liverpool.  He's also an extremely intelligent person.  If you listen to the way he talks, and the way he handles the media, you can tell he's a really sharp guy.  Not just a footballing brain, but an in general smart person, which we could really use.

AVB is a really special manager.  His inexperience did hurt him at chelsea... his inexperience on how to manage at a club where the players turned on you and the owner never supported you.  If he came to Liverpool, I think we'd have a good chance of making it back into the top 4 with a few new signings, but more importantly we'd have a manager who could be here for 30 years and achieve really good things at this club.  I know everybody brings this up, but imagine if manure sacked fergie after he finished 14th(?) in his first season, and 8th(?) after his second.  They stuck with him and he ended up being one of the greatest managers of all time.

AVB can be that manager if he's given the proper support and belief from the players and the fans.

Villas-Boas refuses to be rushed over Liverpool job

Ian Herbert  Monday 21 May 2012

Andre Villas-Boas wants a "project" to re-enter football for, but will require a detailed knowledge of the terms and demands attached to the new Liverpool manager's job before committing to the club.

Villas-Boas is emerging as a prime contender for the position vacated by the dismissal of Kenny Dalglish last week, with a meeting this week to involve him, his agent Carlos Goncalves and   Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG). But despite his interest in Liverpool and theirs in him – revealed by The Independent last Thursday - Villas-Boas will not be rushed.

After his traumatic nine-month experience at Chelsea, he will seek assurances about the new structure FSG are putting in place and the resources available for what the Americans view as an entire restructuring after 18 months of ownership at Anfield.

On his arrival yesterday at the Portuguese Cup Final between Academica and Sporting, the 34-year-old said: "I'm still choosing the right project and that decision will take the necessary time." Of his former side's winning the Champions League, he added: "The biggest award is to win the Champions League. Congratulations to Di Matteo and the players."

He and  Roberto Martinez would appear to be front-runners at this stage. Liverpool have now made contact with the Wigan Athletic manager, who was scheduled to depart on holiday today. He may break that holiday to meet FSG.

Villas-Boas has been extremely interested in the Liverpool manager's position, ever since initial soundings were taken with Goncalves before Dalglish's dismissal. It was made clear to him from the start that there would be other possible contenders, as the Americans embarked on their process of identifying a number of candidates. FSG first want to replace the successors to director of football Damien Comolli - rather than create the impression they are undermining the new manager by appointing them afterwards.

a sound argument, but we have already done that...just replace avb with sounesss, portugal league for scotland league and porto for rangers. it did not turned out well for LFC.

same for the argument for martinez, giants killer for this season with wigan, found and survive relegation for 3 yrs. just replace martinez for hodgson and wigan for fulham. story turns out the same for LFC.

I don't like this attitude of writing off managers before they have even become our manager. AVB is a good, young manager in the game and was unfortunate at Chelsea. AVB wanted Chelsea to change and adapt to his ideals and Chelsea being the more expensive, less classy version of Stoke City were having none of it. Just because a manager has one bad season at a particular club doesn't make him a poor manager - likewise the same applies for managers who have good spells like Graeme Souness for instance. Any manager who FSG appoints should be given full support and patience, if he isn't the right man for the job, we'll soon know about it and so will FSG, but the worst thing we can do is not support the manager from the off. I was quite embarrassed by our clubs supporters over the whole Hodgson thing. They never even gave him a chance and then they harp on about the 'Liverpool Way'.

if it is Rafa, i will quit football.
Capello possible? but no a long term solution
Hindink seem like a possible choice but close link to Abrav means he is not long term solution...
can they temp Pep? unlikely but anything can happen...
Steve Clark is another possibility..but he is inexperienced.

Steve Clark quit for loyalty

Whats wrong with Rafa

Steve Clark's resignation offer was rejected and is still at the club

the quote was initially from twitter, but lots of sources running the story:

Frank de Boer 'honoured' by Liverpool interest but wants to stay at Ajax to continue building project

De Boer is one of a number of candidates being considered for the Liverpool hotseat following the sacking of Dalglish but has said he is happy in Holland.

The 42 year-old has led Ajax to two consecutive Eredivisie titles since joining in 2010.

"I am honored by the request, but am only just started with Ajax," he told De Telegraaf.

"In Amsterdam we're on a new path along with the club and Wim Jonk and Dennis Bergkamp, my colleagues in the technical heart.

"Thats why I stay loyal to Ajax in the coming years."

Liverpool are understood to have made a request to speak to Ajax in the last 48 hours. Swansea's Brendan Rodgers has already turned down a request to speak to the club.

De Boer replaced Martin Jol at Ajax in December 2010, initially on an interim basis before being given the position on a full-term basis.

He had previously spent time as Holland's assistant manager at the 2010 World Cup and won five Eredivisie titles and one Champions League trophy during a distinguished playing career.

At this point, I think it will be Martinez, Rafa or AVB.

Ballague on twitter said Rafa was not approached, and will not be approached this time. I think FSG are keeping him as a last resort if we fail to get any of our first targets.

I would take AVB over Martinez any day
