To be fair, considering what he's had to work with -- losing some of his key players and having very little to spend -- he's done a good job of keeping Wigan in the league. They've played excellent football at times and regularly beat some of the top sides at crunch moments to help maintain their top flight status, which is about as high as the ambitions get for a club of that size. Compare his performance with how other managers in a similar position have faired and it's not hard to understand why he's considered a decent prospect for the future. But it's a big old jump to go from that to managing a club that aspires to win titles. A midtablish club like Villa would be a good place for him to prove himself some more but right now we need someone who has a lot more experience.

this isnt the time to gamble on unknown quantities, managing liverpool is a world away from managing a wigan or norwich, get someone back who has handled the pressure for 6 years.
benitez has won the spanish title twice, the uefa cup, the champions league, the f.a cup, the world club championship and the italian cup.
rafael benitez was a miracle worker, by rights we didnt have the money to compete with the chelsea`s, uniteds, barcelona`s and real madrids but rafa had us trading blows with those clubs toe to toe, every f**ker in europe dreaded drawing liverpool in the CL draw, mourinho had the riches of solomon backing him but twice rafa sent him packing in CL semi finals.
rafa didnt want billions to compete with the other big sides, he didnt even need parity, if they had more money that wasnt a problem, but to expect him to compete with hicks and gillette sending us backwards was a bridge too far for even him.
under rafa we beat barcelona, real madrid, inter milan, ac milan, juventus, man united, chelsea (when they were like man city)......infact it`s easier to list who we didnt beat. get him back.

mate, FSG listened to us and got Kenny back, look what happened, will they listen to us again? no, they will go for someone younger and their choice

if they want to gamble it`s up to them, the wrong manager now though could really set us back years.
plus benitez is a bit diffent to kenny, it was only 5 years ago he had us in our second CL final.

Martinez, like Lambert, is too much of a gamble.

These are managers of lower league sides... they need to manage midtable/upper half sides at least to gauge how good they are.

Appointing flavour of the month manager would be a massive error.

Pedigree should be the #1 requirement when appointing a manager... what is their record as winners, their win percentage, transfer success, style of play, motivational skills, tactics. We need a manager with a winning mentality (where we went wrong with Hodgson).. a ruthless winning mentality is #1.

You misread my point Thommo, what I meant was that Klopp was a virtual unknown when he took over at Dortmund, a MASSIVE club especially in Germany and he has taken them to two league titles in a row and just trounced Champions League finalists Bayern Munich 5-2 in the cup final.

It takes more than experience is all Im saying, some men are just destined for greatness, but it often takes a large slice of luck and an opportunity for them to get there.

Fair point.Wenger is the best recent exmaple I can think of in the Premier League. It does tend to happen more often in the other European leagues than over here. I think the risk is perceived to be greater over here because the top spots are so competitive. F'uck it up and it's a long way back. In Germany, France and other places, by contrast, the top spots tend to change around a lot more than they have done here so hiring an inexperienced manager is seen as less of a risk.

at least we could count on returning to the cl in a year or two.
it remains to be seen though if he will even be interviewed for it and they probably have a replacement lined up but wont disclose it because of the uproar it will cause.

Rafa with limited funds, a board full of n@bheads and 10% backing, finished second to man utd.

Rafa with some funds and a board backing 100% could be a world beater.

if he'll do it bring him in. 3 year contract. top 4 finish demanded for next season.

We have been down the road of sacking a successful manager and bringing in someone who was accused of "not getting us" because, despite being recognised as a good international coach, he was too small minded.
We are now in that position again where one of our most successful managers (not this season) has been fu'cked off to be replaced by ?
We dont have the time or patience for building a great team, the owners have seen to that. We need a proven, guaranteed, experienced WINNER because the fans demand it. The owners have painted themselves into a corner and the only way out it to bring in a massive name who will give them, and us what we want.

if he was one of the options i'd probably back him at this moment. the decision is absolutely critical and we have to get someone who knows what they are doing. the fact that he also knows the club and the fans is also a bonus. definitely a better bet than a 'prospect' for now.
