And more Catholics still support N Ireland over the ROI in Ulster, its not such a black and white issue. Not every catholic is a staunch nationalist, just as every protestant isnt drapped in the union flag singing "God save the Queen" every ten minutes.

It was in response to the English fella who wasn't in the know.

Disagree 100% with your comment about more catholics in NI supporting NI over ROI.. not a prayer. It may have changed slightly over 20 years (since initiation of the peace process in 1994, improved cross community work, and also greater accessibility for catholics to attend Windsor park with excellent work by the likes of David Jefferies)... but the vast vast majority of catholics in NI support the ROI. For many it isn't political.. its merely the reason i outlined before.

Again it comes down to this notion people have that catholic=nationalist. Its not the case.

TBH I dont know anything about David Jeffery's cross community work, he's the manager of Linfield (owners of Windsor Park, where N Ireland play their home games) and not involved with the national side.

er......scouse not english if you dont mind!!
you seem pretty clue`d up about ireland mate so i guess your previous name kerry red was a reference to where you are from.
i know there`s a kerry in ireland because of thin lizzy`s whiskey in the jar (cork and kerry mountains)

Where did you get this "notion"... if you read my comment you would know that i didnt imply catholic=nationalist.. infact i stated that for many in NI who support ROI it isnt political. I mentioned the reasons.

To state that "more catholics support NI" is utter BS.. it shows complete ignorance/delusion.

I aint long out of school... and travelled throughout the province to various others. You would be more likely to see a Man U jersey in Toxteth than a NI jersey in a catholic school. Like i said.. this is the result of the backward system that is school segregation.

Are you aware that its alot easier for catholic in a nationalist area to wear a Celtic or ROI top than an N Ireland jersey without reprisal? As Im sure you're aware there is a sizable militant minority on both sides that dirrectly and indirectly effect the actions of the peaceful majority.  Just because you havnt seen it DC doesnt mean its incorrect.

Interesting as it is people is it really relevant or correct to be having this discussion here?
No offence but weve got a new manager and Im sure the majority of supporters wont give a fu'ck whether hes nationalist, british, catholic, protestant, straight, gay or a dirty, stinking manc as long as he does the business and pledges his loyalty to LFC

my own family originated from ireland donkeys ago and came here during the famine, i think they were from galway. i asked an irish fella years ago in work where was galway and what was it like and he wasnt very complimentary!  :D
but i think he was from a county nearby so i think there was a bit of that liverpool / manchester (or probably a better example would be lancashire / yorkshire) type rivallry thing going on.

Yep.. Ulster Rugby team encompasses 6 from NI and 3 from ROI... Tommy Bowe is from Co.Monaghan (one of the three counties in Ulster that aint in NI) and he started off his career with Ulster for 5 years.

Galway is in connaught (the most economically disadvantaged of the four provinces)

And as for gutless Benny and the edit to his post... from "NI less backward??" (thus questioning it).. to now "NI less backward!!". You're out of your depth here Benny boy. Go play with your lego this is grown up stuff.

My family come from Belfast - I was there during the 70's and lost an uncle to a terrorist bomb so don't even start to lecture me about Northern Ireland child.

Currently my grandma lives just of Old Park Road , one Auntie and Uncle lives in Newcastle and the other in Bangor. And we are all catholic and my cousins support N.Ireland football team.

What are you, Catholic or protestant Burgerjunio?

During the late 80's a mate of mine was offered to buy a house somewhere in N.Ireland, Belfast I think for 5 pounds.  :Oo:

no manc`s!! saying that george kay who was our manager when we won the title after the war and took us to the cup final (famously dropping bob paisley after he scored in the semi`s) in 1950 was a manc and a great figure at the club so yes, manc`s too.
it was kay who brought the likes of billy liddell, albert stubbins (he of sgt peppers fame) and bob paisley to the club and it was kay that made matt busby captain of liverpool.
as a player himself kay was also the captain of west ham in that famous `white horse final` of 1923, the first one played at wembley.

I am an atheist. I have family members that are both catholic and protestant, and I am decended from both English and Irish lineage. I do live in a predominantly protestant area though, so I have to sing the Fields of Anfield Road really quietly or get alot of intense looks from some of locals  :D
